This Summer Flounder (Fluke) fishing trip has convinced me that aggressively recharging Gulp baits with Gulp juice will increase your catch. There's a link to the recharge juice below. Any cheap plastic jar that seals well makes a good recharge reservoir.

John do you ever do what I call the caveman technique on fish? Basically I snap the neck, which opens the Gill artery, then I pull back the head until the spine breaks. It’s quick, it’s clean, and it’s humane. I would highly recommend it for thinner and floppier fish like mackerel or blues. I’ve had many blues swim off with their necks slit because I didn’t kill them before I bled them in the water
@johnq.public2621

As for bleeding the fish, you can use the Ikejime method as well for even better results.

John, have you tried using Power Pro Maxcuatro braid? 20# with the diameter of 4#? Shaves 1oz. off the bucktail weight needed to keep it down compared to standard 20# test. Every bit helps. Big fan!

I'm right handed yet use a left handed conventional.. To me my power is in my right hand for hook sets not left.. It seems very strange to me that guys say this yet use a spinning rod the "right" way setting the hook with their right hand..... Ultimately what matters is being comfortable... I laugh when I see fresh water guys pitching and flipping their jigs out only to move the rod to the opposite hand once the cast is complete.. LOL To each their own. I Have been hearing that right handers are starting to make a switch though... Good vid as always Skinner..

Have you considered taking a couple Zman and soaking them in the gulp juice for a couple of weeks then trying them out again? It would be pretty interesting to see if it's the scent or maybe the action/profile/material they seem to key in on.

Hey john, yesterday I caught my first keeper on a sandbar. I was walking back to the bait with the fish and wanted to just throw it into the livewell. It wasn’t my boat so I had to rinse the fish off which is of course a bad idea. As soon as that fish hit the water it squirmed out of my hands and darted away. No fried fluke for dinner yesterday. 🙁

John love the videos, watch them all the time. How do you handle a drift where the surface speed is optimal but the current below is blazing. 3-5oz are scoping out like crazy and it seems like you need a cinderblock to hold bottom. Try moving? Drop down and deal with the scoping with quick resets?
@jonathanhof3834

so you use about 5oz of jigs for 40ft of water? how do you maintain bottom with that if you have a strong drift? do you have use chicken rigs?

This video was shot in 70-90', not 40'. We generally use 3 to 4 ounces in 70-90'. Sometimes we go as heavy as 6. We do this by using no thicker than 15# braid. If you're using heavier line, or mono, that's why you need more weight.

Have you ever used the Berkley gulp alive recharge liquid, or do you prefer the juice that comes in the large containers? I agree tremendously that recharging it works! When dropping it straight from dipping it in the juice I tend to get fish much faster and in more quantity then just using the same gulp over and over without giving it that scent.

Hahahha your rationale for not using a left hand retrieve is not very well thought out John. You can set the hook with a second hand under the rod using a left hand reel just as easy as a right hand retrieve reel. The notion of having to set the hook using only one hand just because the reel handle is a lefty is shortsighted. The difference being once the hook is set, you have to release your right hand off the body of the reel and onto the handle, but if it was a left hand retrieve you don’t have to let go of the reel, just the spot you added your hand to set the hook. .
@Sam-bu8dj
@Sam-bu8dj 4 года назад
I’m on team LH reel. I definitely understand Johns logic though. Coming from bass fishing I like to have my strongest arm controlling the rod at all times so thats why I go for the lefties.
@MichaelP0418
@MichaelP0418 4 года назад
Feel like with either hand..... you shouldn't let off with the other hand while burying the hook. I use a RH baitcaster and use the left hand to hold the rod tip up while setting the hook, then retrieve with the right hand and keep tension on the fish. Can work with way though - just more of a preference thing
