PHILODENDRON SPLENDID CARE VIDEO:
• How I Grew My Philoden...
-----------------------------
In this video join me (and Joli) for a super long 2 hour plant chores video! I imported some plants recently and they've not all acclimated as planned, so some major plant rehabilitation is in order. There have been lots of plant to do's recently - repotting, watering, dusting, pruning, propagating, repotting, potting up and soooo much more. My plant chores have been getting on top slightly recently and I've been feeling a bit burnt out and overwhelmed by all my plant care. I talk about plant burnout in this video, and some of the things I do to stay motivated when it comes to caring for my houseplants. Thank you to everyone who asked questions, and I really hope you enjoy the video!

I hate leaving comments because I always feel like they come off as criticism, but you should rinse your PON in a bucket, then empty it outside. It will for sure clog the plumbing. When i rinse it in the bucket, you can see so much sediment. I heard perlite is the same but i never rinse my perlite. Also, have you looked into the Vitsjo shelving from ikea? They may be perfect in front of the windows. Your collection is a complete inspiration. I’ve learned so much from you over the years. Only halfway done with the video. Already sad that it’s almost over 😂

Definitely do not rinse pon or leca or rinse pots with bits of soil in sink and watering plants in sink soil overflows and not good!, I just paid $400.00 to have all the soil and perlite etc drilled out of my drain pipe from kitchen to other side of house where drains to septic tanks. I even use 3 layers of window screen and another plastic drain strainer in drain hole and the finest bits of silt will clog and block your plumbing lines. I now just have a strainer on 5 gal pail to water or rinse leca then I dump it outside. :)

Thank you for doing this video from someone that has a ton of plants and 2 dogs. I have been a plant lover since late 1980s/early 1990s and I had it mostly under control for some time, but then suddenly the availability of some that used to be so expensive, and the availability of things that just didn't exist for me (In Wisconsin USA), I brought so many new plants in the last 5 or 6 years... And this combined with some of my older plants being enormous has created space problems. I'm so attached to each and every one of my plants, I would hate to give even 1 up!... So I really appreciated someone fighting the same battles and trying to fix the challenges. When Ross moved in, I thought "How are they going to do this?!?" And I just love seeing how to handle things and it gives me ideas for what will work in my house. Thank you!

Thank you for the relaxing and relatable video. You always soothe my nerves with your calm demeanor and the positive spin you put on just about everything! I love watching you make decisions out loud - I find myself doing that as well. I'm struggling with display ideas and organization for over 150 plants. Not many are floor size, but most have outgrown my display stands and cover pots. I'm moving a bunch to semi-hydro too. I have to tell you that Joli just delights me! I adopted a Blue Heeler years ago and she was the best canine companion. She came with her tail docked (something I'd never do!) and boy did she wag that nub! I can see that Joli is a bit bigger and her tail is like a club. I admire that you keep her and your plants as safe as you do and that your concern is always for Joli first. This may sound odd but I feel more connected to you through your love of your sweet pooch than your plants!

Just discovered, but might be late to the party, that B&M have spinning shelf storage plates. They are clear plastic and are decent size (medium drip tray sized). They are great for props in cups that are kept in ikea cabinets. Means I no longer have to lean over plants or constantly knock plants over when watering. £4 a tray but well worth it.

I have “baby gates” that I put up when I want my dogs to stay out of an area. If you have a discounted home goods store, you can find a decorative one there… that’s where I purchased mine. My daughter’s dog tends to tail whack my plants so when she comes home for a visit, I rearrange plants. To display my plants, I have some on an entrance foyer table, some on a beautiful vintage round table my mother in law gave me and others I have on a large plant shelf my husband bought me just because a little more than a year ago. I have my large plants on top and medium to small plants in the cubbies. I put grow lights in most of the cubbies but left a couple without for my more sensitive plants. My daughter and her boyfriend just gifted me yet another plant stand and I have a vertical row light in front of it. It looks beautiful and I’m so happy to have a different spot to display somewhat bigger plants. I use whatever furniture I can utilize for plants, most are antique so I have to be careful when watering. I have a vintage credenza where I display my butterworts (pinguiculas) and droseras. I think I am going to end up buying my daughter a milsbo ikea cabinet for her birthday next month and just ship it to her boyfriends home so he can put it together for her…she’ll be moving there after she graduates from college. At the moment she displays her plants on shelves in her condo.

Your videos have brought such joy and I've learned so much! I got into plants in 2020, too, as a hobby and suddenly it exploded and I wanted everything lol and then I've had to deal with a lot of issues, and I tend to suddenly get anxious and overwhelmed easily, but it has been so helpful to see how casual you are with some planty things. I also have ADHD and plants have brought so much dopamine and joy, but I totally get the sudden overwhelm when there suddenly becomes too much! The body doubling with you has been wonderful. I LOVE LOVE that you do long videos so I can listen/watch while doing my own planty things!!!! Thank you SO much!

to convert from normal wire pole to d shape one just cut the back half of the wire off (leave the number of grids you'd use for d-shape pole) and replace with acrylic. fill in with spagnum. You can leave the front part of the wire and existing spagnum with roots intact.

🇦🇺 hi Claire 🙋🏻 Australian Cattle Dog mamma here, poor Yoli. I'm guessing she knocked something, freaked out, knocked something else, panicked and bolted? Gates/panels are certainly an option, but even those wooden shelves put end to end or L shape would probably be enough to deter her. Although my boys are usually well behaved inside I'm still not game to have plants on the floor so I've had to be creative and maybe something might be useful to you. Where my curtains hang, I've used heavy duty eyelets with rings and threaded through a thick wooden rod (25mm diameter) and then used thin stainless steel rope or diy galvanized wire hooks to hang plants in front of the window. Even larger things like planks can hang. Torn leaves? Yoga and plant with Roos used painters tape, I tore a beautiful philodendron leaf and used her trick, perfect. Painters tape on the edges of your spikey wire will stop it from catching on everything. Cutting your acetate overlap on a slight angle will make it easier to slide in (woodworking trick) Moss pole conversion : Could you just cover the back in acetate and leave the wire as is? Sorry, this became a list! I was only going to comment on Yoli but kept coming up with ideas as you went along. Glad you're feeling better, hope Ross is too have a great week

Claire, if you had a house, you'd probably fill it with plants until you ran out of room just as much. I think downsizing will be your best bet to make your space, and your collection, more manoeuvrable.

So happy that the plants an Jolie are fine after the incident! I am excited to see how your baby frydek will do! But I am not willing to give up either 😂

Thanks for this lovely long video, Claire, you really did a great job of taking on Yolis challenge! Maybe while you use those rather flimsy shelves you could put heavier pots/plants in the bottom area to stablize them and weigh them down? Or is it just me seeing more accidents waiting to happen there? Also, I hate to be a spoilsport, but I seriously believe there is nothing that will help decluttering an area as well as actually reducing the amount of things (in this case plants) in there. Best example is the silver sword. You could definitely give that pot of stumps away, particularly when you have several other plants plus some wet sticks to start over... Still, I know how hard it is to part with any plant. 🌱🤗

Hey Claire, You need to 100% downsize your collection! Get rid of anything that is not giving you joy anymore. Get the cactus’s and anything else that will survive outside on to the balcony. The rearrange looks great but you sound like your craving more space ! I’m sure Joli will also enjoy more room to move about.

58:44 with the splendid, I did a similar upgrade to a pole, I just added the plastic backing over the top. It was about the same efficiency as the D shape. Only difference is you have a narrower opening so you just keep and eye to make sure it grows straight. Otherwise, you could cut the wire, flatten it out a bit, add some more moss to the sides and plastic to the back. Not sure how that will interact with the bottom. You’ll probably also need Ross to hold the plant up. Team work 🤓 you could also use corflute instead of plastic to make it extra strong

Potential wire storage solution: next time you have an order come in make a box pocket book. Fold the box flat, tape one long end closed, then tuck your wire pieces in the other side like bills in a pocketbook.

I think blocking up the area in some way so that Joli wont try to go between the plants is a good idea. I´m sure you can do something with furniture, vases/decoration, baby gate (maybe a nice wooden one) or something else. You can be creative and screw two panels (wood, ratan, meash..) together, like a low spanish wall. I think there are also gates for infromt of a fire place that could work nice. A friend gave me 2 variegated frydek corms, one has 2 tiny all white leafs, the other one had a tiny leaf with 90% white, then one beautifully mixed leaf and now one completely white leaf. So far all of the leafs look healthy so I didn´t give up hope just jet. For now I just enjoy the beautiful white leaf and wait exited to see what´s coming next.

I think to make your bamboo shelves more stable you should weigh them down at the bottom. Maybe put some bags of soil there or use piles of books from the thrift store. Then you don’t have to worry about water dripping down from the ceiling and/or the plants onto valuable goods

I think anytime our environment stays the same for too long, energy gets stuck and it feels so much better when we’ve moved everything around and rearranged them. You’ve done brilliantly and I’ve been doing some of the same myself. Just fyi- even with a house you’ll find yourself piling all the plants where there’s is the best light. I’m still sorting out the best way to arrange them so it looks like a design choice and not clutter. Hanging plants and shelving and those suction cup shelves you suggested before are what I’ve tried so far. Glad Yoli is ok! In my house I am the one knocking things over! 😂

Hi Claire, have you considered an outdoor pop up greenhouse. Wasted prime real estate. In warm weather a couple chairs and an umbrella for extra breathing space 👫🐕. Your renting? A few holes for extra shelving to bring plants up off the floor with your high ceilings and large window. Easily patchable when you move. Place plants you want to get rid of front and center to get them moving out faster. Plant stands to vary heights and place a plant under. Have you seen acrylic clear shelving. Looks great in front of windows without casting to much shadows and darkening a room.

I like my minimalist look at home. I hate clutter and no room to move around the house. Where you have the balcony area all covered in plants and very hard to go outside and use it. I would leave the door part empty for easy access especially summer time. Also i find having plant shelves is great to have all your plants there to display and much easier to monitor them too without shifting around your plants when they’re on the floor. The tv i would have that area clear of plants and have them displayed other areas glass cabinet or plant shelves. I would put some ornaments or pictures there instead. You have plants in your kitchen too. I find no need to cover every area of the home of plants. And in bedrooms too. Arrange it in a way that you can see them. You have plants on the ceilings too. I would display them along the window instead with a wooden rod which i see other people do. My Euphoria Acrurensis when i bought it in the store was dark green but now is turning to a lighter green do you know why? I did wrapped it up and had to take 2 buses home hopefully is not the cold that caused it. Or is it got to do with the light more light dark green less light light green?
