You may find that the hole location causes a split out at the bottom of the joist. The bottom of the timber is under tension so ideally the hole would be half way between the top and bottom. Where the tension and compression is neutral.

Gary, great job stepping away after the third failure.... Sometimes its needed. I will say however I don't think we get to see a lot of frustration on the clips. Everyone gets along very well. I can say from my own home projects sometimes a hammer will fly or some curse words will be uttered. Great to see you guys do so well. You inspire me to keep trying and do better.

Hello there. Watching your channel is a breath of fresh air for me. I love seeing how your family interacts with the daily issues of providing a good off-grid homestead. I'm fascinated in all things off-grid, permaculture and eco-building. I'm actually in Bulgaria (that's a country in Eastern Europe) and working on getting my permaculture / eco-building business called "Blue Skies EOOD" off the ground. (The eventual goal is to help make public orphanages here self-sustainable as well as teaching the kids how to be more self-reliant through a combination of permaculture design, eco-building, honest grass roots business (even if it is just a fruit stand at the local market), and hopefully one day even a credit union that will allow the kids to create a financial system to fund themselves to travel or pursue education). Wow, that was long-winded, huh? Anyway, to get down to the heart of the matter of why I'm writing, while watching your channel I've never really seen how you cook or if you use natural gas. and if so how you get your gas for your stove and I was curious as to if you have your own methane bio-gas digester or not and if you don't I wanted to share some cool videos that I found on youtube about them incase your interested. This is a safe and effective way for you to provide your own cooking gas and garden fertilizer out of ground up food waste (yes, you can even put cooked food, oils and fats, etc. ) Here's some more info on a quick build or two that you might be interested in: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Cwm5Rm8uIsk.html (I liked the above link because it shows you a quick and easy way to build and cheap large system.) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3AZv6MjZylo.html (I liked the above link because he gives you some good info on different types of system and how to feed them.) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3SQ26MVbT2w.html (I liked this one because it shows you two mini systems that you can try out to see how they work before committing to a larger system.) If you do have your own methane bio-gas digester, I would love to pick your brains about it. Anyway, wish you lots of blessings in your adventures. Kind Regards, Yana

You could put some kind of reflecting material inside under the octagon to maximize the light inside
@michaeld_aus_b

you are build a kind of "ring anchor". Every building needs this on top of the topmost wall between the wall and the roof. Otherwise the weight of the roof (+ snow +water +etc) will push your walls to the outside. I build one on my garage to hold the weight of the green roof (4-5 t).

is the underside of the boards going to be seen? I know ppl don't usually leave it exposed. but I know a guy who had a cabin. and he had the chip board we call it. he had sanded and used sealer and polyurethane clear coating on it. it looked really good. also it helped reflect light and made for easier cleaning. but the hard part is sanding it to get it smooth. then seal it. all the different chips of wood reflect light differently. it can look nice. just an idea if its going to be exposed. I was hoping you guys would put a sky light in the center. and the eaves look great. great video!

This is not like other reciprocal roofs that I have seen (or built). Normally the rafters sit on top of each other - like you had in your test roof. It looks like you just built an octagonal frame for the center and nailed the ends of the rafters to that. It looks similer, but I can't imagine that it is anywhere near as strong as a traditional reciprocal roof. I think this is a critical mistake. Am I missing something? In a normal reciprocal roof, there is almost no outward pressure on the rest of the structure. As long as the ends of the rafters are secured in the middle, the force on the outside is almost entirely downward (not outwards) - so I think the cable would be completely unnecessary.

what do you estimate the R value for the insulation of this wall structure? best
@mylittlehomestead
@mylittlehomestead 7 лет назад
+Rev John O'Toole John, the best I could find was "Earth or soil has an R-value of about R 0.25 to R-1.0 per inch at 20% moisture content"
