Listening and reading are effective means to learning only when done skillfully, yet most students lack basic listening and reading abilities. Therefore, educators at all levels must teach explicitly for them. In this tape, Richard Paul explains and models how to teach for excellence in listening and reading. He grounds the session in a conception of the logic of listening and reading and demonstrates how that logic can be used as a tool for listener and reader self-improvement.

3:44 what is critical thinking? 40:00 Take a paragraph and study in class. Write in your own words. 45:00 Once your get into it you learn it over and over again 46:35 There is no discipline in most classes. What is worth saying it's worth saying clearly. We have to all work at it. 47:00 We create occasions with questions that force them to decide if they are listening closely or not. 48:30 The basic way to teach reading. 1) Model reading aloud first and be in dialogue. What is the purpose of reading this? Then, Judy you take over. Then I take same passage Judy read and dialogue with it. Then groups, A B and C. A reads aloud to B and C. B and C explain how you would have dialogued. Then instructor reads that passage and hear how the instructor dialogues with it. Then I say B take over with A and C responding. What's worth reading is worth reading well. 58:00 How do you test their reading? Mark up texts. Keep reading notes. On a given page is analyzed. You had the first reading 1-35 and please turn to p. X and who has evidence of reading. Go to library if you haven't read it.

Thank you for the information. Now I would like to go deeper and understand precisely how the human race can scientifically-biologically become less ego-centric and more logical and empathetic in our thinking within three or less generations.
