Rebuilding a Ducati Bevel-Drive Crankshaft - Back to Classics
In this episode of Back to Classics Harm is rebuilding the crankshaft of the 1979 Ducati 900 Mike Hailwood Replica. This time he is going to take you along the whole proces thats coming along with this job.
Rebuilding a crankshaft is a very precise job to perform, with measurements taken within one thousands of a millimeter! And finally by hitting it with a heavy copper hammer!

Back in the early 1980s, I was racing 100cc single cylinder karts, I had a very experienced engine tuner rebuild my engines to an extremely high standard. The technique he used to assemble the crankshaft, was exactly the same as shown here. It is good to know that even after all this time, the craft is still alive.

Jeff Bratton used to build the crank on my BOTT Duck. He did all the cranks for top racers. We made crank pins that were .0005" larger to press in crank tighter on Jeff's recommendation. Also hollowed out pin quite a bit as material was always being removed from pin side in crank for balanced, so that made job easier.

Jeff did my crankshaft for my 900ss back in 1979. I ran the bike for year without problem. Sold the bike to a friend of mine and he ran it for years without any problems. At that time he was doing the crankshafts for Kenny Robert's TZ's.

OMG.. I want ALL of my motorcycle crankshafts rebuilt/balanced now.. they are like the core and heart of an engine - and the better they are "healthy" and "happier" - the better the end-result for the health and longevity of the engine. Mad props guys. This channel is SO GOOD !! [FWIW] [I] posted up on a FB group of "Ducati Bevel" in hopes of getting others to subscribe and appreciate how amazing this channel is.. Hope the subscriber count climbs soon.. and rapidly.. this s#it is AMAZING to me !!

A Ducati engineer in Australia retro fits plain big end bearings (as in mille) too earlier roller bearing Ducati engines. I am currently getting an engine built a round case with Darmer desmodromic heads and barrels. So a desmo 900 round case with an alternator in each side with a view to fuel injection. I learned this technique many years ago at college, great to see a master put it to practice. Just wondering what assembly paste was used for crank pin to web interference fit was used? Looked like graphite or molybdenum?

Correct, we use Molykote BR2 graphite paste for this.

0.02 mm between the conrod and the crankpin is too tight according to Veetwo. Not enough room for the oil.

We always look for a clearance between 0,020mm minimum and 0,030mm maximum.
