This week we do a repair on an old school, made-in-the-US-of-A hand tool from SK Hand Tools / Professional Tools , the 3/8 in. Drive Reversible Ratchet - Model 45170. We got this ratchet minus the guts from a generous acquaintance and managed to find a rebuild kit to help us get it back in action. That's a good thing because these are well-made and of a quality you don't find much nowadays.

I have this same ratchet, and was going to take it apart and clean & re grease it this weekend, but kinda procrastinated on it.

I know the feeling I had bigger dreams than what done as well. These are great ratchets let me know if the clean up and re-grease made a difference when you get to it.

@@TalkingHandsTools I did it about 3 months ago. It was easy, and the internal parts showed no wear. I used Brake-Kleen to degrease the old crud - then blew it out with compressed air. I did not use the super lube since I had some Lucas Red & Tacky. The ratchet sounds nice & quiet. Backdrag is fine. Good for many more years

Thanks for this video I have my late father's S-k same ratchet you are rebuilding I am going to be do that same to me it's more really sentimental thing cuz he used it to work on cars along with a Snap-On tools is sk's where his secondary tools

That is awesome and I completely understand and the SK seems like a great primary or backup. These are pretty robust ratchets. The one I rebuilt in the video has been working flawlessly since. I think you'll be super happy with the results. Follow up and let know how it goes for you.

Great video on rebuilding a classic round-head S&K ratchet. Where did you find that vintage rebuild kit? I want to keep my older S&K original as the new renewal kit has the black anvil and not the chrome/silver anvil.

I lucked out when I searched Ebay for the rebuild kits part number someone had an older version listed. I would say keep checking on there ones bound to appear.

Nice looking ratchet, but probably not as old as mine. Mine is unchromed. I need to clean and lube it, but I don’t think chromed parts would look right in it.

I can't say I've seen an unchromed version. It might work, you could compare diameters and see if they match. If not you might be able to find the parts you need, I've been surprised occasionally what is still available.

Removing a complete ratcheting assembly and replacing it with another completely new assembly via a single retaining clip is not a "rebuild".

If you handed a ratchet like this to any tool truck and asked to have it rebuilt, what we did in this video would be the result. In the context of the tool and what its internals are as well as the availability of parts, this is indeed a rebuild for this particular product.
