Rebuilding idler wheels off tracked tractor

In this video I rebuild and repair idler wheels from a Trax master tracked tractor.
The idler wheels had run out of oil and had destroyed the bearings and also the shaft that holds the wheel on. The customer had managed to find some new wheels but unfortunately, they were the wrong overall diameter, they were unable to find the ones the right diameter so a repair was needed on the old wheels.
After knocking the old bearings out, it turns out the centre bores weren’t too badly damaged. One side of one of the wheels had damaged where the circlip groove was but the other was okay.
The damaged wheel was put in the 4 jaw chuck in the lathe and over bored, it was then rebuilt back up with weld and the circlip groove was re cut.
The wheels could then be rebuilt with the new parts out of the wheels that were too small, luckily the parts were interchangeable with a bit of modifying to the shafts.
My new Siegmund 8.7 extreme system 28, 3 x 1.5m fixture table also arrived this week so that was unpacked and put together. Already came in useful for these wheels.
Hope you enjoyed the video

Oliver, I think your new table will be a great asset to your shop. I am 81 yrs. old and worked around machinery and equipment many years here in West Texas, but I learn a lot watching you work. You are a very skilled young man and great to watch.

Nice table! Never put yourself down, you don't do yourself justice it would have been a brave person to take that job on in the 1st place. Can't understand why people don't take the time to check their equipment, it saves a whole lot of money and time. Kurtis over at CEE also hates it when he gets parts that are dirty, I don't think customers realise that, you spending the time cleaning all adds to how much the job costs. 👍

Crazy, but true. I learned that sometimes it's less money to run machine into the ground then it is to interrupt production. Not always and it's case by case at best,,,,,and every time I had to call the shot on it it broke heart to see a good machine destroyed and laid up for weeks, that could have been running like new for months, if we could take it off line for 8 hours.

A well earned new table. Excellent repair on the wheels. Running large work reminded me of family members turning prop shafts for ships and my victorian great uncle who consulted on the original Forth Bridge; he was a naval architect/engineer. You were almost salivating with that welding/fabrication table. Well done. Good bit of kit that has already shown its worth. Next time the farmer will clean it after today you have charged him extra (lots extra) for having to work in manure covered work. If you don't charge extra they will just keep bringing unclean stuff to you. Or like Kurtis at Cutting Edge Engineering he just won't accept it. or will charge full machining price for the cleaning - and who can blame him. Keep up the good work. If the customer baulks at the non-perfect O ring seat, they can go elsewhere, at elsewhere's high prices and slower turn around times.

Another piece of kit returned to service. If the lack of maintenance like we saw on this kit is common in your area, then you should have enough work to keep you gainfully employed for years to come. I've no idea if the imported idler would have held up in the small tracked tractor, but another option for future consideration would be to plasma cut out a thick wide ring for welding onto the imported idler to increase its diameter and width to match the failed idler wheels. Just an idea off the top of my head, no real idea if it would work :) Love your videos...

For your cir-clip removal. Take an old socket or peice of pipe for that matter, that's about 1/2 as small as the hole. Weld one end of the clip to the end of the socket. Heat the rest to remove the temper, then roll the clip up like an old sardine tin to remove.

I have always wondered why so many fitters I have worked with don't know about welding the inside of a bearing race to get them out. In the end, if they didn't fall out, I'd just weld them straight away. It really was the only way to get a bearing out of a blind hole, until I bought a full set of SKF bearing pulling and installation tools for the workshop.
@snowballengineering
@snowballengineering 2 месяца назад
I didn’t think it was necessary because they were knocking out easy enough plus it would have been difficult to get in to weld.

Regarding bearings, it is very rare that they are specifically intended for oil lubrication. The difference is the application they are in. Oil baths are usually for high-speed bearings, greased bearings usually work up to a couple of thousand revolutions. The bearing capacity for slow applications is usually better with grease.
