I did a deep dive into ReaTune earlier in the year, and there are some interesting things about it. The documentation I've seen seems to suggest that you choose the mode you want to use the tuner for by selecting the tabs, as a tuner, for automatic tuning, or for manual tuning. But, in my experience these are all connected. The window size, overlap, etc in the tuner window all affect how the pitch correction performs. If things aren't working for you, I recommend trying adjustments with those overlap and window settings. Window, I'm pretty sure is the section of time it looks at to determine your pitch, so just be aware that lower notes that take longer than the window time to have a full cycle won't be recognized, and you'll need a larger window. But if the window is too long higher notes the higher notes might drift within the window and I think it has to choose how much to adjust that one window, even if it has varying pitches (i think). Overlap is kind of how it sounds, take a bunch of those windows, and overlap them so the analysis kind of works from previously adjusted windows. If you keep it at 1x, you can experiment with longer window times, and you'll hear the pitch changes step around, because it's just doing 1 window at a time. You can decide what works best for you, but I've typically have run it at 8x, this will add in a bunch of latency, so it can't be used to monitor your performance or in a live situation, but doesn't cause too much of a problem in a studio setting (higher CPU use though, since it's doing 8x the work, but usually not system killing, just print it like Kenny taught if you need to). Since vocals are almost always mono, I make sure the "Stereo Correction" box is unchecked, it's probably optimized to know it's getting a mono signal and to not do the same processing on both L and R channels, but instead of bothering to figure it out, it's just easier to keep it checked off. Always use the elastique 3.3.3 Soloist algorithm as it handles formants properly to avoid chipmunking, and also use it in mono. To be honest, I've moved onto a 3rd party option, but I do think ReaTune is above the "better than nothing" threshold. I really wish the team would take some time to improve the UI with this, and add features to have dynamic settings for your manual corrections. For example letting you choose the strength, attack speed, etc for a given note you put down.

"I really wish the team would take some time to improve the UI" Exactly. That's what bothers me the most! Apart from that poor visual representation, this Utility saved me so many times, like when working on really complex material (for the film), when even the Melodyne failed (though that was about ten years ago). Thank You for the really in-depth comment. Cheers.

What I really like about ReaTune is that it's very transparent and doesn't completely remove/ruin a good vibrato, as long as you get the attack length just right. However, it also can't do drastic correction without the singer sounding like they suddenly turned into an alien or cyborg mid take. It can make a good performance sound practically perfect, but at the same time make a terrible performance sound like absolute garbage nonsense. If you learn how to get the most out of ReaTune you really don't need to spend money on Melodyne or Auto-Tune Pro. I do wish that Cockos could implement ARA2 functionality in ReaTune sometime in the future though. It would greatly speed up workflow instead of having to play through the whole take to track the pitch.

Dope dope. A lil secret is cleaning up the vocal before hitting the tune plugin. At most I gate, very small subtracive eq clean ups like hpf and removeing any ugly frequencies, and run a desser. It makes a difference in how much tunning is actually needed. But I Def can understand printing it so it's out of the way pc wise. Anyway great video I just wish all vocalist were that close. Today most aren't 😂.

Hi Kenny! First of all, your channel is absolutely fantastic, instructive, and systematic, so I have been free to use it as a primary learning source for practical classes for my university students. Second, the singer in this video is very good, and I think she really does not need any pitch correction. She's so good that even with a 0 ms time window, one can barely notice the plugin's effect. The plugin itself is relatively good, given that it is free. However, I don't like the very dark background, which makes it hard to see anything. When using it, I usually employ both the automatic and manual parts. I think they work together sequentially, although I am not totally sure of it. To me, the Elastique 3.3.3. Soloist algorithm is the best for vocals, with stereo correction disengaged. About the time window selection, I think that the more time the app has to measure the frequency, the better the precision of determining it, thus better the final tuning. (The physicists call that the "Heisenberg principle of uncertainty." 🙂) Then it takes more time to tune in, but the sliding is smoother and void of instabilities that could lead to spurious vibrato. So it is always a trade-off, and one may have to dial it in for each performance (or even use more than one setting for different parts of it). Sometimes, I use this plugin to tune the solo guitar when working with performances with bent notes. I experimented with the speed of tuning, but it should be relatively slow in any case. Believe it or not, it can enhance the level of "emotion" because one can quite subtly affect the speed of sliding into the right pitch.

Thanks Kenny for the video! I find that sometimes the pitch tracking gets “too precise” and you get many artifacts in the red line in Manual mode. I tend to fix this by changing the Window size parameter in the Tuner window to higher values. That gives a smoother line for the pitch detection, what makes the correction easier for me.

I would add one thing - if you use the reatune this way, the corrections will be relative to the track so you cannot move the vocal media item otherwise you broke the corrections. The best way for me is to drop the Reatune as FX right onto the mediaitem (you can add FX to the item) so you can move and shuffle the vocal items as you wish.

I don't get the obsession todays producers have with perfection, especially vocal perfection. I believe that the most interesting thing in music is its uniqueness as described by the sound of each singers instrument, not the bland monotony of every note being pitch perfect. And when this perfection of sound is done with digital aids it just adds to the phoniness that pervades pop music today.

I get asked about this a lot when working. I guess my answer would be this. Imagine one of the world's great female vocalists, undoubtedly a unique talent, but also reputed to be less than easy to work with and something of a diva. Anyone come to mind? I'm not sayin'! Anyway... She's just laid down the vocal to end all vocals. It's a stunning bit of music; one of the finest female singing performances in history. People in the studio have tears coursing down their cheeks; others are in stunned silence at what they've just heard. It has power, soul, dynamics, melisma... the full gamut of things that you'd perhaps expect the world's greatest female vocal to need. She looks at you and everyone around you. She's steely, determined. She's the world's leading artist; she sells millions a year, and who are you? You're some sound engineer! If you expect to continue to work in this industry at all, you damn well better say and do the right things. Now is your moment. You listen back. It's everything you hoped for, drama, emotion, power, passion -- it might be the finest take of music you've ever heard. And then -- one single, solitary, flat note. Not much -- maybe in the seventies and eighties you'd accept it. But this is the 21st century. Even without knowing it, and whether we like it or not, the listnership at large expects everything to be in tune. You keep listening, again and again, praying to the gods of your future career to "please, please... make that didn't happen..." Meanwhile, Awkward Diva Lady has already got her coat on and is air-kissing her team, thanking them in that special patronising way for being there, "mwah... mwah... oh I'm sooooo glad you could make it..." while in reality she's soaking up the glory. Are you going to be the one to say, "I'm sorry Ms ; I think we might just need to just quickly do a drop in at around 2 minutes 43....". No, you're not. Coz you like your job, you want to keep it, and you're in no way stupid enough to utter such a thing. What do you do instead? You wait for everyone to leave, you fire up ReaTune and you squeeze that naughty flat note up a few cents just as Kenny G describes. You tell no one, you keep working in the industry you love, and your client has a Grammy winning number 1. All good. The serious point I would make is you can't auto-tune charisma or talent into a vocal. You can use it as a special effect, of course, but mostly, it's a studio tool like an EQ or a Compressor. It works best when polishing the already-brilliant -- and usually they're very happy for you to do so! I see it entirely that way. And ReaTune is great for it.

Kenny, can this be used live?

I imagine latency would be an issue.

No, my computer is stacked and it still has a lot of latency if ReaTune is used live.
