Oh and one more thing I just found out about that my kids have been enjoying making are quilted hearts for the "I found a quilted heart" project. They are just scrappy hearts that they can just go to town sewing and sew as many as they like. If you do a google search you can find out more about what they are for. I've done actual sewing projects with my kids before but this is probably the thing they have enjoyed the most so far because it requires the most just raw creativity and they don't have to focus on instructions. They can finish one in a few minutes and then pick more scraps and sew a completely different one. Plus it teaches them to be giving without the expectation of reward or recognition.

I agree with B+. I would make the projects. I had a bunch of flannel squares left over and my granddaughter had a blast making a simple throw sized quilt with them. Good practice for straight lines and allowed her creativity as she could choose from the pile and arrange them how she liked. She’s a bit younger than your Grand but she worked at it all day and we had a blast together.

Good morning! I learned to sew at 10 years old. I was making doll clothes. The girls and I discussed it, and we think you should ask if she has a project in mind. If not, we suggest a tote bag for her to keep her crochet supplies in or a zipper pouch. Those are good beginner projects with immediate gratification that she can use. As for the box, we give it a B. We like the wildflower quilt. It's different. There are 3 projects with most of what you need for them, and I like the way they are all organized in bags. The table runner and thread catcher aren't necessarily my taste, but the value is there for the price. Definitely a B.

How fun to have a sewing day with your grandchild! Pajama bottoms can be fun entry point. Love the idea of a zipper pouch! Stitches can be unpicked and you'll be there helping

My youngest son's favorite kind of day is when it is stormy and grey and oogie all day. Which, is good sewing weather. I like a nice sunshiny spring or fall day that isn't too hot, so I can run. I think a zipper pouch is a great idea for a 13 yo. The Iuka guild does a kids can sew day every year and we make rag quilts with them. Which is an achievable quilt for a kid. Have fun sewing with your granddaughter! I would give that box an A.

Simple tote bag - easy to customize; if she's comfortable, add patch pockets to the lining; later customize with decorative stitches. A zipper pouch or tote is something she can use right away to carry/store her crochet/craft supplies!

Your hair looks so pretty today! For your granddaughter I would talk to her and see what kinds of things she wants to make. She might be thinking garment sewing. Most people don't understand that quilting, bag making, and garment sewing are all separate hobbies. I would pick the project based on what she wants to dive into. Quilting: A small quilt, walling hanging, place mats, pot holders, ext. Bag making: A pencil pouch or wristlet. Something she can use. Garment sewing: A simple skirt. (Violette Field Thread is a pattern company with some gorgeous and mostly easy to sew clothing patterns).

Like others have said, I'd do a tote bag so she'll have a way to carry her art/craft supplies. You could do an inside zipper pocket as an easy intro to zippers. Have fun! That's so cool she wants to sew!

I really liked this box. I enjoy getting projects in these boxes. It's a great break from working on quilts. The price is reasonable. I give this box an "A". I'll bet she can handle the zipper just fine. I think a couple smaller projects (tote bag, apron, zipper pouch, table runner for her bureau) to start so she has the satisfaction of finishing a couple things is best for starting. How fun, enjoy the time.

I liked this box, good variety. B You could start with an unlined zipper pouch, to get over the zipper installation, then add the lining in the next pouch. My very first project was a skirt with an elastic waist. Pajama pants are pretty fast and easy as well.

I love, love, love the lap quilt. Wildflowers are definitely my jam. A- from me.

I would wait on buttonholes and zippers until your granddaughter has a couple of projects successfully completed and is ready for more challenging skill-building items. Consider starting off with a simple project related to her other interests, such as a tote bag or drawstring bag she could use for her yarn-related projects, or a simple apron if she likes to cook. If she is more into clothing construction, check out the Simplicity learn-to-sew patterns (they have a very easy elastic waist skirt that is perfect for a beginner). It would be great if she could pick out her own fabric (maybe a fabric store field trip would be a good start, or shop your stash?)

Box- A-, Achieveable projects with the fabric included. These projects seem great for all level of sewists and can be made quickly. I'm shaving off a couple of points as the fabrics are scrap size if the fabrics weren't preferred. Nice box and good value overall.

Holly : "Mother Nature knows what she's doing." ME: Mother Nature is going through "The change!"" LOL I hope you and your granddaughter have fun sewing- and my thought is perhaps a tote bag that she can use. It can be scaled up and down with pockets, etc. As far as your thought of a zipper pouch- it's perfect!

If not a zipper pouch, which I think is a great idea, could be a little drawstring bag or (one with elastic instead and handles) or a cute tote bag with a front slip pocket. All sorts of possibilities! I think something that she can use and show off to her friends would be best.

I started my granddaughter off with a pillow case then we moved on to pajama bottoms. I don't think I would start with a zipper bag first until you can access how she is will sewing straight lines. Smaller peices and zippers can be challenging even to adults but once she gets the hang of it just see what she wants to make. Loved this box would give it a B.

This box was awesome. The flower garden pattern, really good. The rainbow table runner,,,WOW! Colors beautiful. Project - don't have a clue. Ask her. Colors, what she has in mind. NO ZIPPR. After I knew how to sew, notebook paper. Straight lines. Pillow with bunny or egg. Sewing on embilshments ,buttons ,Cottontails, basics. Finish in a day. I had to borrow a barbie doll to learn to sew her clothes.lol I hated dolls. Unless rgey were furry pets or baby doll. Soft squishy dolls

Hi Holly, I would start her with a tote bag. It’s how I got started and it’s immediately usable, I was so proud of mine! Lol! I think a zipper pouch to go with it would be fabulous! I think the box was an A box too, though I don’t like any of the fabrics!😂😂. I’m so picky!

I would start her with a draw string tote bag. That is one of the first projects 4-H have for the younger girls. Zippers might be to much for a first project. Also our state does quilting project and the first year is making a rail fence project in a lap size quilt. I like the box. This is one of the first projects that i have seen that I like them. I would give it a B.

The reason home ec classes start with pillow cases or simple 5" patch pillows is for the student to learn the fundamentals..fabric prep, pressing , measuring, sewing machine mechanics, how to sew a straight line.. let her learn and become strong in the fundamentals and then u can move onto the 'fun projects'

Rebs Fab Stash is always overflowing with loot. It's organized well and appears to be a good value. However, it is not a box I would subscribe to. It feels dated, and projects are not my jam. Grade B. My 3rd child, he is 12, is starting to sew in school. He has done a little sewing at home with me. He has the interest to do more. We have made 2 small cat pillows. He has made a stuffed animal, and they are starting an apron at school. My kids all did aprons and have made animals. Girls love bags, so good thought and reasoning!! A tie blanket is always fun too. No it's not sewing but it's quality time. Keep us posted! Happy Thursday ❤️

Pretty good box, lots of projects and patterns, but not my cup of tea style wise. B+ for me. As to Granddaughter project, while zippers aren't hard, it might be a little intimidating for a first outing. How about a basic tote bag she can keep her yarn and stuff in? Maybe with a strap long enough to wear over her shoulder or cross body?

I have not taught anyone to sew. I would start with the basics. How to thread the machine, how to install the bobbin. How to change the needle. What tools and equipment are used and how. Then I would have her just practice lines on scrap fabric. When she is ready to start a project, start with something easy. Ask her what she would like to make. It will help build up her confidence. If she is looking for lessons, maybe she has something in mind.

You didn't mention if she had used a sewing machine or not before. A 9 patch potholder for baking, a themed pillow for reading, a tote bag to carry projects, a snap pouch to carry inside her tote. The snap is using a metal carpenters retractable measurement tape. Then a zipper pouch. By the time she does all the projects she should be comfortable with a sewing machine to tackle the zipper. You will have to let all of us know what she made. This could be an on going activity for both of you. Who knows maybe a quilt one day. Have a great day with your granddaughter.
