Reborn with Me! Resin for Perfect Baby Tears

Welcome back to another episode of Reborn with Me!
Today we're wrapping up the finishing touches on our Realborn Asher Awake by sealing the eyes and adding perfect baby tears.
I'm excited to share my baby tears process because I'm one of the few (if not the only) reborn artist who uses Jewelers Grade Resin to make my tears and seal the eyes.
Resin is essentially two liquids that when mixed together become a hard, crystal clear plastic-like substance. I use resin because:
- it creates a permanent, durable and waterproof seal on the eyes
- it is crystal clear
- it makes acrylic eyes sparkle like glass!
However, nothing is without caveats. You may not want to use resin because:
- it's a process: typically 30-40 minutes from when you mix it to when you can stop messing with it and do something else
- you have to be precise - if you do not mix the exact ratio of part a to part b, it will not cure properly
- you always have to mix more of the material than you need. I resolve this by making jewelry with the rest. But if you're not ready to add cute resin charms to your life, you may want to stick to the "old-fashioned" way of making baby tears.
I tried a few different resins and came to the conclusion that the best resin for reborn dolls is Little Windows Brilliant Resin. www.little-windows.com/collect... a small set is only $8 and will provide tears for a lot of dolls.
If you choose to shop your own resin, please keep in mind:
- Air Bubbles - air bubbles will ruin your piece. Some resins are more prone to trap air than others. For example, Ice Resin is very thick and picks up a lot of air when you mix it. You can still use it for tears, but make sure you pop any and all bubbles that show up in your eyes.
- Heat - many resins release heat when they cure. Some release enough heat to melt your eyes and the vinyl! Test your resin thoroughly to make sure it remains cool during the curing process
- Pot-life - some resins cure faster than others. The shorter your working time, the faster you have to create your tears.

I did it and the eyes look so gorgeous. I also put a tad of resin in the nose holes, on the lips and nails. It's very pretty but took about 2 days to fully dry. Thank you for the tutorial. You are amazing! (PS I did sort of over do it with a doll with tiny eyes but it's not as bad so I would recommend going very tiny amounts at a time)

Hi,So glad you have made this video,I have had to scrape some baby tear stuff off most of my dolls as it all went cloudy and horrible! It looked great when I first applied it,And I was shocked a few months later when I saw what a mess it looked.I will look for some similar resin that you used,And hopefully have better luck!Thankyou.

hi Kim, I was wondering and sorry if I missed it in the video, what happens if I make a mistake or don't like how the resin cured on the eye? am I stuck with it forever or is there a way to clean the resin off the eyes and vinyl without ruining the eyes or vinyl?

Resin is permanent to my knowledge. :( Did it cure in a different color or did it pool in a way you didn't expect? Within the first hour, it usually takes on the shape that its going to cure in. But once it's sticky, you can't get it out.

The only way to remove resin is by sanding with a very fine sand paper and then putting a another light coat or trying to buff (polish) it back to a clear finish... probably not a good idea for this project. Lol

has anyone ever used oval eyes instead of round ones? also in some kits the iris of the eye looks so big that it seems that the eye is covered by the iris and the white part of the eyes isnt showing as much how to fix this getting a smaller set of eyes?

Has the resin been tested over time? Does it stay clear? There have been a lot of questions on BB Forum about using Aleenes Paper Glaze. Some people have had it turn cloudy over time. If resin overcomes this problem, then I'm all for using it even if it is more time consuming.

+Helen Marshall That is an excellent question! Epoxy resin has high clarity and long durability BUT it is sensitive to UV light. So if you baby is sun-bathing, the resin will start to turn yellow. In my Doll Care Guide that I send home with the babies, I caution against sun exposure as it can bleach color and cause all kinds of other issues over time. But that is one thing that you have to be cautious of working in resin. I found another brand of resin that contains a UV inhibitor. I'm planning to test that one out next and see how it goes. Helen Marshall Thanks! I should also mention that "amberization" (yellowing) is thickness dependent. So in thin layers, like we use for the eyes, it will be very difficult to notice, if at all. Have fun experimenting! I have another brand I want to test too, so I'll be sure to report back! :)
