Much of our reasoning, our intellectual modeling of the world, is done without mindfulness. It is small wonder, then, that often we don’t reason well. We expect students to learn to reason well without any awareness of the nature of reasoning, the elements of reasoning, or the criteria for assessing reasoning, without any knowledge of the logic of reasoning. Not surprisingly, our approach doesn’t work. In this tape, Richard Paul first documents common problems in student and teacher reasoning and assessment of reasoning. Then he explains some of the fundamental concepts and skills essential to good reasoning and how to teach for it.

This video was recorded almost in 1981 and here I'm watching it after almost 40 years. This is just wowing. I recommend it. It gives an idea and illustrates you through examples of either what we are missing at reasoning or what we are doing wrong. Short conclusion 43:00

Thank you for this teaching. I appreciate many of the views and issues pointed out in this teaching. I am saddened that the leading educators are missing the REAL issues that are evident in the work of their students. Why are the students not learning, listening, focusing or reasoning well? For example, the student that the education department has somehow selected as an example, student who were driven by his emotions through music, what was he expressing? Was he asking for help in his essay? He may not have answered the misguided questions by the educators BUT instead he may have presented one of the obstacles to his learning (underlying personal problem) that may also represent hidden issues of majority of people of his/her age. Are there deeper issues for the students that affect the learning and reasoning of young people, as we learnt in this teaching? I think, we need to be more flexible with people and not just look to tick boxes like robots. What is the purpose of education? Just to test and qualify or disqualify or to truly assist people through knowledge to create a better society and a world. I am grateful for the teachers and educators who are committed to help close the gap and make a change in the world through their classrooms.

Hi - Here is an idea. The "Logic of Teacher" can be added to the "Logic of Reasoning", "Logic of Student" and "Logic of Content".

:>D - ha - There is some dry humor in this lecture (that is said with a straight face ) and that I can prefer over being so serious in giving a lecture most of the time. Thanks!
