Welcome to Pencil Drawing Techniques with JD Hillberry. I've been a professional pencil artist for over 30 years and have made my living from selling my realistic pencil drawings and drawing techniques. I offer live drawing workshops, free drawing technique videos, as well as detailed, online drawing tutorials. I won't waste your time talking about my artwork and career here. If you want to learn more about me, just Google JD Hillberry. I really love to help pencil artists improve their drawing ability and I hope you find the drawing tips and suggestions here helpful.
Hey, thank you for this. It was very helpful. Could you help me by any chance? I've been trying to find a good smooth paper for my hyperealism drawing but A2 size. Do you have any recommendations? I've been trying to look, but it's a little overwhelming.
Marie's work is incredible! She's an amazing artist and I love following her social media to watch drawings develop. They are all absolutely beautiful and capture the spirit of the animal.
Incredible work, Marie! I just received the supplies I didn't have for JD's technique & am looking forward to improving my work. Hope I can get as good as you!

Love this still life, the variety of textures reallyenhance it. I've had your collection of tutorials a while and appreciate being to go back and review an area as needed. Also, started rewatching the lot of them, always pick up something I've forgotten. Thanks for all your work.
Доброе утро! Ваша техника впечатляет. Мне очень нравится фотореализм в графике. Подумываю о покупке ваших обучающих курсов. И хоть абсолютно не владею английским языком, думаю, что визуально смогу понять, что к чему.
As usual, very nice drawing. Love the way the highlights pop off the paper. When people come in to our gallery asking about drawing lessons, I always refer them to your website and RU-vid channel. Hope you're doing well.
Just stumbled on this video!! Hallelujah!! I have had a p-divider for a few years and gave up trying to find a good use for it. (I'm kinda slow I guess) I have used the grid system for lets say 65 years. It has served me well. However I have gotten tired of erasing lines. (imagine that) Seeing the combination of the modified grid ( which I have tried with unsatisfactory results for me) and the proportional divider in combination, the light has come on!!🤪 THANK YOU!!!!
They make gloves for drawing too to keep the oils off, you dont have to tape a piece of paper to your hand lol. When you buy a digital graphics pad they often come with one thats very similar to protect the screen from your oils and fingerprints but they have them specifically for traditional drawing as well.
I am currently working through an online drawing course and the most difficult thing I have encountered so far is getting the angles and proportions right. Last week I got a proportional divider and it's brilliant! I do not want to become a slave to it, though, because I want to train my eye to see the angles and proportions, but initially it is really helping, and it will be a useful tool for checking the end results, too. If I were to draw an accurate portrait, I would certainly use it. I love your portrait of the gentleman at the end of the video - such a beautiful drawing of a really interesting and characterful face.
Thanks! Yes. The using the proportional divider will help train you to see shapes, angles and distances much better. To begin with, you can just test yourself for accuracy. Do it by eye, then immediately check to see how you did. You'll soon realize the mistakes you communally make and begin to get it right the first time by eye.
@@JDHillberry1 Thank you for your reply. That's good advice. I'm fnding this so difficult at the moment and it is good to know that your eye eventually does get trained to do it! I expect a lot of other people experience the same difficulty initially, so this will be very reassuring for everyone.

Oh my word! What can I say other than perfect! Breathtakingly beautiful, it is literally unreal how well you can draw so so realistic is your work. It's just breathtaking! I'm so thankful that I found your page. I hope to continue to enjoy your work and your drawing technique to help us all. Thank you for sharing! It's so appreciated! God bless you and your career!
Oh oh. Correction. How marvelous it is that you're helping us with this technique thank you, I so needed that. However your pencil marks were so light that I've seen nothing. Is there anyway that you could do the same but with a darker pencil or pen and a marker. LOL ingratitude.
This is like one of those bonafide “I mean, well, duh!” moment for me. I kept restricting myself to freehanding it so when someone tells me I can actually measure and pros do it too, I’m like “oh right I can do that too.”
