Recent burning of St Michan's Church of Ireland 

Man charged over fire leading to destruction of ‘irreplaceable’ mummies at St Michan’s Church - "Gardaí arrested Mr Topiter, who has used various addresses and had a Romanian travel card, and he was detained at a north Dublin station overnight".

The man who destroyed those mummies has form for setting fire to historical buildings. He done the same thing up in Belfast in 2018. When the police eventually found him he was in a detention centre in Glasgow awaiting deportation, the reason for this deportation order is unknown. He was sentenced to 22 months in prison, with the second half out on licence and was supposed to be deported when that time was up. Instead he ended up down here living off the Irish tax payer and destroying irreplaceable ancient artefacts. He managed to evade deportation twice. If either of those orders had been carried out this travesty would never have happened. It’s absolutely sickening.

Canada has had over 100 churches damaged. Many completely. People feel it's the aboriginals. I don't feel the same. A certain ideology possibly. 😮

This man Cristian Stefan Topiter, was Romanian migrant with convictions for theft and causing £300,000 worth of damage due to arson of building in Belfast .

😮I remember visiting the crypt as a child in the late seventies. My mum took me travelling all over Ireland for six weeks from England - she studied at Trinity and was catching up with her Irish friends. I remember the mummies vividly and I still have some postcards from there.

I'm devastated to hear about St Michans crypt. Years ago we went to Dublin to see St Michans mummies, they were well worth a visit. Its just so sad, heritage seems to be being eroded. And I think thats terrible. And as for those complete numpties at Stonehenge - they needed spraying with the paint. Im referring to the old chap, who is well old enough to know better and the rabid boy/girl person. Disgraceful.

Much as this type of ghastly vandalism is to be abhorred, many would argue that the touristic exhibition of corpses is equally irreverent and ghoulishly inapt. Think on it, this is the resting place of earthly remains. The Catholic church places more emphasis on 'sacred places' and the concept of localised holiness than some other denominations. One might then assume that the lurid exhibition of earthly remains for tourists and funding would be deemed ... well, distasteful and unholy? Today in many European countries, it is no longer considered ethical to expose Egyptian mummies to the public gaze for example. The perpetrator here will be castigated for desecrating tombs. But is this prurient sideshow exhibition not equally tasteless and profane? Think about it. Not long ago, an Anglican cathedral in England held a gamers' conference in a cathedral with many skulls in their crypt because it 'fitted with the mediaeval ambience' of the fantasy game. There's not a lot to choose between a pyromaniac and a ghoul is there?

While the event is very sad for sure, why isn’t it macabre to a culture for its Church to make its money by showing tourists the bodies of their dead?
