I replaced the rear driveshaft on my Ford Escape. Once the car reached about 45mph, the whole car would shake, especially the center console. When I bought the car used the driveshaft was already dented.

I pulled the driveshaft off on my Escape and never replaced it. It is still front wheel drive which is no problem in the snow or rain. All wheel drive is totally unnecessary unless you live in constant mud or ice. I have 2 trucks which are 4 wheel drive for that. Don't forget to change the oil on the PTU of that car before it grenades. The PTU is the tiny transfer case for that car.

I'm 900 miles from home and the carrier bearing shit out on me. Gonna have to remove the drive shaft in a walmart parking lot and get home with just front wheel drive.

I would have replaced the u joints when you had it apart. Maybe that thread locker you cleaned off those bolts keeps moister or water from getting into those bearings in the end of the shaft?

Good video. Didn't see if you put thread lock on the bolts when you put them back in. My only suggestion for anyone doing this is to replace the ujoints since you have everything apart and they are fairly cheap. Otherwise great video and walkthrough.

I just finished replacing the two universal joints and center bearing on my 2001 escape. When I started tourquing the bolts on the cv joint and u joint straps I could not turn the driveshaft to reposition the bolts. The front tires were on ramps, rear tires off the ground and transmision in neutral. Was the driveshaft trying to turn the front wheels?

Harry, I pulled on the top of a front shaft that was already removed from a car. Didn't know about the ball bearings. They fell out inside. I had to remove the lid, then get the ball bearings back in their cage. Ok. All back together. But how much grease should I use in the front cage?

I will never get a 4 wheel drive or rear wheel drive car again. Too many extra expensive moving parts to replace. 4 wheel drive or AWD is just a waste of money. They are used maybe 3 to 4 times a year. Maybe in the mountains of Colorado or Alaska.
