I also love the final details with the pen. I painted along with you and can see that I am improving bit by bit and I am most often so pleased with what shows up on the paper. When you work quickly it makes me relax and just 'go for it' and that is the feeling I want from my work. Thank you. Very well done. AGAIN.
Definitely prefer the bold lines. I've just recently discovered your tutorials and you've helped me so much in loosening up my lines. Your tutorials, your voice), are easy to listen to and your visuals are direct and clear. So glad I found you and follow you on Instagram. Thank you!
You have changed my whole perspective on art! I've just started urban sketching after watching your videos and have never enjoyed something creative this much! Can't wait to do more. Thank you for inspiring :)
I’ve watched a lot of tutorials, and yours are by far the simplest and more comfortable to follow. I had to laugh I’m in Arizona and in the summer we keep the windows CLOSED ☺️
Haha this is a lesson I learned in the heat - windows and curtains closed. Sadly we don't have Aircon, so the best we can do is turn a fan on and hope for the best 😂
Excelente trabajo!!, La pluma Lamy que ha utilizado la tinta es permanente y resistente al agua, o es tinta normal. Muchas gracias por sus enseñanzas, tienes nuevo suscriptor
Toby, thank you for sharing this sketch. I am a newbie looking to make sketching and watercolor in my own means and methods. I started with really detailing urban sketches and people and find more happiness suggesting rather than documenting. I really enjoyed listening to your thoughts ask you sketched which helps me connect the lines with your visualization. Have a great day!
Another really helpful video, many tips and techniques in a short time and showing how sketches can be done quickly. I prefer the 'after', I find differentiating the built from the natural adds definition to a scene and can help with perspective. Thank you.
This was fun, loved both sketches but agree the bold lines defined the houses more clearly. Wish I could walk this street into town like you do, so lovely and different from my suburban neighborhood. Excellent tutorial with perfect voice over and low music in background. New subscriber here. Thanks so much.
I wanted the buildings to be brown! What you did was very attractive. Should give us all confidence. Your voiceover is always encouraging and confident!
Prefer the the "before" @11:50. I liked the almost minimalistic look of not adding colour to the building walls. The bold lines draw attention to empty white space and takes away from the overall composition.
Yes! Me too... In fact, I was skimming through all the comments to see if anyone else felt the same. The first sketch was fabulous with the lighter strokes giving a washed-out feel to the entire piece. Super work, Toby... I discovered your channel recently and it's giving me the push to pick up my watercolors again! Thanks for sharing such lovely tips🙏👍
Thanks I have a similar vista of a canal scenario near me in bathampton just outside bath NE Somerset these techniques will work out just as well although the water will need to be worked on kindest regards mickT
Thank you so much for this very encouraging work of art. I particularly liked that you could sort of bring your own interpretation into the work, which I would now like to try. I have always been self-conscious about my art work, but your approach seems excellent. I really like the idea too that you can sketch something like this, and use your own colouring, add interesting further details if you wish. So I’m very glad I found your video, because I do so think your style and approach, and way of sketching are delightful! I also liked that you tended to concentrate on a suggestion of some of the items in the picture, and I do think that this is interestingly very effective. Thanks, again, and I’ll look forward to practicing and enjoying more of your work in the future.
Hi Toby I discovered your tutorials yesterday & was amazed to see my local town! I will be working my way through all your tutorials. I also prefer the bold lines at the end. Your sketches are great. Thankyou. When you are out & about & painting in a sketchbook, what paper thickness would you recommend? as I notice you use quite a lot of water (probably where I'm going wrong 😅)
Hello from St Neots! Come along to the Urban Sketch meet ups if you fancy it :) For sketching like this - minimum 150gsm, but that can be a bit dicey. I usually use Moleskin sketchbooks - 220gsm - but my paper is all a minimum of 300gsm.
Really enjoyed that., magic! You made it look so easy, and gave me confidence. Yes the added black lines were fun ….definitely completed the piece, i woulda added a pop of red colour on the car for extra contrast, without over doing. Subscribing. Thankyou 😊

Flask Walk? If it is FW I nearly moved into a house there yonks ago and my neighbour would have been actor Phylis Logan (known nowadays for Downton Abbey). I'm sure she moved into a bigger house by now... P
Great How To....and very encouraging for beginners. However, I think leaving the buildings white hints at unfinished...but in 10 minutes, the result is impressive.....now, where is my brand new drawing kit.......?
Toby this is great. Prefer the bolder lines but want to know why you didn’t detail the large tree. Would that counter the negative space you trying to create as it would be too similar?
Thanks for the comment and good question. The simple answer is I often don't add much detail to trees, normally an outline and a suggestion of detail. Especially for quick sketching 😊
Love your stuff! Been inspired to have -another!- go myself? Have to say I preferred to ‘before’ though really liked your other vid with the ‘Nelsons” shop after you’d used the larger outliner there!?
Je comprends juste un peu de français :) mais (hopefully) suffisamment pour comprendre votre commentaire et vous dire merci ! I hope that makes sense hehe
Is there video somewhere on loading paint onto the brush: how much water, when to rinse, how to keep the water and pans clean? Everyone does it so deftly but I struggle.
Found it curious the negative remarks about the clean up or heavy line. (A good reason not to put content out there). Wondering if a side by side of the Unibal and the yellow fountain pen; wonder how small quick side by side vignettes would compare / contrast or have you noticed in your experience any discernible difference? Thank you for your work. It appears to me that you are assembling works for a book - yes-no? Think about it
I could watch you for hours, my sketching is abysmal I can't seem to get the perspective or angles right. I'm ok with flowers and trees but not with buildings at all so very rewarding to watch you😊
I loved your loose style but you verticals, vanishing lines and scale are all spot on even if tgey are loose, for me the archway door way a little too bold although the White fur seal on the right hand side did dissapear when the bold pen came back 😊😊
Question (stoopid one I know): Better to stick to one single/continuous line or is it OK to break the line (and then, better to try and continue at the same point I left off)?
Wow! Just took your advice and did a quick loose still life…I actually like it! In less than 10 minutes I produced two apples, two bananas, an orange and a vase with a monstera branch. Who knew it was even possible? I didn’t!
There is no rule, :) I could do this sketch with a fine liner, a fountain pen, a chisel marker, a fude pen - they'd all feel a little different, but definitely look like my style. Find what fits you with a bit of experimentation. Just needs to be waterproof - check out urbansketch.co.uk/supplies if you want to see the things I like to use most of all
I’m a beginner and learned a lot watching this. The suggestion of the steps and how to loosely draw is very helpful to me. I’m still trying to discover my style.
