Ugh.. cheap plastic parts that break if you sneeze wrong, but require lots of effort to remove them.

Said it before this vid got DMCA'd, I'll say it again now: Reusing head bolts is a cardinal sin in the combustion palace that is a piston engine. Like, ask anyone who rebuilds engines, that's something you simply don't do. Never reuse head bolts. The temptation to save money is great, but you'll lose out in the long run because hey "surprise" (totally not a surprise) now within 1000 miles your engine needs head gaskets again.... because the head bolts couldn't keep the head gasket sealed. Not joking, they lose over half their strength when you reuse them. Yes it's that bad, no I'm not exaggerating. It might be even weaker than that, actually.

Crossing all the fingers that the engine is going to be good for another few years. How is the engine holding up so far, half a year after this video went up? I am not trying to be nitpicky at all. An engine rebuild takes patience and by the looks of it you did a good job overall. You skipped a few steps that I would absolutely have taken, such as replacing the bolts on both cylinder heads. If they are stretch bolts, they are supposed to be replaced once you loosened them because they have lowered strength when reused. Sure, that is potentially another expensive item on the list. No idea what Subaru charges, but places like Mercedes will charge you a fortune, at least one kidney and your first born for a full set, depending on the model. You might get lucky at McMaster though. Either way, replacing them would probably be cheaper in the long run because if those reused bolts fail, you're risking having to do a complete teardown again. If you're lucky. I know there are conflicting schools of thought here, and a lot of mechanics might say "Nah, don't worry - it's gonna be fine". I prefer to err on the side of caution here. If I was to put that much effort into rebuilding an engine, I would replace all the things I can, especially in places that I cannot easily get to once the engine is in. Once the engine is apart, it is easy to replace a bunch of parts while you're at it. And it's an absolute royal pain in the ass to have to do it all over again because some reused part all the way inside the engine gives out after 200 miles that would have cost just a few bucks to replace. Edit: Never mind - I just saw another comment about the headbolts and that you consulted a Subaru tech about this. Still: How's the car holding up?

Okay, one, how many days did it take you to actually re-assemble that. And 2, that is the easiest timing I've ever witnessed. Granted, the last engine I worked on was 30-some years ago, but, dang. "Don't touch anything." That's an understatement of a lifetime. Touch. "Oh fuck. gotta do it again." Give me an old ford engine any day, Holy Fuck subaru's are complicated. FYI (no, I didn't read further comments) When you pour oil (or from any other container shaped like that) the flat side of the container goes on the top - this helps keep it from going "glug glug" and possibly splashing. Anyway, final result? That's YOUR baby.

At 21:34 it says to turn the intake camshaft, and NOT to turn the exhaust camshaft because it could possibly bend the valves due to lifting at the same time, but you do anyway. How did you know it would not bend the valve?
