Reballing Toshiba Satellite C660D with DIY BGA rework station and low cost equipment, as you see in the video the cooler is clogged with dust resulting in overheating which damaged the graphics chip, the laptop powers on but the screen remains black,
To repair this problem i will reball the graphics chip, this repair usually lasts many years, in some cases the chip itself is problematic and needs to be replaced.
Why Reballing ? The chip is soldered to the motherboard with many small solder balls (BGA) and one ore more solder joints crack with time due to the thermal cycle which creates thermal stress (contraction and expansion en.wikipedia.o...) and the laptop stops working, old thermal paste-pad or paste-pad with bad heat conductivity and clogged cooler increase the thermal stress, with this procedure we replace the solder balls and resolder the chip to the motherboard and the laptop works again.

Can a i5 can be upgraded to an i7 on a toshiba satellite? Thanks that fan was seriously clogged! I subbed, & agree with some other commentors, your work is top notch! The CPU on that board is a PGA.

Hello, i do not think that the i7 has the same socket as the i5 and even if they had the same socket, the bios would probably not support it.

@@NikTelio thanks for the reply. I thought that if the socket & chipset could support other (same family) CPUs, that even one up from, say, the i5 to i7, could be done. As far as the same solder ball pattern, that I am not sure of. Thanks 🤓

I like your videos. Thank you. This time you go til 215 degrees. In your other videos you goes til 200°c. Why you get higher with your temps?

Hello, the leaded temp profile can go up to 205-225°C peak temp, i modified the profile just to be sure that my temp is not too low because the temp sensor receives heat from the infrared panel and always shows a little higher temp, about ~5°C

what's the benefit of using liquid Rosin flux ? I couldn't find liquid Rosin in my local stores so i tried mixing solid rosin with alcohol, it works but it leaves a sticky residue on on the board and it's kind of hard to clean

Hello, it indeed leaves a sticky residue buy you can remove it very easy if you start cleaning it while the board is still a little warm, if you use some IPA you will see that it dissolves the residue very easy, liquid rosin has no other additives inside and leaves the pads shiny. if you look at my other reballing videos you will see just by spraying IPA on the pads the residue disappears.

Could you share what cpu paste you are using, and do you make those cooper shims yourself, or buy them somewhere? I would very much agree thermal pads are the root of all evil in laptops!

on chips without a heatspreader like the one in the video i always use Ceramique 2 made by Arctic Silver, copper shims i buy on ebay, from 0.1mm up to 1mm because each laptop needs a specific thickness.

i have a toshiba satellite L500, when o turn it on a toshiba logo will appear but have a vertical/horizontal lines in it then hangs, you think it needs reballing?

it sounds like graphics problem, i think reballing or reflow would help

connect the laptop to an external pc display and if the lines also appear on the display then the gpu is the problem

there's also instances that i can boot it upto windows but freezes then it'll show random solid color (e.g pink, green etc) then sometimes it do have a water-like flowing on it then a buzzz sounds

the problem could also be the cable that connects the motherboard with the lcd,, as i said just connect the laptop to an external display and you will find out if the lcd or cable or the gpu is problematic

Hello, even if the bga is the same on both gpu chips, the bios will not support the new gpu

@@MrBenz1821 beside the bios there may be hardware issues, like the power regulators for the gpu and other components probably will not be compatible to supply the new power hungry gpu

Hello, building the machine is not the hard part, doing a successful reballing is the hard part :) i can't build you a machine but there are some cheap bga rework machines that you can buy like IR6000 and IR6500
