Welcome back to Reborn with Me!
Today, we are painting realistic veins on our reborn doll so she looks even more lifelike.
Quick Tips for Veining:
1. Veining is Staining - make sure you have at least a base coat on your doll before painting the veins.
2. Think Gradients not Lines - broad, faint veins look better than dark thin veins.
3. Keep it Squiggly - squiggly lines look more lifelike than straight lines
4. Trees have branches - paint veins that branch off of one another for the most realistic look.

Veining note: i am right handed.. . And i have to concentrate hard to not make too perfect of defined lines ... so i fixed this by usng my left hand to do veins and it helps me do more natural squiggly lines . (Because i'm right handed and using left hand i'm less corrdinated which does really help me).. so.. judt thought i'd share what quick lil tip worked for me, with veining technique.

Another brush that can be used to create veins would be a rigger brush. This is a fine brush with long soft bristles. Easier to get squiggly lines because you are forced to have less control by the longer bristles. It places your hand further back from the point at which the bristles touch the vinyl. Use a light touch as well and it can help create those nice fine lines you need for veining.

Oh god I love you! Thank you so much, Kim! Your one out of very little artists that share they're techniques. For some reason, the big time artists won't give out information on how to even do the simple basic stuff. Like, how can someone learn when no one shares techniques? We're supposed to be a community. But again, thank you Kim, I'll definetly look into your other videos. I also love how your so descriptive of your work, keep moving girl! 😃😃

Your work is amazing, Kim! I'm an oil painter--classical fine art--and your techniques and observations about skin are incredible. It's almost as though you are taking a Rubens and bringing it to life in a painted sculpture. I am in awe of your ability. Thank you so much for sharing with the world, 🙂 Marsha Rhodes Gilliam

Great tutorial! I am struggling with painting veins myself. I use air dry. The part I'm struggling with is getting the shape right. My lines tend to look straight or if I try to draw a squiggly line, it looks more zig zagged or wavy.

That's the best realistic part of a reborn doll is to see the veins underneath the hair, because I have a reborn doll and it has veins underneath the hair. oh, and by the way my doll is a boy.

Dear Kim, if I am doing painted hair is it mandatory that I still bein on the head of would it do just with the temples, a bit in the forehead, and back of the neck? I'm not too into the huge vein look unless I have seen babies with it.

Hi Azelyn, Like I mentioned on the other video, you don't have to do any step you don't like. What fun is painting veins if you don't like how they look? You can just place them where you want them or skip them altogether. I once had a custom order from a lady who did not like the look of veins, so I did Blue Shading instead: customdollbaby.com/reborn-doll-artist-tips/reborn-with-me-part-6-blue-shading But if you did a Vein Blue mottling layer, you don't have to bother with blue shading either. It's your baby and you're the artist. How you paint is up to you. :)

Can anyone help? I can't get vein blue, what blue do I get?
@jsolnushko
@jsolnushko 8 лет назад
Hello Kim, First of all thank you for these videos! I have a question though, do you prefer mottling layer first and then draw veins or what do you recommend? I am reborning as we speak and I feel like I kind of lost my veins under mottling layer skin layer.. Should they be may be darker? Now I am thinking should I add more veins at all or they will look weird over mottling... As well I have a hard tine finding the right consistency of the paint for mottling layer.. its either too light or too dark. I also cant find the right pattern for applying the mottling. I picked the wedge but its just doesn't look as good as yours lol and when I use sea sponge its just "eats" my paint and I don't get much on the skin. Also I would love you forever if you tell me where can I buy premixed colors for veining, shading, blushing, and so on.. Or where can I get the recipe.. I am willing to buy do you have it in your store? or where can I get them pretty please :) Have a great day!
@suyung58
@suyung58 5 лет назад
I finds the same thing, veins get hidden under mottling so I apply veins after 1st coat of mottling but under final 2.. If the paint is to thin they don't show up and paint just runs, Veins on side of babys heads are more prominent as well. This tutorial was very helpful as exactly where to apply the veins.

Hi Kim. I was wondering if I do another light layer of veins, would I have to do another complexion layer? and if I don't, will it look weird
@Customdollbabycom
@Customdollbabycom 7 лет назад
You'll have to be the judge of whether it looks weird, LOL! Typically you want the veins to look like they are "under the skin," and an easy way to achieve that is to paint complexion layers over it. If you just have a few veins that you want to touch up or make darker, another thin layer of veining probably won't discount the "under the skin" look as long as you can see through it. I've done blue and green shading on top of my complexion layers just in spots where I really wanted the color to pop, so there's nothing wrong with adding more veins on top of complexion.

That's really up to you. Different artists do it differently, but in this post I provide some guidelines and rules of thumb to help you decide when to put the kit in the oven and when to keep painting: customdollbaby.com/reborn-doll-artist-tips/when-to-bake-your-reborn-doll

Starter kits are great. I started with one. In my experience they don't contain absolutely everything you need ( like solvents and primary colors). But it's much better than starting with a massive shopping list. Good luck getting started!
