Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today we’re going to be discussing (once again) the recently announced HBO Harry Potter TV Series!
VERY BRIEF update for those unaware- Warner Bros. Discovery made headlines all around the world last week when they confirmed plans for a new Harry Potter series.
"Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and beloved films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally."
But- as I discussed in my PREVIOUS video on the topic - ‘Recasting Harry Potter for HBO Max - Philosopher’s Stone) - I can’t help but wonder about casting. With such big shoes to fill, casting for this series must be a bit hectic.
That’s why today I’m going to be picking up where I left off in the last video and casting for the SECOND installment of the Harry Potter series- the Chamber of Secrets.
Like I mentioned last time, I want to see fresh faces for all of the ch*ild actors, so I’ll be sticking to strictly some of the main ADULT characters introduced in the second book.
Let’s dive in to it.

Please consider my comment . I haven't seen anyone suggest this yet but I feel I have a good idea for who could play dumbeldore. In the books dumbeldore is less aggressive he has more of a smirky happy cheerful vibe specifically in the first couple of books. And on top of that one detail that stuck in my mind was that dumbeldore had a crooked nose. And then it hit me . Stephen fry would be amazing as dumbeldore . He has that amazing voice can portray dumboldores cheery personality and as a side point. Dumbeldore was gay or at least bi hence his being in love with grindelwald . Stephen fry is gay. Please let me know your opinion on this . I love your videos and your opinions are very interesting to me

Do you think using Harry's invisibility cloak to walk through the veil would effect the outcome? (prevent death while allowing actual travel to place/land/dimension of the dead) In The Deathly Hallows it mentions the invisibility cloak hid Ignotus Peverell from Death until he was ready to go and then he took off the cloak and greeted Death like an old friend. I feel that's a way of saying it hid him from deaths effect while going through the veil.

My pick for Lockheart in the HBO show would be Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, the actor who played Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones. He has both the looks and acting chops and is able to bring an air of egotism and narcissism to the role.

As much as I want. Love this, I think part of us is going to entirely recognize him too much, but I know him and there was another actor who said they would be absolutely happy to do a small background cameo just for the fans and to be included in the new part. There's some characters and actors from the original who truly do want to be in it but not dominantly involved in any way, shape or form

My first pick for McGonagall is absolutely Michelle Gomez. She has the zest and the tenacity needed for her. When I think recasting McGonagall, I’m thinking about the possibility of the scene we were denied of her duel with Umbridge and I don’t see that acting ferocity ability to duel, carry the presence of a leader and also balance the tenderness beneath that exterior like Michelle Gomez would be able to carry out.

Ewan McGregor is an interesting one cause I feel there’s quite a few roles he could do in the series due to his very underrated acting range. Lockhart and Lupin are the ones that jump out to me the most. Only hurdle about lupin could be the age as he is I think 52 or so while lupin is meant to be like mid 30’s. I guess that would depend on how old the other marauders actors will be when casted.

I would save Taren Edgerton for Lupin, especially if Adam Driver gets cast as Snape. Both actors would fit the ages of the characters in the books.

With Ewan McGregor, I still feel he can "look young" or at least like 10 years younger. But also remember Lupins character, yes he's in his thirties but remember a big part of his character is that "his years" hasn't been very kind to him so I wouldn't mind having an actor who may look a bit older. I feel Ewan McGregor may be perfect for that role, just purely thinking of his portrayal of Obi-Wan, where he's able to be a great "father figure" or a great mentor.

@@gravewalker2452 Yes, the way he portrayed Obi-Wan is just what I had in mind. I feel like he would be amazing in the scenes where Lupin and Harry are having their talks. David Thewlis portrayed an incredible character and especially in those scenes 😌

The issue you’re running in to is that you’re “casting” too old, these adult characters are supposed to be in their early to mid thirties … the movies cast older but i think the TV show could benefit from casting age accurate characters

I would like to see Michael Fassbender as Lucius Malfoy. He plays villains very well. He played Magneto in X-men to perfection so I would love to see him play Lucius

The advantage the casting team have this time is the know every story arch for each character. When they cast the for the first films they only had the first four books to go off. So, some of the characters, in my opinion, didn’t work out in the later films. For example, the actor who played Ginny Weasley didn’t feel like the same character later on in the books.

I feel sorry for the employees who have to do the recasting of everyone. Because recasting for a Harry Potter cast 2.0. Is probably one of the hardest tasks ever. Due to how attached culture/ fans are to the movie cast.

Matthew Rhys as Snape. Watching him as Perry Mason; he has a dark, brooding nature that would be great in that role. And Rhys Ifans as Lupin.

All actors mentioned by you are an intristing choices and it would be fun to see them on screan, but there is one thing I'm hoping HBO will consider...for the actors to be as closed in age to their caracters as possible..as it's suppose to be a 10 years series people will grow older right before our eyes, so it would be sad to see Snape's generation older over a decade (minimum) then they are in the books again...don't get me wrong, Alan Rickman is a Snape for life...but let's be honest - he could have played Snape's father from the start...and there were also Harry's parents, where on the photographs they supposed to be in their early 20s not 30s...that would also shown the tragedy how young they all were when Voldemort was vanquished by Harry...and not much older then golden trio while on the hunt for horcruxes...this is one of the things it would be nice if HBO could fix in next adaptation...but you know, I'm just thinkig aloud ;)

Michelle Fairley as Professor McGonagall. The same actress who was Katlan Stark from Game of thrones. Mark Addy as Hagrid(Robert Barathian game of thrones) I've seen him in other roles and he has both the looks and range to be Hagrid. The same actress who played lysa Tully(game of thrones) for Petunia Dursley. Phyllis Logan (Mrs Hughes from downtown Abby) as Madam Pomfrey. Natalie Dormer as Narcissa Malfoy. Eva Green as Bellatrix Lestrange. Lesley Nicole (Mrs Patmore Downton Abbey) as Mrs.Weasley.

The case of Petunia is not exactly about envy, it's more about being treated as a third class daughter by her own parents, who neglected her for being a "boring normie". As a counter reaction, she embraced normality and despised anything different. This is a never resolved trauma of her past. As for being jealous, she wanted to go to Hogwarts because, like any child, she thought that being accepted would make her more special to mum and dad.

This is one of the more likely cast predictions I’ve seen: more English actors. With JKR as producer I feel like that will be crucial. Actors ages have to be taken into consideration as well as the project will be a long commitment… which it was here so well done! You keep saying you don't know why you are picking these actors or how they are perfect to play these parts but you are trying to match the appearance of the previous actors vs match the actual description of the characters... I'd rather hear who you think would be best according to the book descriptions as in alot of cases, they are actually quite different. Especially in age. But I'd really love it to be as book accurate as they claim it's gonna be.

So the man has that range.

In my mind the perfect choice for Tom Riddle will always be Gaspard Ulliel 😅Sadly he passed away not long ago, though… I can imagine Hero Fiennes for this part, too. He already played Tom Riddle as a boy in Halfblood Prince and has this chaotic air around him. He reminds me a bit of Hayden Christensen (Star Wars, Anakin Skywalker). I hope for Tilda Swinton and Ewan McGregor. But I see Tilda Swinton rather in the role of Trelawney.

I would like to see Matt Smith as Malfoy, Hugh Bonneville as Dumbledore the one I agree with is Olivia Colman the rest are too old for the parts if you are going by the ages in the books. Can I add Will Poulter as Lockhart he is the right age and has great comic timing

Damian Lewis could be a great pick for the new series. He's a brilliant actor, but rarely gets mentioned in casting videos. Although a touch too old, I was thinking he would make a good Lucius... It would be touching too as his late wife, Helen McCrory, played Narcissa.

Wanna know something ironic? When we were kids, my sister thought that Lockhart _was played by Ewan McGreggor._ When we watched the movie, she pointed at him and said, "It's Obi-Wan!" It wasn't until we rewatched Wild Wild West and realized that Loveless was played by Ken Branaugh that she realized she was wrong about Lockhart.

No no no! Ian McNeice was _born_ to play Slughorn (although he may not live long enough to fulfill that role, God forbid) He fits the book description to a T; in fact, he was originally tapped to play Slughorn in the movies, but was, I believe, filming Doc Martin at the time (as Bert Large) and turned it down.

Tilda Swinton would be great for Trelawny, come to think of it. I feel like the Dursley's should be unknowns and the star power should be saved for the professors to really make them feel established and powerful when they show up, which is kind of how teachers feel when you're in school.

I think my first choice for Lockhart is John Barrowman- he could really hit the campy narcissist angle, and also the dark edge of being ready to wipe the boys' memories. Barrowman might be a little old, but he actually looks younger than he is, and I think he'd be perfect.

My only issue with teenage Tom Riddle casting as they got it perfect for the chamber of secrets movie but in the half blood prince he looked like he could pull off Randell the Weasel from the cartoon Recess. He’s supposed to be tall, dark, handsome and pale. All four was for The chamber of secrets, only two for the half blood prince.

I think these were great choices and a lot of these roles will be a tough selecting process for sure. The fan base that has built over the years have these images in our heads and will need some convincing for sure. Overall I'm personally excited to see what HBO does with the Wizarding World.

I definitely think the casting should be kept to UK actors. I don't know if I wanna sit through one of the actors from here in America, trying to force themselves to try and have a British accent. Also, I think Vernon and Petunia are supposed to be younger than they're portrayed in the movies. Like born in the late 50's to early 60's so they'd be in their 30's when the present day story takes place, which is in the 90's.

Channing Tatum is who comes to my mind immediately for Lockhart… if he could pull off a British accent For Nostalgia, Tom Felton would be incredible as Lucius Malfoy! For Young Tom Riddle, I could see an actual Tom…. Tom Holland. He has the British accent already, and even though he’s in his 20’s now, he could still pull off late teens easily. For Professor McGonagall, nobody could ever match Maggie Smith, and I have zero suggestions. For the Dursleys…. Aunt Petunia to me, Tilda Swinton is perfect, so we agree there. And Uncle Vernon could be Hugh Laurie. His “House” character shows he can portray being a jerk. He doesn’t necessarily have to be fat lol

Considering some of the main actors/actresses are basically againsr J.K. because they think she's a bigot, I hope none of them make an appearance in the reboot. Got a lot of nerve when she made them famous and hasn't done anything wrong in the first place.

Just my take on this. But I believe Lucius Malfoy would be fantastic if played by Jamie Campbell Bower. In stranger things, he portrays Vecna who is a very twisted individual. He also has experience with the franchise through Fantastic Beasts. Let me know what you think :)

I've no problem mixing the HP world's! Hoping Felton is cast as Lucious. As i understand, Swinton turned down the role based on her unhappy boarding school experiences.
