I've had this little engine in my collection for 15-20 years. I purchased it before I knew Lionel made DC engines in cheap starter sets. Since this engine had a cracked gear I never got a chance to run it.

Nice work, Jeremy. I think it goes to show a couple of things: it's often more difficult to work on low-cost engines due to the use of plastic/nylon on the gears and frames, and with patience and perseverance working on these little guys can be rewarding!

Thanks Brad. Wait until you see the LASER train set video that I have scheduled 2 weeks from now. Same engine (switcher) but a different motor/gear design that works so much better.

Sometimes the best projects are the smallest ones. Like others have said, it was a fun project. Congrats on getting her running Jeremy.

Thank you. It was rewarding to get something running that I never thought would run again.

Awesome job Jeremy! Soon as you said it was DC I said put a bridge rectifier in it and you did. It works!😊

Thanks! The home built bridge rectifier works great.

What a nice little fix. Makes you feel good knowing that something you saved all these years and were able to get up a running again is a good sense of accomplishment. Excellent job Jeremy! If you build an actual small yard with switches and unloading accessories to move cars around, that little engine would be perfect for that! 😃 Tom

Nice! Split gears are the worst! It's really nice to have suppliers willing to keep parts for stuff like this available. I found a gear on ebay for one of my Lionel HO steamers. The later versions switched to brass gears.

I wish it ran better. In 2 weeks the video for the LASER train will release. It has the same shell and frame but a different motor arrangement that while cheaper - works much, much better.

Yeah, I learned the hard way one time about allowing oil to find its way into the commutator, because not knowing better as a kid, I sprayed WD40 into a bunch of my Athearn locomitives thinking to lube them. Expensive lesson I learned by the late 80s when I found myself replacing most of my locomotive motors. I've since found the benefits of the wonderful Labelle products, used sparingly.

I have a similar story - learned about excess lube issues with slot cars lol.

I was surprised with how easily that gear went on the shaft. I was expecting the replacement to crack

I wonder if it could be representative of a Plymouth MDT type switcher, like they move cars around with around industrial facilities, where radii is not wide enough for a regular locomotive...

The cracked gear problem is a problem with many trains. I have a Lionel big diesel, in this one with two motors they used a plastic second gear from the worm gear of the motor, that gear cracked on the one motor wheel set, part not available from Lionel. Also it will require a complete break down of all of the motor truck parts to get to it. I have a Atlas little 2 rail o gauge switcher from the 1980's same problem, cracked gear, not sure if I can get parts for that one. I have found a good work around for the cracked motor gear on the Kusan and Williams little diesel using and metal 10 tooth gear used in RC model cars. I have a Weaver nice all wheel drive double diesel set, cracked gears on the wheel axles. I am now pretty sure the problem with this era of Weaver is no so much the plastic chain drive, but that they had no flywheels on their worm drive motors, and these gears on the axles cracked due to the stress or just age. Then the chain breaks due to the strain. I carefully melted the Weaver gears and got it going but it was not as smooth as it should be.

So true! Nice job getting the Weaver going.

@@TooManyHobbiesJeremy Ironically about a year later someone posted a set of those wheels with those gear on Ebay. I bought the batch. A few of them had the cracks as well. But before that I had bought another none running Weaver engine of the same type and era and took it apart for the wheels/gears and improved my double engine set a lot. Even then some of those were cracked as well, and I did not use them but it was sad because that engine was one with the improved flywheel motor, but I had a double PA engine set so having one with a fly wheel and one without would cause more issues. So I had an idea to get that Santa Fe working but using a motor system from another company. Then I found a deal for a complete frame and motors and trucks that was from a K-line F-3. That was a bust as well because when it came someone had removed the main secondary gear set that goes between the wheels and the center motor worm gear. A few months later I found a set made by Lionel and bought them but the outer gear was to many teeth and would not work unless modified a lot. Later a set of real K-line gears came up on E-bay and I was able to about count the teeth knowing what I had was too big I bought these and they were the right ones and worked well. I have not finished that project due to a grand house floor repair project in my kitchen. Then I decided after doing that to make the kitchen into a long train room on the one side. You will see that set up on my channel

Very creative ! A couple of questions: Size of diodes? : Dis you hook up lights on AC side or DC side?; Is there a voltage increase on the DC side of the diodes? Thanks I used hot glue to put bulbs in the Lionel 600 but will try the shrink tubing method next.
@TooManyHobbiesJeremy
@TooManyHobbiesJeremy 6 месяцев назад
Thank you. The diodes I picked were just ones I had lying around - 2A 400v. I would have rather used a small diode bridge for neatness. The incandescent bulbs are wired on the AC side so not to increase the load on the diodes. The voltage decreases on the output (DC side) of the diodes but it isn't very much at all. As long as hot glue is working for you - no need to change it. I'm sure it was way quicker than my method.
