Realism vs. Liberalism - Global Politics Theories Compared

Realism and Liberalism are the two dominant theories that seek to explain global politics and international relations today. Realism argues that states are locked in a constant struggle for power to ensure security. Liberalism, on the other hand, looks at the interdependence of the global system, and promotes cooperation over competition.

On paper, Liberalism definitely sounds the most logical, but unfortunately - people can't be trusted. Just because one nation may go into global issues with good intentions it doesn't necessarily mean they may not have hidden intentions. Liberalism would require all parties to be transparent, and I don't think that's possible with humans being so naturally competitive.

For me, the recent Ukraine conflict showed me the ascendency of realism in politics over liberalism. Liberalism and cooperation may work well in peace time, but when push comes to shove and shit hits the fan, it is realism that truly guides the actions of states. At the end, the primary duty of any state (democratic or autocratic) is towards its own people and national interest. No state wants to risk its own existance over a conflict in some other country. This is why USA and EU are only supplying weapons and not troops to Ukraine. Even more cynically, they are buying Russian oil and only giving most of the 'aid' to Ukraine as loans, with some collataral. And China, India and Asia as a whole is simply saying "not our problem, don't bother us with this". As a whole, the attitudes towards the conflict is almost completely geopolitical and not moral. In varying degrees, all countries are keeping a healthy distance as possible from the conflict, and their responses are always trying to minimize the actual cost to themselves.
@nwilt7114
@nwilt7114 2 года назад
Exactly, economics is based on the idea that people act in their own self interest. We study it and use it because that idea almost always holds true. That's why you can never trust another nation 100%, especially one in a system that has a whole other ideology that benefits from your openness (China and Russia) and can remain fairly the same. It seems that realism with liberal characteristics is the true modern world.
@TheFamousMockingbird
@TheFamousMockingbird Год назад
ukraine situation could be looked at through a constructivist lense though. The manifestation of belief in Putins world view lead to the reality of it.
@PochoNieves
@PochoNieves Год назад
On the contraire, the Ukraine conflict is LIBERALISM and failing. A REALIST would go to Russia and Ukraine and sat them down and tell them: make peace and stop killing each other. Liberals are signal virtue driven and doing enough to make themselves feel better and COLLABORATING in the hopes that Ukraine beats a giant Russia. A REALIST approach would be to put your interest first as nation and realize that this conflict will not lead to anything good for anybody. A REALIST would put his purse first and not waste resources in Ukraine who has not committed anything in return to USA for BILLIONS of dollars in equipment and resources. A REALIST would make concrete realistic decisions for the priority which is the American People and our country without INTERDEPENDENCE on Russian oil, etc.
@ututut77
@ututut77 2 года назад
i think some mix of the two is what describes reality right? much like people, i think states see the value in cooperation but but also look out for their own self interest and sometimes cooperation is what’s in their self interest.

This video helped me understand this concept further in preparation for my IR paper! I lean on the side of hope, for without any semblance of hope or trust, we can only maintain these chaotic relationships. Leads to acts of preemption out of fear. However, in that states are inherently driven to ensure their own security/survival, cooperation must be mutually beneficial or result in failure.

Psychologically, people can be in fight/flight or their higher mind. I believe, since states are like people, that states can also be in either psychological state. If the state is in fight/flight then realism best applies, but if a state is in their higher mind, as long as the state's sims are altruistic, liberalism would best apply.

They are both right. The fundamental nature of the world is realist, but states can cooperate and form a liberal order. But that order will only function if all constituent parties feel their security concerns are met and power is shared in a fair and just manner to promote the well being of all within the order. If the cost of operating within that order exceeds its benefit, states can be expected to defect. The current international liberal order is threatened because Russia, along with many other states, feel their needs have not been met by the liberal order imposed and defended by the US. Just as a note, I'll add that NGOs often operate on behalf of states clandestinely.

Great video! Both theories have their own merits but leaning to hard into one camp will lead states to make mistakes and miss opportunities. Realism is a better explanation for the global system but I think liberalism can be successful when applied to smaller more regional circumstances. I'm just an undergrad student so I may be completely wrong but that's my two cents.

I would say realism better explains the current state of the world, but as an ideal to move towards to, especially in the nuclear age, should be the liberal one, because on a long enough timeline I don't see how could humanity avoid self destruction by perusing perpetual hard power competition while getting more and more destructively powerful

I think in practise it doesn't have to be a choice between these options. You can embrace liberalism with like minded countries, while acting with realism in the more hostile regions of the world. And this appears to be exactly how the USA operates.

Thank you for a reasonable response. Why is it one way or the other. Global politics is far more complicated than this video professes. For example, curbing immigration temporarily due to a global pandemic might actually be a smart thing to do if you are concerned about spreading disease in a country., But now anyone or any country who states this is deemed xenophobic by the United Nations. The UN has a specific definition of Pluralism, which requires open borders and unrestricted migration. A We the people of the United Nations approach. At what point is a country allowed to protect itself or it's own self interests, according to UN, never. And anyone who objects to their authoritarian power is attacked as extremists and populists in the global political arena.

This video does not clearly distinguish the difference between descriptive and prescriptive (or normative) theories. The former purports to simply describe they way things are (and most likely must be) while the later suggests how things ought to be. Theories in international relations generally present themselves as descriptive. It is not about choosing what we think is better. As far as normativity is concerned, Liberalism is clearly better, but the questions concerns the actual nature of nations and of the internal system.

Idealism/liberalism is like to think most of your friends will definitely stand beside you when its against their own interests. Well very nice to think that… but in reality?!! You would be screwed and disappointed relying on that Idealism/liberalism is like to think your first day in school, no one would ever try to bully you because its very unfair and against moral. Well very nice to think that too… but in reality?! You would rather expect and plan ahead. Realism helps to be more practical, developed plan effectively, protected from manipulation and betrayal.

4:44 - "Exactly the realist approach..." I find this a false equivalence. IR theory is which political model (e.g. realism, liberalism) can best predict a nation state's behavior - not which approach produced the 'best' results. Seeing as how the US engaged in hard power with regards to Iraq and Afghanistan the realist was proven right.

Realism is the future.. While in studies & in practice its been already there for many years, but its going to be internationally & explicitly used way more. The world is in need for honesty, responsibility and practical solutions. Idealistic old views like liberalism is good for raising kids and in movies and reading novel books, but on the ground is far less legit specially the last few decades, ironically instead it caused more wars, biases, distrust and hatred than cooperation.

I think a collaboration of both is necessary. That being said, I do not think that monopolizing as a way to cooperate is of any benefit to the 99%ers. It becomes problematic being that liberals are the few holding the worlds finance. It seems as though cooperation is a fancy less harsh word used to manipulate the naive minds into believing they are an "owner" of something. When really they are simply submitting to being owned by something. A realist may not see the value of cooperation for corruption. They tend to believe that not all money is good money, and sometimes you must sacrifice finance for freedom.

I would support large parts of what you mean by "liberal" but I am seriously confused about your use of these two categories as they do not at all fit what I am aware of in philosophy, sociology and political science. I would now call that a gross category mistake. Although the USA is known for interpreting these things completely differently from continental Europe, maybe my impression as a European is because of that. I don't want to spoil your video for that. As a convinced European and liberal in the traditional, Enlightenment sense, I liked it very much, but your use of realist and liberal irritated me a bit. For example, in the context of this video, I would see myself largely as a liberal, but apart from that, I would consider it an insult to be referred to as such in the modern sense.
@KorczyksClass
@KorczyksClass 3 года назад
Thanks for the comment! Liberalism is definitely a term that has been used in a number of different ways. Liberalism as a political ideology seems to be what you're referring to here. In the video we discuss liberalism as an International Relations theory of state behaviour. They have common roots, but you might find some differences. This video is definitely just a general overview of the two theories. If you want to read into it in a bit more , you can check out the wikipedia article on IR theories: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_relations_theory - check out some of the source material there, or some of the sources I've referenced in the video.

What I also felt was problematic is the idea that only the US or any other solitary power shall keep maintaining its military and all whereas the rest of the countries do not. You know where it is heading to. It is basically saying the US will rule the world because they're the ones who brought in and propagated liberal democracy.

I believe the American founders were correct free markets and free trade are the best way amplify peace with other nations. If we all depend on each other for resources then there is less chances for a war like conflict to be necessary. America has been exercising "realistic" foreign policy ever since gaining super power status after WWII. We have been in perpetual cycle war since Vietnam. Tell me 1 war since that worked out well for America after WWII. America has been initiating coups in many countries even democratic regimes. Every nation building effort has bitten America in the ass. We have military bases in 130 countries. Our actions will invoke a response, thus we have terrorism. That's was bin Laden's main grievance, we had troops over in their region after the gulf war (still bombing them too). America picking fights all over the place only threatens our national security. You dont see Sweden or Australia into random wars or having entangling alliances with other countries. there's no reason for America's terrible foreign policy. I say this as a proud American. Don't get it twisted. That's my TED talk

Many neorealist theorists consider the Bush Doctrine to be international liberal theory in the flesh and on steroids. The take presented in this video is at best partial, at worst disingenuous.

France and Germany used to kill each other a few centuries back...now it's almost out of the question. Something like this is why EU is a success even though most people probably think of economical and diversity when talking about EU.

Proponents of a theory literally named it "Realism?" That is pretty funny. Imagine if physicists did this? Instead of the "inflationary cosmology" theory we'd have the "TRUE, CORRECT Cosmology (which you're WRONG if you disagree with!)"

Lol… your comment means you didn’t quite understand Realism. I suggest you read more about it. One of my favorite realist professor is John Mearsheimer

@@amirtawfik7495 You're right - I only have a surface level understanding of IR Realism. But Mearsheimer, et al presumably believe Realism it is a more realistic description of the world than Liberalism. Liberals presumably believe that IR Liberalism is a more realistic description of the world. I'd like to find out which is correct, not assume the correctness of my favorite theory.

@@erth-d3s Because the Bush Administration ,which was dominated by realists did not want to intervene. Since it was not authorized by the security council and none of them wanted to support an uprising which would have led to the break up of Iraq. His son was not as wise as his father. And Saddam mainly had Soviet Weapons.

(From Russia.) Fascinating conflict. ( If you pardon the pun). Just reading Keynes Biography (Carter) who was a economist -hehelped finance both WW1 and II. -But strongly believed in a utopian vision of Liberalism - 1919-1938 specifically. Now theres a paradox. But imagine if the world had listened to him!
