There are HUNDREDS of "set up your daw" videos, this is the first one that has helped me. All the others assume you already know something (or a lot) of the process, this one starts at step one and helped tremendously, Thank you.
Hey everyone, I'm having a very specific issue that I am not able to solve and would really appreciate some help. When I insert a new track on Reaper, and then click the recording arm (in order to select my midi input option in the "input fx window"), there is a seriously loud signal noise that gets louder and louder by the second and doesn't stop until I change its default selection which is Mono: HD Audio Stereo track 1, to Midi input All Channels. So, I want to know why that sound is coming. When I was using Reaper on a different comp before, it wasn't like this. But now on my laptop, this signal clashing sound is coming and it is so freakishly loud to the point of almost giving me a heart attack. Please do assist me!!
@@aaryamannambiar6677 Sounds like a feedback issue I once had where I hadn't set up my interface properly so it was just using the microphone and speakers of my laptop. Make sure all your ins and outs are in the right place
I’m 70 years old and have never used a DAW. A friend who I played guitar with YEARS ago now wants to collaborate on some tunes from our past. I was completely baffled after installing Reaper and any other tutorials, or the documentation, were aimed at those who already have some background. So I got a focusrite solo gen II, found your videos, and off I go. I am so grateful for this content. I have no more hair to pull out.
12:20 Just wanna add a bit here. Since you're saying Reaper can be used fully without buying the program, I'd like to make sure people don't get this wrong: You can use it to produce music with all features, but if you want to sell that music, you do have to buy the license, legally speaking.
You can even sell your music using the reaper daw as long as you don’t make over a certain amount of money using it, I believe it is 20,000 dollars a year, they allow you to use the discounted license. It’s a pretty amazing company!
I for one am very happy this starts at square one. I have never used a DAW so I am satisfied completely with the video starting at the beginning. I like how this video was done too, professional and very well done. Thanks for doing this........it is great!
Though im coming in WAY later then Bobby did, I agree 100% This video spoke to me because it assumed correctly that I knew nothing about the program and didn't make me feel dumb for it,
Dude a week ago you helped me choose an interface which is now in my house, and now you make a tutorial right on the very day when I'm back to this DAW.... nice telepathic skills, appreciated.
He IS telepathic... Toward the end, I was thinking 'I really hope it's possible to give individual drums their own tracks' then he specifically stated that he would cover that in a future video!
3 years later this tutorial is still amazing! I'm new to Reaper and this tutorial by far helped me comprehend the basic ins and outs of the software! I love that you explained why we use specific settings instead of just saying "Use this because I said so" or assuming we knew all the terminology. Very excited to watch the next parts!

@@adamsteelproducer I could really use a video about how to make tracks on Reaper in true stereo!! I am a complete beginner and doing all tracks drums bass guitars and trying to do everything myself.. Thanks so much
I'm a complete beginner, only heard about Reaper 2 days ago. This has to be one of the best tutorials on any subject that I have ever followed, and I mean over the last 50 years! Solved my setup issues on an old laptop, solved my problem hearing the playback. Brilliant!
In the first fifteen minutes of watching this video, I've learned more about audio production than I have in the last fifteen months from googling terminology I didn't understand or were poorly explained in other software manuals. I've been ranting to my partner that whoever writes guides and manuals for DAW's seems to assume you have a Masters Degree in sound engineering and never try to teach you why you set up in a certain way. So thank you!
You do an excellent job of explaining the basics without patronising your viewers. It works because you put yourself in the position of a beginner. Thank you very much for such a lucid tutorial. Afetr many years working in a RISCOS environment (look that up!) I am entering the C21st and dipping my ears into the DAW world - steep learning curve!
Thanks to everyone on the team, I've finally, after years of deliberating and getting frustrated with the technical side of recording, decided to record my first song. Many thanks, you guys are awesome.
Amazing tutorial, Adam. I am one of those guys that grew up on Pro Tools because everyone in music production said you HAD to know that software, and that software only. I've been out of the game for about 5 years, just getting back into it now as a hobby and this has helped me tremendously after finding Reaper as an alternative to PT. Thank you for this in depth tutorial, your teaching and step by step instructions are so easy to follow - cheers!
This is a really great introduction to reaper for those new to working with DAWs, it covers all the basics needed to get you up and running, and is communicated in a way that is easily understood. Good work!!
I've always struggled with DAW's, I promise myself every year to master one so that i can share my guitar skills with the world but I gave up on the idea as it has always been to difficult to do even with online lessons. The way you"ve been so patient throughout the video gave me a boost. Thank you so much!!
No, seriously - SERIOUSLY! You just HAVE TO WATCH THIS WITH THE SOUND MUTED! You HAVE TO! This man's presenting talents are UNBELIEVABLE! He really should be on mainstream TV for those gesticulations - holidays, automatic egg friers, the six o'clock news, footie, anything. Even with the sound muted, one gets the sense that he's absolutely hollering his head off! AMAZING TALENT! For the DAW, thanks for a really good video. It will get you loaded and started and it's definitely a good DAW, loads of people use it. It also comes with a very complete run-down on all that you can do with it and that's a lot. I'm too thick but if you can stand the headaches of learning all that shite, you can go far. BUT YOU MUST WATCH THIS VIDEO WITH THE SOUND MUTED, YOU REALLY MUST!!!! I'M TELLING YOU, IT'S MOST EXTRAORDINARY! YOU MUST DO IT! DON'T MISS OUT! AND DON'T FORGET TO "LIKE" IT!
Thank you so much for this! I am an old metal head (50 years old 😂) and I’ve written a lot of music. Now that my kids are grown up I want to record it. I have a new MOTU M4 and Reaper. So this has been extremely helpful!
I am new to DAW this is the best video I have seen explaining the basics and convinced me to buy the reaper I am going to now review all the videos created by Hop, GREAT JOB!
So many other videos just showing up how proficient the presenter is in using Reaper. This man is professional in explaining things in the clearest and quickest ways. English s my second language and normallyI misses many words especially in topics unfamiliar. I dont know how this guy is doing it, but I did not miss a single word of his tutorial. A great thanks to you mate! You have great skill!!!
I have nightmare's with DAWs. I've been trying a few different ones lately. I just got Reaper today and had the usual attack of Press EVERYTHING and wait for a noise, then came here. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. At last, somebody that can explain something clearly. I followed every step with ease. Now I can use my stash of cool VSTs. You're a star !
Spectacular! As a bassist JUST getting into home recording (no experience what-so-ever) this is everything I've been looking for as a starting point. Thank you so much.
A much needed and thorough tutorial, thanks so much for being organized and staying on point. Most hour long videos have 10 minutes of actual content, this is a gold mine of information for the uninitiated.
What a clear, well explained tutorial. Fantastic. I never felt like I was being talked down to, or that information was being handwaved as 'too advanced' for me. Simultaneously, I was able to follow along with every step very well and keep up with what was happening. You are a fantastic teacher!
Regarding latency: the human threshold for real time is 16 ms. Above that the brain is able to discern a delay. Just leaving that here as a little info. Great video though!
I am not sure if that is correct because if I double a solo guitar track and add 10 to 20 ms of delay, I can certainly tell the difference. (Doing this creates the audio impression of the delayed track being a separately recorded track.) On the other hand, if I try using less than 10 ms of delay, I can't hear a difference, unless I reduce it down to 0ms, then is just sounds wrong, because of it being a duplicate track.
10-15 is ok for say keyboard vstis but many will want 1-8 for real-time input/output. Depends. For edrumming connected to vsti for example, lowest possible, which for me is 1ms in and 1ms out.
@@ButeSound Agreed, you definitely do not want latency for drums, and more than 6 ms will throw you/the player off if recording a live guitar. In my example, I was talking about tracks that are recorded dry, the duplicated track and and added delay is for creating the impression of a doubled track. It's a great time saver if you are mixing on a strict schedule.
I've been trying to find a good Reaper tutorial for weeks and this is genuinely the best one out there. It's concise, thorough, and I didn't feel like I was being talked down to. Really awesome stuff, thank you.
I came to Reaper after finding out a colleague used it to record an EP with in his apartment. Having tried GarageBand and ProTools in the past, I am still a beginner. I downloaded Reaper while following this video. My interface is a Scarlett 2i2 2nd Gen and I was able to update the driver as he explains. So far all of these steps are working perfectly as described. Thanks for the easy to follow presentation. I am really looking forward to this program.
took me quite a while to get my synth (hooked up through usb) to work with manageable latency but i am now ready to start this journey of figuring out how daws work.
Thank you. I'm an old analog head tryn to adapt to digital. I grabbed Reaper because it looked more like an analog setup. That didn't help. I watched, all the while tryn not to jump ahead, and once i heard myself thru my interface, and knew I was in the right place. Good job!
What a great tutorial. You explain things in great detail, always work at the same speed, talk clearly, and display things so they are easy to see. This has helped me a lot. I watched too many tutorials where they start out as you do but then they would be clicking everywhere and start working much faster all over the place and I get lost pretty quick.
I have just discovered this, after hours of going through many 'Introduction to Reaper' videos. I can honestly say this is the best one! It's a shame the recommendation didn't come up sooner. This is a no nonsense, informative, step by step guide, even for studio beginners. I have just subscribed! Looking forward to watching more of Hop Pole Studios content. Thank you!
Congrats to guys on Reaper. I've spent years using reaper casually as evaluation, but I recently just bought it and it felt good! Says a lot about the quality of the product, hopefully every user does it like me and buys it eventually!
Without a doubt the best hour I've spent ever on RU-vid ! I really can't thank you enough for this tutorial. You've put light back into a dark room full of recording equipment I thought would take my whole life to learn literally and metaphorically . .. I'm blowing the dust off my interface and old school Wurlitzer synth to lay some heavy bass Halloween ish tracks right now . ! . Thanks again..
As someone who’s been making music for years and gathered up some experience you’ve done the best “hey I wanna make music can you teach me how?” video response I need when someone asks me. This didn’t miss anything!
This is fantastic and should be on the official Reaper website 👍 thank you so much, from a complete n00b just starting out in recording my own guitar/music 🤘😉🤘
This is a great video I have had Reaper for at least 5 years, maybe more, and have I used it on and off for that time but just could not get it to work properly for me. Yesterday I decided to take the plunge and move to Reaper completely as I've been using two Korg D1600 machines midi'd together. I have a Behringer X Air 18 as my audio interface and an X touch as my mixing desk, I like to touch faders. :) I am not a novice but I thought let me see if there is anyone who might be able to give me some more info on my setup as I'm determined to make it work. I found this video and I must say this is the most comprehensive tutorial on Reaper that I've seen IMO. I will be going on to part 2. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Really, man... You calm me. I have to learn all this and, even if I clic pause to cry from time to time... YOU ARE THE BEST I FOUND. You are just perfect...you had to be a bassist.
I started watching this with trepidation when I saw it was an hour long and you said you started with the basics, which I thought I knew. Apart from the installing Reaper bit at the very beginning (I have been using Reaper just as a VST host for my Akai EWI windsynth), there was absolutely loads for me to learn, especially little/big things like selecting and the timeline (never needed to record anything with the EWI). I'm glad I took the time to watch. Many thanks for the tutorial.
Recently bought a Donner DED 200 electric drum kit and could not figure out how to set up MIDI drums after LITERALLY HOURS of googling, watching videos, etc. I even found an entire reddit thread by a bunch of software programmers who trouble-shot the source code from the drum brain and claimed that specific model of e-drum kit was faulty and that there was no hope for MIDI recording. I watched this video and got it to work right away lol. Super helpful. Thank you so much!
Thankfully a Google search led me to this video straightaway, and I'm glad it did. I just installed Reaper tonight, so I'm starting with zero knowledge about it. Although I'm not a complete stranger to audio mixers and simple recording projects, I needed something that started with the basics from installation onward. Since most of my Reaper use will be mixing down tracks recorded live on the Soundcraft mixer at my band's shows, I'm really looking forward to continuing with this entire series. You gained a new subscriber tonight. Thanks!
This was so helpful! Being in quarantine and wanting to record my own music seems so daunting and complicated, but your breakdown of everything makes it so easy to understand. Thank you!
So I've tried multiple tutorials and multiple DAWs. But this one is the only good one, where the person actually talks as if he's instructing a complete beginner. Very well done! I'm going to stick with Reaper because of this tutorial now, and also because Reaper is pretty similar to Sony Vegas which I already know well.
I am completely and utterly new to trying anything music-related. I've been looking into trying to get into making like synthwave music like Stranger Things and such but I am a complete blank slate when it comes to knowing anything about anything like this, so, this was incredibly helpful for someone who didn't even know the remote basics of anything. I wanted to thank you very much for taking the time and having such a comprehensive how-to video made. This was so amazing for someone like me who had absolutely zero clue where to even start Lol
Great video - I've been using Reaper for over ten years, but recently I've been going back over my software and hardware for any blind spots, so I thought I'd watch through these as I usually find there's always at least one thing I didn't realise or could be doing easier/faster. Not only was this a good way of checking stuff I already knew because the pace of it, but it made me double check my settings and realised there were a couple of bits - buffer and bit rate recording size - that I could tweak and improve. Anyway, thanks!
Quite simply the clearest, most informative instruction vid ever! I'm new to Reaper (having used Garage band before). I've just taken on a big audio mixing project. All live recorded audio files. I'm full of confidence now. Thanks, Adam.
The BEST information I have found by far! I've beaten my head on the wall with ALL the other daws, but here I have found myself actually understanding what i needed to get my ideas out with no problems. Thanks a million from North Louisiana; your passion and flow of presentation makes this easy and fun to follow! Truly, thank you brother...and now im on to soak up the next!
Now with social distancing I’m going to record at home and send tracks to my producer. He suggested I look at Reaper and some free DAWs instead of ProTools since he says the learning curve is steep. I stumbled in your video and what a coincidence that I just bought the same Sono. I love that you’re starting literally at square one. You made it easy to choose Reaper. Thank you so much for such a well put together video.
This was brilliant dude. Old time user of Pro Tools and Cakewalk when it was still called that back in the day and haven't been making music or producing for nearly 7 years now and recently got back into it using Reaper and this guide has been immensely helpful. Big thanks!
I agree with all of the other viewers that this instructional video is the very best quality possible! Here, you have a DAW that is, apparently, awesome, and a guy who can explain it in a straightforward way that is super easy to understand. The other part of it is that Adam has true passion for what he is doing, and that comes through so strongly! This is truly inspirational! Like other users, it gave me a huge inspirational boost that made me want to get Reaper (right now!), get it going, and get beyond all of the frustrating and disappointing experiences I have had from the other DAWS I have tried up to this point. I think I have finally found the DAW I have been searching for. Good work Adam! You rock!
Thanks so much for this. I love the way you take us through at a relaxed rate, rather than the frenzy of a lot of similar ones. Really clear and helpful.
59:18 you can also keep "shift" and you can adjust it as you want, thank you so much for all this videos, Im not a native english speaker but the way you talk is really easy to understand youre amazing
Hands down the best intro to Reaper I have seen. Especially if you come with little background knowledge about DAW's. Cutting straight through all the fluff and concentrating on the required bits to get up and running. Covering important stuff like installing interface drivers first. GREAT TUTORIAL THANK YOU:
Hello my friend, I downloaded Reaper yesterday on my PC, I've been using Logic on my Mac for year's and been using Ableton Live 10 on PC. I would just like to say a massive thanks to you for your videos on Reaper...your my go to guy for learning this DAW...there sure is a lot to it isn't there:) I'm seriosly impressed with it so far. Anyways off to watch your other tutorials now. Once again, thank you for your tutorials, I think how you do it is fantastic and great to follow. Cheers.
I wish this video was here when I started with reaper. I found it a nitemare to set up with omnisphere, eventually I found a track routing template for omnisphere and reaper on spectrasonics website. This is an excellent vid.
I've watched this video so many times and the comment about having more strings than usual on your bass ("...But that's a conversation for another time...") remains my favorite part ever.
I’ve been recording on Reaper for a year or so only with the knowledge that a friend taught me in 15 minutes. So glad I finally decided to sit down and watch this tutorial. It’s opened up a few options I have never delved into. I have winters off so it’s time to get busy in the studio. Thanks for all the valuable information.
I'm contemplating on moving from Logic to Reaper, so here I go on learning about Reaper. I will give unbiased feedback. Edit: This was really helpful. Some good tips and gems for anyone getting into music recording. Well explained and makes introducing oneself to Reaper a smooth journey.
Worth noting that the Distrokid plug while those type of in video ads are often a pain, due to the transparency, quality of the delivery of this content or wasn't for me. Thank you guys for thos video and making this feel accessible to even a technical mute like myself. Truelly appreciate the time this took.
Hey Adam, thanks a bunch for this. A consultant now, I have worked as executive producer and post production manager in advertising production, and been an amateur guitar player for a few centuries... ;) have edited on Final Cut quite a bit in my time, but never ever used a DAW or recorded any music, though I'm familiar with the concepts I guess. Just rebuilding my guitar rig and acquiring basic audio equipment as I'd like to record stuff at home, maybe ambient music (or doom metal depending on the day hahaha). Looked at a couple of DAWs, instantly liked Reaper for its intuitive interface, started yesterday.... so it's noob day 2... thanks for your vid, very clear, straightforward info based on pragmatic questions, just the perfect pace, you have a definite talent for teaching. Will certainly follow the series. Subbed.
Hi Adam, Thanks a lot for this tutorial. For someone who's always had a problem understanding tutorials for anything technical, you have made me so happy. Looking forward to the other tutorials..
You've earned a sub with this. A lot of good info on starting out with using Reaper, and a bunch of extra tidbits of information with general mastering, VSTs and MIDI, and other goodies. Big thanks, gonna be checking out more videos.
thank you i downloaded reaper and love it solved my problem i was having recording with my new computer and set up as i am new to all of this but did it 10 years ago with adobe studio i was so frustrated man you saved me i was ready to give up and sell it all my issue was not knowing how to set up and sync my focusrite scarlett solo to my new computer and that whole buffer rate and progect rate was set to 41 on the computer and my scarlett was 48 and was a bad out of time delay thanks for the video im well on my way to having fun making music again
this is great for a total beginner regarding recording, has i am, although i play guitar for a couple years now, i never recorded anything and i want to say a tip for anyone that might have some money problems and cant buy a audio interface or doesnt have any or enough pedals or amp, you can buy a 6.35mm female to 3.5mm male jack adapter has cheap has 1-5€, on o local electronics store i bought one for 1.25€ and ding, conect guitar directly to pc trough headphones input and use all vst to simulate effects and amp. enjoy it virtually free
Hi, Adam. I set up my first interface and DAW last night, using this video as a guide. I just wanted to say a great big THANK YOU! I have been watching your Reaper videos whilst waiting to get my interface and have already learned so much. Together with the latest Reaper and your videos, I can’t wait to start recording so again, thank you so much for taking the time to help us amateurs get started! It really is appreciated. Cheers from Madrid.
Great work. Thx! Have seen countless vids on starting w reaper. Yours sure is one of the most concise and precise explanations. Also great and sympathetic presentation as always here. ! Besides the seamless integration of win, mac and linux cannot be overstated, i've running it on all 3 natively w/o any problems and brilliant performance on not-so-great hardware
I looked for ages on youtube trying to find a tutorial like this. A simple step by step easy to follow video and here it is!! So easy to follow with just enough depth and detail without it feeling too overwhelming. Thankyou!! Adam was to the point, funny, and made me want to keep listening and learn. Brilliant!
Yah, NEVER wear pin stripes when doing video EVER. Always encourage anyone your recording to not wear them. He's an audio guy so lots of grace here from me :)
I've been doing audio production for a long time, and helped make DAWs back in the last century. I've been learning new tools to let me be more creative, and was recently introduced to Reaper. This video helped get me get a very good understanding of the basics, it's learning a new layout for things that are very familiar to me. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this easy to follow and comprehensive video. As someone who has started from basically zero this is an absolute godsend. I really appreciate it.
Thanks Adam, this is a great introductory course to Reaper. I've heard a lot of people say they're put off by the complexity of the interface - so far you've done an excellent job of demystifying it
for me the asio dsen't work i have tried a driver before but it messed up my hole sound system so i could not use my headset or microphone or anything else that had to do with sound. it was asio4all
This is literally my first comment on a video. Thank you so much for this. I was gonna start to learn Reaper the "old fashioned way". This one video has saved me hours of wasted time hunting for the right button or menu reqd to make something happen. Awesome job. Can r wait to view the rest of the series.
Thank you for this video! I've been messing with REAPER for years and am self taught (if that's what you want to call it). I only used it for demos and such but I have a project I need to have a bit more competence on so I'm starting at the beginning all over. This is perfect. Looking forward to your other videos. Also - keep mentioning those shortcuts & hot-keys. They are brilliant!
