Absolutely, Peter loved Rebecca. I don't see how it is not blatantly obvious. It's not obscure, vague, or minimized. He even asked her what's the one thing, no, the only thing that would keep him from her. Yes, it would be death. Besides, he didn't just try to save himself. He tried to save them both. His plan was always to run away with Rebecca to America. How does he not love her? It took the actor, Oliver, to announce, no, confirm, Peter's love for Rebecca. Peter and Rebecca had a sealed connection...so rare.

He loved her. He just couldn’t keep them together after his death and all his attempts to reunite failed. I don’t agree that they were Bonnie and Clyde nor that they had a wrong kind of love. More they were two people cut from the same clothe who found each other but never had a chance.

I think because they were in the forbidden room and messing around with her clothes..her spirit was very possessive...hence the theme of possession. The energy was coming from Viola who had cursed the house. I wonder if Peter had never rummaged through her things in the forbidden room if things would have turned out differently. But I doubt it...Viola's spirit was not about to allow anyone to freely and openly love in her presence, e.g., the Gardner and the Cook's unrequited romance and the closeted Lesbian and the forbidden affair...sad but true.
