Some years ago, Sheila Weller wrote a memorable joint biography of Carole King, Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell, entitled "Girls Like Us". The last is now first. In a book that bodes well to becoming definitive, David Yaffe has written a 400-page whopper of a biography of Joni Mitchell alone.
And what a tale he has to tell. This reclusive creature, who nonetheless permitted the author many a personal interview in the course of his researches, remains a peerless example of the ability to combine catchy tunes with catchy lyrics: an unusual combination in the '60s and '70s, albeit firmly upheld by all three ladies.
Joni Mitchell has not been well of late. May this handsome biography cheer her.
(You might also enjoy the video we taped in 2012 reviewing Joni's lovely illustrated children's book of her equally lovely song, "The Circle Game".)
