Thank you sooo much for this video! My husband was ready to buy a new mower but I was adamant that this one could be fixed. I watched the video several times and did it myself!! It started right up after. Thanks again!
I have watched a couple of your video's it is a pleasure watch you work. I have bin rescuing curb side small engines for 35 years. It is A real pleasure to watch you teach how to do things correctly.
Very good camera work Stella! I hate when the engine jerks the handle out of my hand. Your repair was spot on and your step by step of the repair was excellent. I love to see people using a torque wrench in stead of just putting the jack hammer to it! ✌🇺🇸👍 Roger
Thanks for watching Mr. Roger. I figure a job worth doing is worth doing right :) I'll wail on my own stuff, but try and go by the book on other folks equipment. Cheers!
That’s a good way too Mr. D. Sometimes I have trouble banging it off with a key so badly smeared on the taper. I’ve bent smaller cranks when they really stuck on.
Good video. Another violent recoil kickback reason can be a loose blade because it was´nt tigthened enough to the blade adapter or a friction disk was worn out. I have experienced that after destroing to drills using them on flywheel attempting to start.
Another thing I've noticed too, is flywheels rotated only a few degrees out of spec, the more violent the kickback. I've had my fair share of bumps, bruises, and twisted wrists using a drill to start these small engines :) Thanks for watching Mr. Niels!
We subscribed! We've already watched 4 videos that aren't specifically about our Honda mower, but your explanations are so clear and well-presented that they're enjoyable to watch regardless. We own a Honda HRN216VKA lawn mower that suddenly stopped working about 3 months ago after its last use. We usually hire someone to take care of our lawn, so we don't use it often. We've already changed the oil, replaced the fuel, replaced the spark plug, and cleaned the air filter (which was barely dirty). We also checked the carburetor, and it appears very clean with no signs of water or dirt. Unfortunately, the mower still won't start. At this point, can you please recommend the next troubleshooting steps we should take? We'd also appreciate it if you could suggest the tools and any lubricants we might need to get this mower running again. By the way, we learned while changing the oil: Even after the oil seems to have stopped draining, tilting and flipping the mower a few times can help get out even more oil! Thanks. Looking forward for your response
I appreciate you watching. Start with the basics: spark, fuel, and air. Spark testers are cheap from autoparts store. check for fuel flow by loosening the bolt on the carb bowl, and open the fuel tap. If fuel dribbles out, fuel is probably no the issue. I have several playlists on Honda. Check them out for more resources: ru-vid.com/group/PLscwXOlCLzlzHYMopMHmLP3oqzZ07e6DF&si=p_b9ZLsQqsTKGYsS
@TheLawnmowerLady thank you a tone. We purchased an in-line spark tester at Harbor Freight, but the bulb did not light at all. Is this a clear indicator for a default coil ignition or something else? Thanks for the videos.
@@SatellaPower Could be several other things... broken brake cable, cable out of adjustment, etc. Trace that kill wire to the coil, it could be chaffed and grounding out on the engine somewhere. You can always disconnect the wire from the coil to see if it starts without the cable/brake assembly. Be prepared to pull the spark plug boot to kill the engine if it does start, or just let the carb run dry. You just have to methodically eliminate each path of failure, one step at a time.
@@TheLawnmowerLady Thanks. we got a hold of the Honda Engines Lawnmower HRN216 Service Manual on insighter today, and it's a lot more clearer for the troubleshooting steps. Thank you for your help. Greatly appreciated.
I'm happy to help. Some folks put a big prybar under the flywheel and whack the end of the crank with a big hammer. I'm not too keen on that method, easy to bugger the threads of the crank, and can damage the flywheel if you pry up in a weak spot. Cheers!
Thanks for watching Mr Rick! That guy got a new blade for sure, and if I recall, maybe a new blade adapter too. I'll sharpen a blade but I won't bend them back into shape.
Hey u did it. 1000 subscribers. Check it out. Cajun and mentioned how good your channel was and encouraged people to subscribe that wasn't already. Then bam u hit 1000
Buzz the OLD MAN here from Eliminator Performance: Good thing you did not snap an elbow cause that is how bad the kick back can be. Very good video, we normally just whack the crankshaft with the nut flush and light pressure with a prey bar under the flywheel and they pop right off. Woodruff keys are half moon shaped and made of steel normally on riding mowers, the push mowers normally have aluminium keys of different shapes ie: B&S straight rectangular and Techumseh has an offset key in some cases. Taryl normally uses an air impact hammer if the crankshaft has the countersunk center.
Ha! I cringed when I heard myself say woodruff and knew I was gonna get busted :) In my defense, I come from the moped and antique scooter world and they're all woodruff keys, not sacrificial like these small engines. Thanks for watching Mr Wayne!
Yep! That too. I say "atomizer" all the time rather than "emulsion tube" for the same reason. Reminds me of that riddle: Why do we park in a driveway, but drive on a parkway?
Never worry about getting busted just about every RU-vid creator has bloopers that they either have edited out or just left them in to see if someone comments on it. Keep up the good work, glad to see the ladies getting involved.
That was a good lesson , curious question was there a need to set or recheck the coil? Or did the fly just spin Free and not get its position disrupted?
Thanks for watching Mr Joe. I usually only need to re-set the ignition gap when I move the coil itself. Never had a problem with the gap after removing a flywheel.
@@TheLawnmowerLady thatsvwhat I thought just wanted to be sure I wasn't surebif it always had to be redone when the timing was upset kinda like a car when a distributor or chain belt goes there are a lottt of things to gave to reset and align thank you Stella another great lesson that makes joe ,mow happy !!😀
Absolutely if the cable is indeed broken. Do you see the brake pad move when you activate the cable? I made this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-884sqyIEP7c.html More of a generic how-to rather than a model specific, but hope that helps.
I have had several Briggs and Stratton engines on old mowers when been stood a long time clean carburettor run perfect then go back later and won’t start kick back on pull start checked timing oil level valves can’t find a problem is it oil getting passed rings any thoughts as have had a few like this please
Next time that happens, pull the spark plug, pull on the starter a few times, and replace the plug. If it starts fine then, you are getting partial hydro-lock either from oil or fuel getting to the combustion chamber. Replace the needle seat in the carb to eliminate fuel fuel getting in there. And store the machine with the pull cord just where it gets tension to ensure both valves are closed. That’s my guess?
an air hammer will yard it off quick as well. little pressure under the flywheel and hit the air hammer on the shaft it will pop up no prob. Using them pullers are a pain in the rear. So much easier to just use an air tool to do the work.
I just went through the installation of the Carb rebuild kit for the exact Briggs and Stratton motor and Carb. setup that I have. Nobody else ever mentioned this exact Mower setup. I am still trying to keep it running after a col or warm start. It seems that I might have a Fuel Flow starvation problem possibly. That or one of those little ports in the Carb body itself may have slipped by me without being clean out. I guess that we'll see when I do this removal of the Carb once again. Thank you sincerely for a excellent job of presenting a very clear 😅How-to-walk-through. Jeff Sabo (Edge)
Thanks for watching. I've always been mechanically inclined, and enjoyed working with my hands, and solving puzzles. I got my feet wet with small engines with antique motor scooters: Vespa, Lambretta, etc.
@@TheLawnmowerLady I’ve been looking for a girl that graduated from NADC with me. She was the first female to graduate from there. She is a close friend and I’ve lost touch with her. I love seeing women in this field. Keep up the great work dear
Maybe you can help me I git a black max 450e push mower my flywheel key was sheard so I fixed but still won't start so I put a new carburetor on it still won't start so when u go to pull the cord it pops and a little flame come out of the carburetor any suggestions on what I can do next
The next place I would look would be under the valve cover. Confirm the valves are indeed opening and closing. These mowers have plastic cams that can spin on the camshaft, and create a similar timing issue. I hope this helps.
@@TheLawnmowerLady I just wanna tell you thank you for your help who ever had this mower before me had the valves tighting all the way tight you couldn't even get a 00.1 gauge through it so I readjusted them and it fired right up thank you again
I'm having the same problem. I asked eliminator performance wayne and Jake they said same thing.. well the sheerkey is lined right up. So now I'm stumped
craftsman tiller encountered a big old rusty smashed and buried section of galvanized culvert under my blackberry field. couldn't use my hand for weeks after. so painful!
Not to be pickey, but the arm from the thermal actuator is bent against the choke air vane. This hinders the free moovement of the air vane and will cause the engine to run too rich. I think that strong observation skills is one of the most important parts of being a good service tech. A little side note, A "woodruf key" has the shape of a half moon, otherwise any other shaft key is called by it's end profile.
Its really hot in West Texas but I v all ready rebuilt carb on a asphalt packer and a bs carb plus oil and air filters Fixing to pull engine on orange blower to over haul
