i dont have option to merge layers my options is merge shapes or link layers and when i tried merge shapes it makes all the boxes one color?

IMPORTANT MESSAGE! I have ecountered this message: "Could not use the gradient tool because the content of the layer is not directly editable" - so instead of using the gradient tool, i just used the rectangle tool with built in color! - (Will save 30 seconds for everyone) anyways - you are great, I am so thankful for this tutorial!!!!
