I know it's been a while since you asked, but I recognize the General's charcoal pencils he was using, as I have a set of them. • { ElizaChu } • personally i draw line across my picture and the same one on my paper and i try to free hand but i use my lines to measure where things are supposed to be. i also find out exactly how much bigger everything on my drawing should be as well. it's complicated to explain but you could just use a grid

@@JDHillberry1 paper does not matter in most drawings. Me on the other hand uses a cheap throw away recycled paper because i practiced the best drawing and put the final on the sketchbook. It may look though but its for the best for not thinking wasting expensive paper than focusing how to make it better at rendering when it cpmes to drawing.

@@someguyanime2286 It depends on the type of drawing you are doing. If you are trying to learn to render realistic looking textures, everything you learn on cheap throw away paper, can't be applied when you switch to better archival paper for the final drawing.

I use Arches 140lbs hot press watercolor paper for most of my portraits like this one.

I don't use any white pencils. I use the white of the paper for highlights. The two white tools you may have seen in the video are an eraser pen, and a stump. Hope this helps.
