I've been following your channel for a long while. I live in northern Mexico and I am so tired of concrete houses and the idea of earthbag homes are amazing to me. I'm trying to convince my boyfriend to build a house like these. :)

Just watched this whole series and I've seen several other episodes too. I really like how your family works together so much and the intelligence that permeates--- your parents must be exceptional to have fostered such a wonderful subculture/ environment... when hearing your dad speak I am especially happy to think of how many renaissance men are out there who teach and create from scratch! I'm in my first year of being off-grid and very much appreciate what you guys are doing. I wonder how many people do these things without posting to the world? Must be at least 10 to 1.... I've used your rocket mass heater videos to help explain and motivate family. I'm currently halfway through my own.

mylittlehomestead I'm going to test it tonight or tomorrow. the barrel is leveled and attached at the bottom except where I shimmed it. I'm using cement on outside coatings, because I ran out of energy to do cob and was unsure of my finish cobbing skills and also because we were concerned about dust and crumbling from cob... anyhow I have lots of clay, sand and rocks on the inside from my property. I'm thinking of using pretty rocks from the property to decorate the outside too. After this batch of cement is dried I will take out my shims out and do the last few bottom barrel gaps. I'm using a barrel lid and lid clamp on the top for easy access and cleaning. Another thing is I built on a wood subfloor and against a "normal" wall, so I made bottom and wall-side layers of cinder blocks, left open, and bottles, and roof flashing all in places I don't want heat to build up much...

Reciprocal roofs are beautiful and efficient but they are designed to send the roof loads to a ring beam at the top of the wall. Your structure does not appear to have this ring beam. Without this critical element all the forces are stressed at the tiny connection at the center. There is probably a way to retrofit a ring beam into your construction by introducing a compression band on the top course of bags. This is similar to yurt construction but would need to be beefed up substantially, perhaps 3/16" stainless cable, two course. I want you guys to have long term success.

Bryson said that Gary was going to measure everything out on the computer and tell them what to cut. How much of the time is the computer spot on and how much is measurement and cut on the fly? You all seem to love angles, so I am thinking it's not one simple cut most of the time. Also Shelly, very good comment about plastics in landfills. Most of that is made to break down under UV but once buried their is no UV and very little aerobic or even anaerobic decomposition of the plastics. Great job educating!

this thing is so far out of square its unsafe. should have wrapped every 4 or 6 bags high with steel bands every 8 or 10 linear feet. that way you could have used the comealong to square up the wall as you built it. also should have set 8x8 pylons on the exterior to help keep the walls from expanding outwards, and have a brace for them to tie to.

I'm sure it will be fine but the buttress may have been a better more natural. Solution In keeping with your presenting a tutorial so to speak. Or even doubling the wall to that level. As a matter of safe practice . I do love your over all plans a great family adventure !

i have to tell you that your construction is totally unsafe. there s nothing to prevent the Roof moving outwards when all the load attacks ; only the Connections of the Center wooden ring, a few nails, nothing more. by the time your Roof will Crash down, sorry to say this
