This is a DIY video showing you how to do reballing on AMD R9 270X graphics cards
Why Reballing ? The graphics chip is soldered to the board with hundreds small solder balls (BGA) and one or more solder joints crack with time due to the thermal cycle which creates thermal stress (contraction and expansion en.wikipedia.o...) and the graphics card stops working, old thermal paste or paste with bad heat conductivity and clogged cooler increase the thermal stress, with this procedure we replace the solder balls and resolder the chip to the board and the graphics card works again.
I prefer reballing over reflow because reflow is not a long term solution and the black screen or artifacts will return again soon, reballing is more reliable and is the preferred GPU repair method

Hats off to you, pal, I couldn't do it. I'd spend two hours getting all those little solder balls perfectly in place only to sneeze at the last second and send them flying across the room.

Hi, I also use new BGA chips. I'm not reballing anymore. My laptops came back to me a few times. The same problem. The customer was unhappy, I had to add my time and money to it. I buy a new BGA chip and I have peace for a long time. I understand this for myself. Super movie! You can see that you have a lot of experience with this. I really liked your station and the device for making BGA. Great estimates for your idea. Maybe you could share your knowledge about buying a microscope. This is an expensive business in Poland. I mean advanced, professional. Your Cheers. Regards Pawel
@NikTelio

Hello Pawel, i never use new bga chips i always reball them :/ my reballed gtx 670 still works after 1,5 years, laptops last in worst case 1 year in most cases many years some of them even 5+ years :) , on laptops i always use copper shims instead of thermal pads(i don't like thermal pads), but you have to find the right copper shim thickness for each laptop. I also want to buy a microscope, a good professional microscope with hd camera costs about $700 but i think a cheap microscope camera $60-100 connected to a monitor will do just fine for me :) no need to invest so much money on it.

brand does not matter, all graphics card manufacturers using the same nvidia or amd chips and they solder them to the boards with BGA. gpu's create a lot of heat and this repeated thermal cycle creates thermal stress which causes the bga or the chip itself to fail, the use of leadfree solder for manufacturing the chips and soldering them to the board is also a factor
@spidermcgavenport8767
@spidermcgavenport8767 6 лет назад
Nik Telio I noticed that when you added the lead solder balls, and was removing the lead free solder, which seems too be an inferior product.
@NikTelio
@NikTelio 6 лет назад
the solder is normally 37% Lead and 63% Tin but lead was banned and now they use other materials to replace lead and the mechanical properties are not the same, leadfree solder does not like thermal stress much :)
@spidermcgavenport8767
@spidermcgavenport8767 6 лет назад
Nik Telio understandably so, now with this being said, I can't imagine what would happen if you were to submerge a lead free vs lead gpu in mineral oil too see if any difference in longevity, would 3M Novec react differently same scenario. Peltier cooling traditional gpu solder vs yours. Just curious is all.

I have a 980 ti that was gifted t o me. I sent my Tower to a friend who provided some parts including the 980ti. he shipped the system back with the card in the PCIe slot and no support. when i pulled it from the box i instantly noticed the sag. due to shipping and no support the PCIe slot had broken completely away from the board on half it's connections. the guy sent a replacement Mo Bo and after install the Video card had red and green lines accross the screen. the card worked fine when he installed it and the OS. I believe the solder joints got damaged when the weight of the video card sagged on the Mo Bo during shipping. In my quest to figure out if I could fix the card, I've stumbled accross Reballing. and obviously your channel.

I love your videos, and I have 2 very layman questions, if you could. 1. Is the stencil different for every gpu? 2. Is this possible do be done with a heat gun, without a station?
@NikTelio
@NikTelio 4 года назад
Hello, each bga chip needs its own stencil but sometimes same series gpu chips, for example gtx670 and gtx680 will probably have the same bga and you can use the same stencil. Reballing needs uniform temperatures throughout the pcb (as much as possible), a bga station is required to do this procedure successfully. You should start experimenting with reflow because you can do it by using only a heat gun and some flux, watch this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FU84qGSdE-s.html watch also this video before you do any rework procedure ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qfuBX3RJbcc.html

Hello, if your grapchics card has two 6 pin power connectors then you must connect both, if your power supply has only one 6 pin connector then use an adapter, usually 4 pin connector for hdd or dvd to 6 pin gpu connector like this one: www.dropbox.com/s/covjfn3inmnijxm/365698713_430.jpg?dl=0

Have you tried just heating up chip to 120-140c and not reballing because the soldering is probable not the problem.
@NikTelio
@NikTelio 6 лет назад
when after reballing the gpu works for years then probably the soldering is the problem, with an xray machine and bga scope you can find out if the bga is problematic or the chip, but none of us have these tools and we go ahead and reball the gpu without knowing the problem, that is why many say that reballing does not work, if there are bga cracks then reballing will fix the problem
@JOKOT01
@JOKOT01 6 лет назад
Yeah the equipment to check if solder is bad is really expensive so might aswell reball if you think that might be the problem. Great videos btw, just ordered parts for my own DIY BGA rework station :)

Hi, why the soldering profile is linear from begin to the end? There should be soaking phase around 160 degrees for around 60 seconds...
@NikTelio
@NikTelio 6 лет назад
Hello, dark infrared rework stations can't keep up with the profile that you mean because the panels are heating up slowly, i also read that some studies has shown that with linear profile the solder flows better, take a look at those two profiles from Amtech and Kester they r lineal. www.dropbox.com/sh/zfhm21536fnlcp2/AACy9OTA3nLsgIaZHI9HdM84a?dl=0

Whether the upper and lower heater are controlled by techFX or bottom heater has separate control? I`m interested because I`m going to build my own rework station and I`m gathering information. At the moment I have Jovy RE-7500 but it`s too weak for rework bigger motherboards.
@NikTelio

both heaters r controlled by techfx but i have also instaled a max temp. thermostat on the bottom heater . ( with big bottom heater you will have better results with your BGA repairs )
@wt761
@wt761 6 лет назад
No, I`m not going to upgrade my station because it doesn`t have PID algorithm to control heaters and it`s easy to miss peak temperature. I am considering buying techFX controller or Controleo3 to control upper heater and REX C-100 to control bottom one.
@uN1Qu3DZ
@uN1Qu3DZ 6 лет назад
I would spend the time upgrading the Jovy to higher powered bottom plates, the top heater is very nice on it. You can buy PID controllers on ebay if the stock control board is not satisfactory.

Hi, I have a r9 270 that suddenly stopped working, I uninstalled drivers because I thought the update was causing the black screen, but whenever I try to install GPU drivers my pc freezes, and when I'm using it with no drivers it shows artifacts. Is it due to solder cracking?

@NikTelio
@NikTelio 6 лет назад
Hello,most common problem with graphics cards is BGA cracks caused by thermal stress, this GPU gives a black screen.
@uN1Qu3DZ
@uN1Qu3DZ 6 лет назад
Most common problem is actually bad chips, you will find out soon enough. I have been doing this for 6 years and have learned along the way that replacing the BGA chips with new ones is the only way to ensure trouble-free operation for at least as long as the machine lasted from new to its initial failure. However, i can fully understand this is not economical in many cases. I have some reballed GPUs and motherboards in use myself. After reballing, if you can keep the temperature of the GPU under 60 deg C, it should last a long time. It is easier to keep a desktop card cool than a laptop, thus repairs on desktop cards tend to hold up better in the long term.

Saludos

Thank you, repair shops ask a lot of money for this kind of repair and only if you have an expensive graphics card you consider the repair, for the durability is hard to say because it depends on technicians experience, my repairs last in worst case about 6 months, in most cases 1-2 years, for laptops much longer. Manufacturers use the same materials to build electronics and the don't build them to last a lifetime...they have to sell new products ;) And about the environment I think it will have its "revenge" on us, no one seems to care about it.

@NikTelio 6 лет назад
Hi ,i don't think that this is a ram problem, with a faulty ram the graphics card in most cases works and windows recognize the graphics card and you can install the drivers but you will see random artifacts appear when watching videos or playing games. I think in this case the chip is faulty or it needs reballing, you can try to reflow the gpu by just using a heatgun and then make a test again to see if you can install the driver.

@NikTelio
@NikTelio 6 лет назад
i don't think the hot air station is powerful enough to reflow this big chip, a 2000 watt heatgun will do, and you will need a temperature meter like this one ( www.ebay.com/itm/TM902C-Digital-LCD-Thermometer-Temperature-Reader-Meter-Sensor-K-Type-Probe-MF/182287896491?hash=item2a71348fab:g:szwAAOSw4shX4YWn ) to monitor the chip temp, you have to reach ~240°C in 5-6 minutes and then let it cool down, put a drop of thermal paste on the chip and place the temp sensor there then use the heatgun and keep it ~15cm above the chip and always moving in a circular motion and slowly get closer and closer to rise the temp to 240 within 5 minutes, if you have flux use it for the reflow it will help. yes you can email me if you like.
