I'm excited to sit down with Dr. Scott McMahon. We talk about CIRS, leptin resistance and much more. Make sure to listen to the full interview to learn more.
Scott W. McMahon, MD, of Whole World Healthcare, received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Creighton University in 1985. He completed his Medical Degree at Creighton University School of Medicine in 1989. He concluded a prestigious pediatric residency at Duke University Medical Center in 1992. He has maintained board certification and has been practicing pediatrics in Roswell, New Mexico, for 26 years. His interest in Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) began in 2009.
Dr. McMahon first learned about CIRS after being approached by a businessman whose daughter became ill while attending a local school. The search for this child’s healing led him to Dr. Richie Shoemaker, the global expert on mold illnesses. Dr. McMahon visited Dr. Shoemaker’s practice to learn about the treatment for CIRS and saw the tremendous need for more physicians prepared to treat CIRS.
We discuss the following:

Excellent interview. I value the insightful information your guest provided. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in 1996, tried strict carnivore for 5 months until I saw you interview Sally K Norton. I've added low oxylate plant foods to my diet and feel better. Sally's book Toxic Superfoods is excellent. Sally lists low oxylate foods to eat so we're gently detoxing versus the heavy oxylate dumping that can stress the organs. Some of us have to have some carbs so I prefer to choose healthy plant foods. This gives me food for thought. Thank you Judy.

I'm so convinced my nephew's problems originated with CIRS when he was a child, I wish someone like Dr. McMahon would have been available back then. I'm trying to convince my sister to have him tested for CIRS. I actually have 2 haplotypes driving my CIRS, so my sister may have both of them and passed on at least one of them.

21:58 This is inaccurate. My son was born with mold toxicity. He was missing one of his pinky toe nails at birth and I knew it was fungus. Years later I realized I passed it to him during pregnancy from living in this black molded damp place. He’d woke up crying 3-4 times every single night not skipping one night his first and a half years of life. He had sensitivity to my breast milk which caused him watery diarrhea right after eating it, same with gluten and dairy. His very first word when he was 8 months old wasn’t mom or dad but “agua” (water) for he was always very thirsty. He’d later be diagnosed with autism symptoms. All due to mold I’m 100% sure. When he was almost 4 years old I put him on this gluten-dairy-bad carbs-sugar-process-food coloring super strict diet plus away from chemical exposure and… voila!, many of his symptoms went away, like bed accidents, obsessive-compulsive aggressive behavior, and not being able to speak, among others. I’m so happy now doctors are admitting mold is a thing. I’m ready to put my son and I on a CIRS protocol because we of course are still infected and suffering from it. Please future mothers keep this in mind and make sure your environment is clean and your diet too!

Thank you Judy and Dr McMahon. I am excited to have the assurance that I need to get someone to do this protocol with me. The only Shoemaker protocol certified physicians in Canada are not in the same province. I was quoted $12,000 by one. In BC I was surprised that there is not even one in the big city of Vancouver. However I think I will find an ND to help me with some of it and then convince my NP (my primary physician) to prescribe the Cholestyramine. [She is already worried about my high cholesterol at 116 days carnivore - so might just agree] I am certain that I have had mold/biotoxin exposure and my issues started when I was 5 yr old and got worse steadily with more exposures. Carnivore helped but thanks to your other video I realized that I am one of the 22% who continue to struggle with environmental sensitivities, brain fog, & fatigue. I plan to get well, no matter the hurdles and celebrate retiring from disability when I turn 65 this September!

1:19:00 Scott was edited in the middle of a word. "___ causes elevated C4a" What is that word? The information was invaluable! ❤🙏❤ I've suffered UC for decades!!! Carnivore 99% for 5+ years, I still have diarrhea and fall sick with plant foods! And now I'm thinking mold at my wellness spa! Inflammatory markers are off the chart for the last 6+ years. High histamines. Mast Cell Degranulation Syndrome. Migraines if I eat plants. Lack of sleep. I'm getting tested and made appt at Scott's office with registered nurse practitioner. Cannot thank you enough for having the Mikhaila Peterson talking about CIRS. I started carnivore two months before she did and I've been following her since. I think CIRS has been my problem all along.

I love that he talked about the issue of poor construction versus poor building codes. If the building is actually built well and water kept out, with no wicking, holes where it should be tight, flashed correctly, buildings can be safe from mold. Poor construction will make a building unsafe, even if the building codes are "perfect". Good inspection while being built and when buying are super important.

I agree, when I found out about CIRS I had the thought that a large portion of carnivores are actually suffering from cirs. I looked to carnivore myself on my journey to find the root cause of my problems...makes total sense.

I have learned so much from Judy. I have very much enjoyed her scientific approach and her way of communication. Unfortunately, I will no longer be following her either here or on social media. The reason for this is that I did not appreciate having religious beliefs mixed in with nutritional information. I was on Facebook yesterday and was unpleasantly surprised by a religious proclamation in the Facebook Stories at the top of my Facebook feed put there by either Judy or whoever is working for her. I found it offensive. I don't want to hear about politics or religion when I'm learning about nutrition or medical information. There was no way to reach out to Judy through her website to discuss this and that's why I'm doing it here.

We all are given free will from God! Many of us are happy and find it refreshing to have God and faith intertwined with knowledge! We constantly are forced to leave God out of so much, and politely do so. If you don’t like mention of God, just ignore it and move on!? And ask why mentioning faith and God bothers you so much?! If you don’t believe, why would it bother you for others to talk about it? God bless you!

I took the vision test and didn't pass it. I would love to get better!! I think that's why I tried so many different protocols. I think my issue could be from post Lyme. I just got diagnosed in my nose with septoplasty ( deviated nasal septum) And nasal turbinate hypertrophy. The ENT doctor wants to do surgery. Wondering if it is really caused by systemic inflammation like you're talking about? Need wisdom! Thank you for this information!

Keto flu doesn’t go away- any advice/help is highly welcome! By anyone reading this :) I’m a 43 year old male living in Finland. I’m on day 16 on carnivore. Before I started, I was 4 weeks on keto (under 20grams carbs/day). So I should be well into ketosis now… My biggest challenge is lethargy/keto flu/lack of energy that just doesn’t seem to go away. Muscles feel tired and stiff, especially calves and hind thighs. No cramps though. Feel drowsy, so lethargic, and can’t really work out properly (only light walking and light excercises). Otherwise everything seems normal. I tried keto (strictly under 20g carbs/day) for 9 weeks about two years ago. It was exactly the same thing then: all else was fine, but I had to stop because I just got tired of being so lethargic in my muscles. I thougth it would go away eventually but it didn’t. Even though I used electrolytes. So I’m wondering: do some people just not ever get fat-adapted enough to go without carbs?? Some basics: I weigh 62 kg. Before this, I’ve been on low carb diet (about 100 grams carbs per day) for about two ears, with intermittent fasting (7 hour eating window) On carnivore now, I’ve been eating about 130g protein/day, at least 200g fat/day. Mostly I eat beef, eggs and lambs meet (organic and grass fed). For fat: lard and butter. Occationally liver, fish, pork and cream. Only exception to carnivore is that I use about 15-30 grams of organic, cold pressed olive oil and coconut oil daily (just because I have a lot in stock, and it helps in getting enough fat). I should get at least 2500 kalories /day, and I eat more if I’m hungry: trying to listen to my body insteaf of counting calories. I usually eat twice a day. I use 5-8 grams of salt per day (himalayan and celtic sea salt). And also daily I use about 3.6 grams potassium (piping rock pure potassium citrate) and 400mg of magnesium (my vegan 100% magnesium citrate): mix it with my filtered drinking water and drink throuhgout the day. How much electrolytes is one supposed to take?? I would not like to just supplement bigger amounts of magnesium and potassium for tha long run, because it doesn’t seem like a good idea. I would wish for my body to adapt, so I could eat carnivore without adding electrolytes eventually. Now it’s just a struggle keeping it up, because of the lethargy. One option is to slowly add back a little carbs (20-50 grams per day), through berries and root vegetables. But my desire was to try carnivore 30 days, or even 90 days, so see how my body reacts, and whether I would notice any of those health benefits that so many others seem to get, who have tried. All help is truly appreciated! Kind regards, Kristoffer
@sigawof
@sigawof Год назад
I'd drop all electrolytes except salt for a week and see how it goes. If nothing changes, I'd try eliminating all plants, i.e. no oils for another week. If nothing changes, maybe a small amount of low-toxicity carbs, just to see if it helps. If it does, you could gradually (over the span of weeks/months) reduce it. Also, consider if oxalate dumping could be playing a role in the symptoms. Re-introducing some oxalates (e.g. black tea) would help dampen the dumping and so the associated symptoms.
@caitlinoneill4479
@caitlinoneill4479 Год назад
I tried strict carnivore for 5 months until I watched Judy interview Sally K Norton, nutritionist who wrote the book Toxic Superfoods. Sally discussed oxylates and lectins. When Sally offered with the oxylate dumping I could be setting myself up for serious health issues so I ordered her book and added back low oxylate plant foods. I feel ten times better. I too was expecting different results given the number of people who do well although they don't have autoimmune as I do.

I upped my potassium and lowered my salt 8 g is alot of salt.. salt and potassium work together. Watch dr berg on potassium. If your working and cramp it's potassium cramps while rest is magnesium. I don't use salt now. I get what I need just from carnivore beef fish. Nope I do not add any salt now. Becareful what who you choose to believe. Like everything else turns into an cult. Carnivore has shown same issues especially liver organ meats. Cow only has 1 liver per 100s pounds of meat.

I second the advice to drop magnesium and potassium and up the salt. I am having 4-5 tsp of unrefined SEA SALT/day (ends up being 8+ grams sodium/day) mixed in 4 liters of water/day. This has been essential for me.
@livininslc
@livininslc Год назад
I’d lower your protein and up your fat a bit. Get some fat from avocado. Eat 1 avocado per day. You’d be getting potassium from your avocado also. Try eating some small amounts of sautéed zucchini with your meals. Like a couple tablespoons worth. Also, make sure you are taking digestive enzymes. Tudca and ox bile are essential. Only use Celtic salt not pink salt which has high amounts of plastics. Follow stephanie Keto person on YT. She gets into a lot of what can be going wrong on the carnivore and keto diets. Get it figured out fast because you can really mess yourself up. Good luck!

Lovely interview! Judy, I appreciate so much that you encourage the more effective prescription regime, but we don’t all live in places where we can get these medicines prescribed. E.g., where I live in Europe, you need a prescription from a doctor employed by the regional health system, and in this region, I’d be laughed out of the office for requesting such off-label use, especially with a note from a foreign doctor. And if I tried to get it for cholesterol, they wouldn’t be able to prescribe a non-statin without evidence that they harm my health, which would mean that I would need to go on for statins for a while and then show a side effect. 😬I think the point is made that the prescriptions are 4-5x better than other protocols, but for those of us who don’t have access to the prescriptions, what are those other protocols? Please don’t assume there’s a workaround. In some places, there just isn’t. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

Why after recovering would you get worse after a re exposure?
@NutritionwithJudy
@NutritionwithJudy Год назад
So many reasons - new exposure (maybe worse exposure), not following the proper Shoemaker protocol (e.g., taking meds too early), getting loose with lifestyle and diets, not finding other inflammatory risks, etc.
@gailivey2015
@gailivey2015 Год назад
If you stop the protocol before you turn off the gene expression that keeps the inflammation going, any new exposure will just ramp it up again. However, even if you do turn the gene off, you still have that gene that causes you to be susceptible, so if you have a bad enough exposure or long term exposure, it can turn it right back on again.
