Dude, I live in SE Texas. If I didn’t pop because of the heat, I would only pop 3 months of the year. People here buy it as fast as I can pop it, even when it’s ungodly hot. Roofers and asphalt pavers work in the heat, too, so popping during hot weather is tolerable. Two more things: We got our kettle, sifting table, tent, folding tables, popping equipment, professional sink, generator, air compressor, and lemon smasher for around $5,000. It all fits in my minivan, and we paid it off in the first three months we used it. Also, lemonade is more temperature sensitive than any popcorn. When it’s cool, it doesn’t sell at all. When it’s brutally hot, we can’t make it fast enough. On a typical day, at a good Summer event, we crank out 100 lemonades at $6 or $7 each, and 125-150 bags of kettle corn at $7 each. That’s $1600-$2000 in sales for a cost of less than $500, and one day’s work.

I used to live in East Texas, 40 miles south of Longview... I sure do miss it... but not the heat...had to come back to New Mexico... Really good people in East Texas... well all over Texas... I love Texas (even though I was born in Oklahoma City...) "Go Sooners". As I am wearing a Texas Longhorn Shirt... LOL... On your $6.00 Lemonades what size ounces is that? What size is you popcorn... and cost. Thank you for your help... Our Acting Club is going to do a fundraiser for the kids... and I have no idea how to charge for these things now... since the price of EVERYTHING has gone up... it's been 7 years since we had a fundraiser at our old school. Thank you so much for your help.

I’ve been doing it for 4 years. When you get into an event you can sometimes tell them you’re only interested if you’re the only Kettle Corn person. The hottest day I cooked was 114 degrees. If you drink a lot of water you’re usually ok.

Great information, we do spring and fall events and with 8 years only one I've known had a kettle corn stall. Nuts, corn dogs, and shaved ice dominate here. The kettle corn vender does have a steady crowd when he's there... however our heat plays a big role on turn out. This past year put the halts on everything we got new burners and griddles in December of 2019 for use in 2020 they are still in storage.

I enjoyed part 1, I'm off to part 2. I have been doing kettle Korn for 20 + years. I feel your pain on pricing. About 10 year ago after hearing exactly the complaints you referenced I finally started selling just a $5 bag. No large, no small, and when the cost of popcorn, oil and sugar went up the size of the bag went down and the price stayed the same. To little, buy more, too much put the freaking twisty back on it and have some later. :). At age 65 I sold the business with the events. The new buyer decided later she didn't want those events. Soooo I bought an entirely new set up this spring. Got the stirring arm this time and a sorting table rather than that heavy ass freaking receiver kettle. Even bought the NSF 3 deep sink and hand wash station. About $15,000 into everything. NOW. COVID strikes! I think we can safely add that crap to why not get into kettle Korn because ALL of my events have canceled. Welcome to my life ! By the way, I used a laser thermometer to check the kettle temp after dumping a batch,,,every time 535 degrees! Long live Kettle Korn!

Been cooking corn 6.5 years. You have to know how to do business. We love it and make a great living doing it. We don’t have to work during the hot season we don’t have to. This guy has no idea what he is talking about. Let me give you real numbers last event. Overhead and product was $800.00 my net was $3,100 we worked from 9:00 am to 3:00pm. My suggestion is do not get in it its more money for the rest of us lol.

This is bullshit. Hot weather we sell plenty, people bring it home. $6k is a small investment. We do small shows and had the investment paid for in 3 weekend events. Very profitable. We sell to old and young! This is the easiest biz to start. Not enough People bitch about bag size to worry about.

Thanks for responding! I'm so glad you sell a lot during hot periods. However most food vendors sales lack in hot weather. And in our 20 locations sales definitely slip when it gets above 90 degrees as far as food products go. Its great you can sell a lot of product during hot weather great for you!
