Reclaimed Timber Desk build - Forme Industrious

Man - it's been soooo long since I have been able to do a woodwork project and it so good to be able to get back in the workshop! I made this from discarded cedar tongue and groove wall boards. The timber (Hoop Pine or Perhaps Kauri Pine from North Queensland) needed a lot of work to clean it up for this furniture project but I think it was well worth it. The desk is simply made, light weight for my cabin's loft and additionally the desk is made to flat pack for transport if necessary.
Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed the video.
See you next time;
Scott

To all the woodworkers and makers out there: You probably don’t think about it when you are hip dip in it and enjoying what you made but 80 years from now, maybe one of your great grandchildren or someone else’s will love to know who made that, maybe where and when. It will add so much enjoyment to owning the piece and might save it from destruction to have your signature etc on it somewhere. I now it is only a little table right now, but in a couple of generations, it will be an heirloom and family history. Love it!

It definitely is not cheating. If a woodworker 100 years ago had access to a CNC Machine they definitely would have used it. Looks great Scott.

I Built a third life table from some scrap heading to the burn pile. It was a very limited amount of wood that I had to get all of the parts out of with no room for mistakes. I really enjoyed working within the limitations and the whole time it just felt great reusing someone's trash to make something beautiful. Also I am a woodworker and am a bit of a snob with CNC stuff. But it is just another tool. More power to those who enjoy it. I work on computer for a living and I don't want to come home to another computer when I am getting lost in my shop. Always enjoy your videos.

Very nice use of scrap wood. I too am sold on the thread inserts. I use a brad point bit to transfer mark for drilling, instead of a pencil, it only makes a fine point to locate drill. With the prices of new materials these days, saving scraps is the way to go. Thanks for sharing.

Great to use reclaimed materials, using the CNC, if you have the big lads toys, use them, doing stuff and enjoying doing them is what its all about for most of us. We all i'm sure have bought new tools to play with , and that make our projects a bit easier or more fun . i bought a plasma cutter instead of using oxy torch for cutting my metal, did I really need it , not really, but its fun to use. unless we profess to being a purist in a certain field, then use what the heck you like. kind regards to you and your lass.

Beautiful piece of furniture. Tapered legs look so much better than straight legs. BTW, you should make a "CNC is NOT cheating" t-shirt to sell!! I'm going to cut a sign from steel with that text next time I'm running the laser. I always found it strange that people think some tools are OK and others arent't. Nice work, thank you for sharing. And you don´t need to apologize for using a CNC machine. It´s a tool, just like a handplane. Anyone who says its "cheating" never had to push the Start button on a CNC and worry about what it will do to your workpiece. CNCs are uncaring and unforgiving, so taming them to do what you want is a great skill to have.

Scott it’s great to see a project video, not that your construction build weren’t entertaining. I’m not sure but I was concerned about the table top fixings. I got the 6mm machine screws into the inserts, I use these a times as well, but I would think just 1mm either way ( it was an 8mm drill through the top ?) might not be enough allowance for seasonal wood movement. I like the cnc results with the butterfly’s. if I had one I’d use one, mine a manual but like anything, it what works for you. Regards
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious 27 минут назад
Thanks Gerard! Yes I used an 8mm bit for the screw shank and 13 mm for the head bore. Yes there is a chance it may not be enough but it's what I have used plenty of times previous with success (to date). Time will tell. At least this timber is well seasoned. All the best!

Nice project, well done. For the paint, how well do you think using an end mill or even a small fly cutter with tungsten carbide to strip the paint. I don't think anyone would look down on that use of CNC (tho I don't look down on it for your use of it).
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious 8 часов назад
Cheers! It would be interesting to try and machine the paint off though I'd say it would ball up on the cutter rather than create chips. The planner would be easier if I knew I had zero nails. I'll buy a metal detector, will make life easier.

Interesting video, have you done one on the CNC, pro/cons etc, have you found its worth the money🎉

Thanks Steve! I did a couple of videos when I first built the Cnc, but nothing for years now. Yes worth it. It has easily paid for its self but still way under-utilised as I have been doing other property related, non paying work.

It's so hard to buy decent quality cabinetmaking timber that is priced realistically. Using recycled is definitely worthwhile.

Scott, a lovely little table. The wood has such warmth to it. It looks like a pine or fir. Is it native Australian timber?
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious 47 минут назад
Thank you! I think it is Hoop or Kauri Pine, yes native to Australia I believe.

heat, but by heat gun, worked best on my old porch windows. They were also years of paint, latex over old enamel. Some of the old enamel was very hard and didn't want to come off any other way.

Yes I've used paint striper also in the past and its horrible to work with. Heat seems to be best.

Thanks for showing me the angled dowel to replace two straight ones that won't fit. Q, I can only find threaded inserts made from alloy metal. I think steel would be better but I can't find any. Maybe some engineer type figured out the softer metal is better for reasons I don't know. Any thoughts?
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious 2 часа назад
Thank you! I only go for the steel inserts. I found mine on Ebay. Alloy is probably okay but would strip out much easier.

Don't you afraid of wood cracking in the table top? You screwed based directly to the top. Or you made enlarged holes to compensate wood movement?
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious День назад
I made enlarged holes so the top can move to the base attachment. It will be fine, I have accounted for movement.

What sort of timber? Looks like maybe Hoop Pine?
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious

Yes my guess would be Hoop or Kauri Pine also. I used Cedar on the leg braces

@@ScottTurnerformeindustriousLove the project. If you've no objection I might copy it with some old hoop pine floorboards that came from an old Qlander in Ipswich. 🎉
