I just put a new freehub body as we 2 new bearings. And its really sticktiony. I almost wanna take it back off and remove all the seals cuz i know thats what causing it. But we will go a couple rides first before i make that decision This is by far best video how to remove and re assemble a rear freehib and bearings/axle... i have a roadbike wheel its similiar where there are shoulders pn axle so the drive side besring is 2 mm in er diameter larger than non drive side. So took a bit shoping around to figure the right size bearing.. Thank you my dude!
@@JoeyMesa I'd probably only use it a couple of times so no point in buying one lol , another thing I did was to put a socket inside the axel when putting the first bearing in to keep it central .
@@JoeyMesa after fitting my wheel to my frame I can get my brake not to rub . And when I look at the axel end cap ( think it's called ?) It's stick out like 1mm from the hub on the disc side , is the black metal end cap supposed to sit fit flush with the metal on the hub? I'm sure I properly pressed the bearing in because it wouldn't goq in any more
Thanks a million times! My rear hub had an M17 XZN (twelve caps) lock inside, otherwise it was the same. Tbh at first I mistook the lock for a bearing and was wondering why the reel is not coming off.
Dude - I know this video is old... but that Beard! Anyway, you saved me big $$ with the bearing press kit (which I already owned). Didn't have to drop the cash on a DT Swiss service kit. I'm sure one day... but now I can pay my rent.
again perfect timing.. I have same Trek Checkpoint with exact same hub my bearings are toast.. cleaned out and re-packed with grease seemed ok but once assembled still rumbling away..
Just happend on this -luck would have it is same hub/free hub as on my Giant Slr1 2017 carbon road wheels ! too much wobble because of a kanckerd beraing - got them out -now to try and press new bearings in without all the bearing press kit! wish me luck!
Nice video. Happy New Year to you and your family. The Wheels Manufacturing press is a really nice tool to have. The retaining clip system used to retain the 3 pawls is so much easier than the old campag 1 spring under each pawl system., an absolute nightmare to get back into the hub she'll (if you have a "special knack" please let me know 😀) I would love to see you pull a Chris King hub apart . Thanks Paul! Campy makes a little tool that holds all the pawls down until they're partially inserted into the hub, then remove the tool. a string looped around works ok as well. I usually service a few Chris King hubs every year. I'll get some video footage next chance I get. Thanks for your feedback sir!
im trying to get mine but its really stuck. tried to add som cogs and use as lever to pull it off but the damn hub is stuck... any tip in how to remove a stubern one? thanks
How can I find the correct bearings because the ones that I took out are the same as these like LLB on one side and LLU on one side . But everywhere is just selling either one or the other not with 2 different seals on each side
Awesome video. I need the outer cap for the drive side...the reverse threaded one that says "loosen" on it. Anyone know where can I get that? I bought a set of wheels with this hub set up but it has an xd drive hub. I'm switching to HG so I can have the same cassettes on all sets of wheels. Cap for the XD freehub won't work with HG
what does, Precision Bearing GRAVITY REAR BLK ANOD. CASSETTE DISCBRAKE W/RCC HUB, W/RLCA mean??? my bearings need replacing. sound very rough and have play in the cassette. are these sealed bearings or loose bearings??? having a hard time finding the answer to that

Joey a few questions...so the spacer in the freehub should not be tight against both bearings? I see you can maneuver the spacer to line it up. Also do you ever pull the seal off of cartridge bearings to renew them? Or just replace? Thanks for your great videos!!
As far as the spacer between the bearings in the free hub, It's kind of a feel thing, but I usually press the bearings into the free hub body just to the point where the bearings just contact the spacer, but at a point where the spacer can still be moved with some effort to allow the axle to pass through the bearings and spacer. If you press the bearings in to the point where they're fully contacting the bearings, it's hard to get the axle through unless you've managed to allaying the spacer in the exact location to allow the axle to pass through. If the spacer is able to move slightly, once you pinch down the axle into the frame, it will seat the bearings that last little bit. The end result is that the spacer should be sandwiched tight between the bearings and and caps. I've definitely removed the seals to clean and relube cartridge bearings, but that's really just a temporary fix. The vast majority of the time, replacing the bearings, if needed, is the correct procedure is the bearings are rough or notchy feeling. I say if needed because on the flip side of the coin, I get a lot of requests to replace cartridge bearings that are in really good condition.

Thanks! Replacing the bearings would be less expensive, but it depends on the overall condition of your existing hubs as well. If the free hub is in poor condition or the shoulder on the axle is damaged, new hubs would be a good idea.
Hey Joey, I’m trying to service the exact same hub and, like you am having difficulty removing the freehub from the axle. How the heck did you do it! I suspect bearing are seized to the axle. I’ve tried to break the bond with WD40 lithium grease spray, also an oil product. No luck. Any suggestions?.

The sizes will vary depending on the brand of hub you are servicing. There is no one size that fits all MTB hubs, there are probably around 20 common sizes. The bearing size (6902 in the case of the bearings in the free hub of this particular hub) will generally be printed on the seal on the bearing. If the size is not printed, you can measure the OD, the ID and the width of the bearing and put those measurements into a bearing size chart like this one: www.mrosupply.com/blog/ball-bearings-size-chart/

These are all tools that are owned by the bike shop. (Elevation Cycles in Parker Colorado), but I would guess the tools used in the video would retail for $300-400. These are all professional grade tools that get used every day. I basically wanted to demonstrate the process, but you certainly can accomplish the same results with some creativity and very basic tools ( correct size sockets, quick release skewer, Etc.).
@@JoeyMesa so it's better and cheaper to take hub to local shop or order fresh hub from China I have two formula 20 hubs that need service and new bearings I'm a car mechanic so I'm ok to do it myself but tools required for the job are too expensive 🤷🏻♂️ Thank you very much for reply
