Realistic Eyes in Graphite Pencil
As a wildlife artist I find the eyes are such an important part of every picture as they really help to capture the individual animal's character and personality. In this video I will show the process that I go through in the creation of the eyes on my latest picture of an Asiatic Lion Cub. By just using a few pencils, a blending stump and a kneadable eraser a realistic look can be achieved. At the end there is a preview into next weeks video on how I go about creating the texture of the fur and the tools I use to do this.

Thank-you, it's always the most scary part of any picture . It always tends to look on a video as if pictures are just sketched out but there are alot of alterations made as the picture develops and it does take alot of time to get it right, but I have found that by using a blunt pencil lightly this makes things a lot simpler.

Wow how did you get the fur around the edge of the animal? Is that in another video?

So sorry I have only just seen your question. The fur around the Lion is indented with the dart and then the background tone is worked over the top using a makeup sponge, blending stump and 3B pencil. That is in the first video on backgrounds,. The fur around the eye is done by pulling the darker tone with 9H and 4H pencils, this still indents into the paper but will drag the darker tone producing very fine lines. You can't do the same with the dart as it just slides over the graphite. Hope this was helpful and so sorry for the late reply.
