I think you solved the uncanny valley in your last video by making the skin grey and not skin colored. Now it's slightly creepy again but not by much. Still excellent work.
It's not just the skin color that makes it look slightly uncanny. The eye movement and the little blinks are quite awkward on this one compared to the last video but yeah it's still an amazing work!
@@EngineeredArtsLtd One of the places where he moves his jaw looks physically impossible to me. If I saw someone do that in real life, I'd think he was some sort of reptilian in human skin.
@@EngineeredArtsLtd Right after he opens the eyes; it needs to blink (fast) and the teeth need to touch the underlips... those details can make it look more realistic... You cant say that you have no budgets for building walking Humanoid Robots... you should start; the problem is that since the invention of the first industrial robot; all robotic companies were manage the wrong way....
I feel like another thing that give humanoid robots that uncanny look is the fact that their mouths do not work. So when just actually moving their mouths and syncing to an audio, it's inevitably going to look off. I haven't heard much of artificially made tongues or vocal chords, it would be really interesting to see if it were possible how it's functions would work. Another thing would be the lack of shine in the eyes. It's incredibly difficult work, I've always appreciated the process of this type of thing. - With skin, if you actually compare to human skin, it is actually slightly transparent and from underneath our skin, everything can still be slightly seen projected through, like how blush works, veins, blood. Maybe using a slightly more transparent material would solve something there, and it a more softer look.
For artificial vocal chords look at utterance robot. Vids from 10 years ago so these are very much so a thing. It almost looks more trouble than its worth though and probably easier to just drive advancement in syncing movement to played audio.
Love the little subtle things that make it more realistic, the nose scrunch when he yawns really adds to the realism. Great work, can’t wait to see what else you will create. Does he react to others around him? Like can he read their mood and respond or is it all preprogrammed?
There was a moment there that really had a nice realism to it and not in a creepy way. The wink sequence is awesome. Perhaps it's not possible because of the silicone or latex skin around the eyes but the blinks could be a lot faster. Also, the speed of the eye movement could be increased if possible for more realism. Big kudos to the team that worked on this project. It's quite an achievement!
Agree - Ameca wins for me because its not trying too hard to be human - it's obviously a robot. With Ameca its the motion that makes it spooky - the skin is just plain grey silicone straight out of the mold.
@@EngineeredArtsLtd some of your best ameca robots, like the one in the channel banner, are already out of it, and ameca takes it to a whole new level. You should try putting human clothes on ameca but keeping the skin grey, and adding hair of course. Something I always notice with humanoid animatronics is that the eyelids have some kind of flashing as if they were straight from the mold, ameca doesn't have that
@@bluemamba5317 didn't think that way! Just a female robot, with similar articulation. I wonder if they can recreate classic actors/actresses like those
Idk if you’ll read this, or if it will be helpful if you do, but here’s some ideas/suggestions: I feel like this would feel less weird if you added more/longer eyelashes and added more hair the eyebrows It would make the eyelids/eye area look less unnaturally thick/stiff- and more expressive Which reminds me, there are some brilliant artists that specialize in making hyper realistic head models using silicone Perhaps you could look at some of their techniques (like how to they color things, for example) and see if there’s anything you might find useful/missed? And to clarify: This is absolutely brilliant work; I only offer these ideas on the off chance they could help you or give you an idea. Best of luck
@@EngineeredArtsLtd I highly recommend looking into the art of Abyss Creations. Yes, they are the makers of The Real Doll, however, they do make some of the most realistic looking heads in the business. They also have figured out how to "layer" silicone, in order to make more believable "skin". To fine them, just search "Real Doll". You may also remove this comment, if you find it offensive. In no way was I meaning for it to be that way....I'm 100% honest when I say that they make models that are eerily realistic. They will also do custom colors and designs. I know that a while back, they created an armature and body for someone else's humanoid robot, probably about 10 years ago, so the advancements have been leaps and bounds since that time. Thank you for sharing a fascinating video...I just wish that there was a 180 view of the head, so we could also see a profile, as well as a bit longer video....I really wanted to study the head for a longer period of time! I subbed! Take care 🙂
Eu imagino o trabalho q deu para chegar nesse nível de expressão humana. E mesmo assim causa muita estranheza. Mas é assim mesmo. Nosso olho humano é muito exigente. Faz parte da nossa segurança.
People that think this is CGI haven't been keeping up with the accelerating progress in robotics and AI over the past few years. I've got videos on my channel of me having conversations and interacting with GPT-3 AI. And just made one showing off object tracking.
You've solved a mountain of technical problems, now you see the Himalayas in front of you... Amazing, amazing technical achievement. Very easy for the layman to find fault, but wow, how far you've come!!! First robot I've ever seen that could wiggle its jaw. Congratulations, and don't stop!
honestly even with 5 actuators around the mouth is a huge difference👌does he choose the sequence of actions? or its random?or its triggered by external factor(mirroring etc.) Sorry, I cant tame my curiosity😁
The motion in this clip is a mix of predefined expressions and movement programmatically generated on the fly (scripted in Python) for example algorithms control the eyelids and brows in relation to the gaze direction - robots will look for nearby faces and respond to them , moving closer into their 'personal' space will trigger reactions like recoiling depending on the robots mood
@@EngineeredArtsLtd Impressive, are you saying the "mood" is based on a facial expressions of people surrounding the robot (adapted by the evironment) or it just restores the last memory data and analyses the outcome?
@@rana_paprika I think what they mean is the moods are predefined, like what position a "happy" face needs for every actuator, but the transitions are interpolated automatically and the emotions can be chosen automatically
Do you have a plan to make an artificial vocal and tongue for real human voice of the robot? I think that will make it looks and sounds more perfectly human!
@@savesta6127 No. Artificial vocal cord was attempted several years ago in Japan, but it was not so succesful. After that I have never seen Robot talks using real tongue and vocal cords.
This is I think the first time I'm like 100 percent sure that Fallout shit is legit possible, I'm like legit going to get in better health so I survive long enough to take my new robot body for a spin lmao.
I first saw Engineering Arts perky Adran robot in " I had a conversation with a humanoid" and it took me a bit to figure out that he was indeed being telepresence operated. He was quite impressive and entertaining , And his being blue was also a new and pleasant factor. I do like all of his 96 sibling model's and I hope that the dignified elders,Fred and Jan start to get as much deserved attention as Cleo and Ameca.
I was already impressed and fascinated by the realistic international human like characters and the graceful Cleo , and the " I had a conversation with a blue humanoid" time traveler version of Adran, in the Las Vegas video. I don't know who did the wonderfully sassy voice , but it was cool looking , great fun, and very entertaining.
This is really shocking to me, it really looks like a modern 3D character in real life. Like it looks like it has shaders and has been animated for as vide games character are. I mean of course there’s some work alike behind the scenes but man that really looks like a 2023 video game character just worm holled into our reality. Ameca is really the best, she looks AMAZING
Yes it can talk, our software will automatically generate the right visemes and the robot will use the actuators it has. This model works fine for ‘eee’ ‘ai’ ‘mm’ - but can’t do ‘fa’ and ‘ba’ as these need lips to curl around teeth.
@@EngineeredArtsLtd cool! Do you have plans on making accurate robots like movie stars? Are you doing any kind of tests using the material that stretches & contracts with a small current? Like a muscle? Thank you
The robot version one is soooo more convincing as it removes the flags triggered by our brain that make us hyper critical and noticing the uncanny valley. The robot version looks like a real robot that you would imagine.... and it is.
It is a fact that the more realistic a robot is to human, the creepier it is. It is best to make it more machine like to garner acceptance, via things like cuteness or caricature appearance.
I like this one. It looks like me when I'm sitting through a boring video meeting. The only thing I don't like is the eyes are asymmetrical and a bit square looking instead of the almond/round shape humans normally have.
I’m concerned about the possibility of new mental health disorders arising from having to distinguish between humaniform robots and human beings in day to day life. Have you considered this and, if so, have you a solution?
Now this reminds me of special effects in the 80's haha. It reminds me a bit of the movie Aliens and Bishop. I could imagine in a few short years, less than 10 maybe, you'll have a very realistic robot. Now, if you can make it have an AI personality, a large database of dialogue, and intelligent responses, then i'm sold. Imagine what it could do for people who live along, are lonely (like me haha) and also who have been living through the pandemic and had no one to talk to really.
the uncanny feeling is because the movement is slow. playback video at 2x and it starts to feel a bit more realistic. if they can get the motors to go like 5x faster, then it will be better. refer to Ameca robot.
When your heads fell off at a rave and your trying to comprehend what all the other floaty heads are saying to you whilst figuring out how to use the body you just remembered you have.
The robot actually looked like a human smiling, of it. If it weren't the wires and the mechanical part of its neck exposed, it would look like a complete human face.
En el anterior video no se veía tan aterrador, supongo que el color gris le daba su toque robótico, hasta que no sean casi perfectos ponerle color de piel humano le dará un toque medio terrorífico
@@Dr.KarlowTheOctoling 😭🤣🤣😂😅😅maybe you’re too young to understand what’s going on😅. “They” aren’t doing this for our benefit (“They” never do)😌. Soon we all will be running & hiding from what you’re looking at🤖 (“They” already perfected it Long ago)😏. “They” are just now preparing you to accept it😏
I am impressed...this is human creativity at its best. Was hoping you keep the robotic look though (etc Ameca). We have worked on bio-inspired AI models solving the computer vision problem and general intelligence. What we have learnt was AI should not affect the human emotional component in a major way else humanity is in trouble. Human decision making is highly affected by emotions, creating robots that can spark emotions in humans is a mistake we will all regret.
That was awesome. But it looks like he is high a little bit. That was the first impression. There is something unnatural with his eyelids. Yes I think it's eyelids.
If the facial gestures, were not over imposed, it would've been more creepier then a sci-fi movie scene. The word "Impossible," has now become a late historical term, just like "privacy."
I think you missed an opportunity to make the head of Ian Holm and have it say "...it's a perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility..."
