Life transitions can be very destabilising for our language learning and other habits & productivity. Even without a big life change, our habits are constantly changing as we go through life and I think it's really helpful to take a step back and re-evaluate from time to time. Today, after moving back across the world to the U.K. and going through lots of life changes, I'm starting the process of rebuilding all of my language learning habits and rituals as I work towards a new, productive routine.

Thank you for this timely video Robin. For the last 7 years I've been struggling to get out of the grips of the grief of losing my husband. My whole creative life came to an abrupt halt and I found I could neither go backward or forward, I had lost all desire. Slowly over time, I started with the things that brought me joy and allowed me some peace, that was languages. Now, I'm at the point where I don't feel as shackled by grief as I once did and am ready to reclaim my creative life. This video has helped me to turn the proverbial corner and gave me some great ideas on how to work in all the things I want to return to. Good luck to you on this journey.

Congratulations. I'm from Manchester (which is also awesome) but have good friends in Bristol and visit a couple of times a year. It's a very cool city, with a great vibe. Lots to see, lots to do, great parks and outdoor spaces easily accessible, big emphasis on independent businesses. Hope you'll be very happy there!

I like the idea - I've tried planning out new routines and have always found it hard to stick to a highly scheduled new routine. I think it is definitely better to just have a rough sketch at the beginning, at least until it becomes a habit. Good luck in Bristol!

Thank you Ewan! So far, so good and I'm really enjoying the city. I'm glad you like the idea from the video, too. I'm looking forward to giving some updates on how things are evolving, it's taken a little time but I'm very happy with the rhythm I'm starting to settle into now.

I really like the fact that you’re trying new things out !! We were born to evolve so we need to get used to changes and trying new ways to do things to see what works best for each of us, sometimes we miss a lot of good things and amazing opportunities cause we don’t want to leave our comfort zone but sometimes it is necessary!! Thank you Robin! I've been following your channel for awhile now and always appreciate your content. I am embarking on learning Dutch as my partner and I are moving to The Netherlands in August, and I've found myself overwhelmed by the move logistics to the point where I haven't really been making the proper time to study Dutch, but this reminded me that we're all human and it's good to be gentle with yourself and your language learning while keeping your eye on the prize. Great content as always, Robin! I have the summer off until I start my masters in late September, so I'm planning on hammering French (minimum 5 hours per day) to boost my level from B2 to near C1. Always glad to see a video pop up in my feed! I'm a few days into a break right now. I feel guilty, but I think I'm too burnt out and have been feeling like that for a few weeks now. It would help if I had some fun, modern materials to engage with in a more casual way, but I just can't force myself through more Caesar or Bonaventure at the moment. I love that stuff (well, maybe not Caesar), but it demands too much focus and energy.

I'm not a super organized person when it comes to planners but you broke this down so simply I'm curious to try something again. I keep getting planners and ditching them yet I just digitally tracked 3 months of an intensive language program successfully (Fi3M) using one of their digital journals and now I want to do the same thing tracking my days in Notion. I am looking forward to seeing your progress w this system as you move forward. .

Got a little worried at first when I didn't see the coffee. 😂 I really need to do this. I have so much I need/want to do and am just THE most unorganized person, I usually get about 5% done and then wonder why it's night time already. 😫 This really needs to change, so I reckon this video may be a kick in the pants from the universe.

I honestly love doing this. Regular evaluation of your schedule keeps you honest and fresh about how you spend your time! Then the planning part is fun as well but then usually I tend to fall off on the execution side 😂 Great video Robin! Awesome as always! 😎

I totally agree! I think regularly re-evaluating the state of our habits/routine/schedule is such a healthy practice since these things are always in flux in one way or another and this is a nice way to sort of bump things back to the centre. Haha the execution side is definitely where things get interesting 😂 Thank you! It's so good to be back. Now I can't wait for lots more videos really diving back into the nitty-gritty of language learning 😄 I do love habit & lifestyle videos, too, so it'll be fun to do more of those. Especially when I have a better filming set up again!

love the videos, just wondering about language maintance. How many minutes a day with a podcast or video in the target language a day is sufficient to hold the language.B2 or c1 level.

Thanks for your sharing! Can you talk about intonation in a language. I have done lots of shadowing but my intonation doesnt sound like native speakers, especially my spanish. I can speak clearly and everyone can understand me well. My pronunciation is good but i dont sound like natives. Moreover, can you give me/us tips about speaking a foreign language in front of camera:)) i just forget everything when i just start to speak, although i scripted already. @@RobinMacPhersonFilms I've had it for my whole life, so it's fairly frustrating. Since I don't have too many responsibilities I'm doing pretty decently at language learning. I have a very simple language learning routine, so my irregular hours don't cause as many issues.

I honestly think that learning Mandarin Chinese can become a massive waste of time, and it is unrealistic to think one can learn it and be proficient unless is pouring thousands of hours. I did it and I wish I put those hours into improving my other languages, like Japanese which was already taking many hours on itself. So many times we get greedy in language learning, I know, but yeah, sometimes one has to say enough is enough.
