Rear end awareness - the key to complex dog tricks

This video goes over the steps of how to using LURING to train the Rear End Awareness exercise. This is an exercise that is not only good for bodily awareness, and building muscles, but also a foundation behavior for teaching some very complex tricks. The behavior can be free shaped as well, however I like to lure this behavior as I like to retain the hand signal that evolves from the luring action as the cue, to use later when teaching other behaviors that involve back foot movements. Its almost as though you magnetize the dog to line up with your hand... and I believe it is quite easy to make side stepping behaviors secondary reinforcers.
I use a clicker in this video but if you do not have one you can say "yes" in the place of a click.

I have a 5 month old 'Sheppit' he learns every trick I teach him in less than 10 reps. I think incorporating this rear end awareness will greatly expand his repertoire while keeping him mentally stimulated.

I finally got around to teaching my pup this, last night after maybe the 5th session this week, I got her to weave backwards through my legs, it's not a chain yet, but the fact that she did it is awesome!! thank you so much fr your videos!!

Ever since I taught my dog how to pivot (using your previous video as a guide) it opened up a slew of new tricks and behaviours -- just as you said. Walking backwards, awesome heel work, and loads of fun party tricks. My dog adores perch work!

Lol, the method at about 1:54...I've always wondered if that was "ok" to do...makes sense now, you can always shape back away from it. I have one dog that I think needs that method, shes gotten stuck, while the others are spinning on their books...lol I think teaching a dog they have back legs is one of THE most important/useful things you can teach.

I've watched a lot of your videos, and just found this one. I train basic obedience and trouble shoot for dogs with issues, but I need to expand my repertoire in terms of tricks as my students always love that part and ask for more. I have only done a couple sessions of rear end awareness with one of my guys before, and wanted to see it in action a few more times to improve my technique (my corgi mix will hopefully now get to the stage of not needing the book, that's our current hurdle)...Your video is the best and I know after watching I will be able to tweek how I am doing this with my crew and be better able to demonstrate for others.

I've always wondered how to train those tricks. Started with my dog as soon as I saw it and this technique is the best! He's already starting to get it after a quick 10 minute session. Thankyou so much, looking forward to watching your channel. Definately subscribing! So sick of people "teaching intermediate and complex tricks" who don't know what they're doing or won't show how to teach the basic skill in sections. Thankyou again!

This is great. I've been looking for ways to build up strength and rear-end awareness in my senior dog, and all the other suggestions I've found involved spending a lot of money to get a bunch of DVDs or equipment I'd have to send away to another country to get (TTouch DVDs, cavalettis, exercise balls, etc.) I'll have to start this with him tomorrow.

While doing this, I used a concept I learned in horse training that I guess I kind of forget dogs use. They are so good at reading our eyes and body language, that if you look at the hips, you can get the step off in the opposite direction. Don't know if you mentioned that or not in the vid. I have been training since 1995, training other folks in a bunch of aspects of police and pet dog training. Very pleasant to learn something new!!! Thanks so much for the videos!!

It's a good idea to switch the object your dog is rotating before you get rid of it altogether. For instance, use a book then once you thing your dog is good at rotating with a book, use their dog bowl upside down or a frisbee before having no book. This way the dog doesn't get caught up with any one object and is more likely to be able to do this with no object. Otherwise, great tutorial Emily!

Hi Emily! I love your videos so much, and have been using them to help teach my German Shepherd puppy, Piper, to be a happy dog :] I was wondering if you had any advice on how to teach the trick that Kiko does at 4:37 where she runs backwards and then turns around and runs back to you backwards. I've looked around for a tutorial on this trick, but I'm not sure what it's called, so I haven't had any luck. If you could make a tutorial, or know of a tutorial to teach this, I would be so grateful!

Hi Emily, I am encouraging clients to use harnesses rather than collars now because I feel they are better for preventing joint and ligament problems. I use Walkezee harnesses but difficult to size until dogs are more or less fully grown as they are expensive. I would love to know where you get the front clipping harness that the white dog is wearing as I don't like the ones that go under the front legs. thak you, I'm in the UK

Emily my dog only moves with my body he won't follow the lure with it how do i get him to do it without my help
@amywolfe1364
@amywolfe1364 6 лет назад
Teach your dog to follow the lure. Teach your dog your hand is the thing to follow by a simple chase game. Make your dog chase your hand with food in it and rewarding him for following your hand (by feeding him from your hand). Make it as exciting as possible "oooo what's this!! Come and get it, yeah, whooo whoo here puppy!!" Start off by simple straight lines up and down, then running around in circles, turning, make it fun! Once your dog is following your hand for reward, you can do what this lady does in her video. Hope that helps.
@analarson2920
@analarson2920 6 лет назад
I have tried this many ways but the best way for us right now that we have to do continuously- She steps up then I tell her butt-left and butt-right, I am facing her and I try to lure while shes tays on the dish, she moves a tiny amount and I do too and of course like Emily says click and treat, if she is lacking and struggling I change it and eventually stand next to her to have my body next to hers and bump her ever so slightly just after the command and she will move, I fade away the bump and eventually my standing next to her and eventually she gets it. Then I start from the beginning. I had to do this in very small steps on many days but she really loves to step up, so I use that to do other tricks on the dish we use, like step up, step over, step down, and touch the bowl. Eventually she loves it so much she is ready to go back to the butt-left and butt-right commands and eventually just the lure works. I do find she will forget this so we have working on other back commands like just backing up with me, by herself, at my side and in front of me. The hardest part was to not get stuck on it if the dog struggles but go back to it so we are both positive about it. The part she has not gotten is backing up around me, she has started to but she reaching a certain point and stops, we just keep working and tweaking, I am obviously not following thru with something that she is interpreting. It will get there. I remind myself at a year my pup has learned many things so this year is the year we work on details and calmness about it and eventually proofing it in many places. Our 3 rd year will have to be training on her putting all of it together when we are out and about doing serious service work and trying to proof that. Just don't give up and stay positive, that is why I love Emily's videos and those that think and train like her, patiently, positively progressive.
