Another video in my Recolor series where I take a piece of artwork from one of my wonderful subscribers and recolor their art. This one is from Kate Gollnow and is a beautiful piece. You can find her instagram here... / dark_tanookie
And her youtube channel here... / @darktanookie
This is the unedited version so you can see everything I did in real time. It's a long one! I don't claim to have mastered all of the techniques, but just wanted to show my process and struggles with this and I hope you find it helpful.
I also offer mentorships, workshops and more at my website www.lightingmen...
Keep creating!!

Yes, You worry to much about the length of your videos. I do not have 3 hours to watch in one setting, BUT for the past 3 days I have been watching around an hour a day. I appreciating you showing the entire process. I am an extremely impatient person, and these videos reminds me that the ugly, frustrating bits are important to push through to get to the good stuff.

This is the EXACT kind of video I’ve been looking for! There’s so much “painting magic” that happens in those “boring” segments that often get sped up and bypassed. These segments, especially where you talk about your color choices for adjusting the local colors, while keeping the lighting effects you’ve already added are so beneficial! Thank you for making this video!

I think reason for that is, some artists want to keep their process a mystery, when really, art is a process and anyone can produce art if they want to find a process that works for them. I say, if you have an interest, you can do it. That's what the arrogant artist do not want you to find out.

I'm so glad you decided to show us the struggles. It's nice to know that someone as skilled as you still has freak-out moments in the middle where it's like "Well... this isn't working. What do I do now ?" Inevitably in almost every painting I make, I hit a point where it feels like I don't even know what the heck I am doing and the imposter syndrome voice gets real loud. I hit the wall and think to myself "I've been doing this my whole life and I know nothing. The last painting must've just been a fluke." But eventually I finish the painting. Sometimes it turns out great, sometimes I might not LOVE the result, it might not be *perfect* but it's another notch along the learning ladder and at least I made it through. 1 down, a million more to go. I know that makes it sound like I hate being an artist, and at times I feel like I do... but I also love it and can't live without it. So yeah.

Yeah I kinda hate it when people need to put constant elevator music to educational videos, so that they wouldn't be "boring". It's just distracting, if people came to get educated, then they are interested in the subject matter, not the music.

Thanks for putting this together! I see so many sped up videos I have no point of reference for how long a nice painting like this should realistically take. I also like it without music and just casual talking. Thanks! Love your work!

On music: Imo it's fine to have some, especially if it helps *you* to work, but in principle, if people need music to focus on the video, it's trivially easy to have some music play at the same time, and then it's 100% up to the viewer what music is played how loudly etc.

I loved this video because i have never seen an approuch likes yours on coloring. It's really awesome starting by the general lights and then thinking about local colors! I have never thought about this method and I am sure that makes the scene more coherent. If i could afford your courses i would take them for sure but really thanks for your free content! It's unbelievable and I learn a lot with it. Sorry for my english but I am a fellow italian aspiring artist. Again thanks a lot!

Thanks for showing your whole process. There aren't many videos in real time from start to finish with explanation of the process. The struggle is real: undo, undo, undo, painting on the wrong layer, using the wrong brush, getting stuck, etc. And I never thought you zoom in. The amount of time and effort put in really shows in the final artwork.

Seeing the whole piece, you did great work overall and this was very insightful. Whenever color relativity comes into play it's almost like a little magic trick. I think magenta light is probably some of the trickiest to get down partially because it's not something experienced very often in reality. (There is a reason people choose magenta for their default texture-is-missing color) and so I'm not surprised you struggled with that at first, but you really got there, especially on day 2. One thing I noticed (and I'm sure you would have too if you had spent more time on this than an already quite long RU-vid video allows) is that you lost a lot of the shape in particular on the legs.

Thank you for making this. I do a lot of work using compositing techniques in photoshop but I always start with a line drawing and then playing values and colors to evaluate if my design is working and to explore potential lighting options. This was really helpful to see how you think about light and how you build up detail.

Terrific video. Fascinating to watch the process. I liked the single backlight with the fog shadows behind her, but you were right that it the rear side more obscure. Just down to personal preference, I guess, and your second rim light gave you more opportunities to see that kind of shaking in action.

Love this stuff, dude. Like others have said, don't need music. Like you've alluded to, most artists skip over the struggle and confusion aspect of making art, and it's super comforting to hear that even woefully talented people still grapple with these things. I'm primarily into photography but I love thinking about light in this way, as often times it can be challenging to perceive why one photo in "similar" circumstances didn't work and why the next did. Much love!

I'm learning so much! Around 25:43, there is a circle that shows up. Is that tool sampling color from the picture. Thank you for bringing up the fact that there are some artists who are arrogant, they just get on RU-vid to toot their horn not to teach anything. Thank you so much, that has been my experience with some fellow artists all my life.

Hi Light Mentor! I love your content. Lots to learn about light and painting by watching your videos. I really like the paint brushes you use, I am always trying to get that loose, painterly look but can never get it right by the standard photoshop brushes - especially that mixer brush you use. Do you have a brush pack that you sell? Thanks! CA

From midway on, you turned the lines on and off somewhat frequently. Is it a good rule of thumb to check the line layer until it no longer improves the painting, or is this futile since the lines will always make it look a little better because of the contrast?
@LightingMentor
@LightingMentor 5 месяцев назад
My goal with adding light to paintings is to not have line art. Line art is fine and sometimes is a wonderful thing as it adds contrast, but we don't see lines around real world objects and my goal is to paint a more believable image and so I just use the line art as a guide until I no longer need it

I don't understand why people value art, created via software, less than they do art created manually. Software is just a tool. It's not great because of the kind of brush you use. You still have to do the same process whether you use a mouse and keyboard or brush and canvas.

Thank you for the video. Here's some feedback: 1. Too much saturation everywhere. (Could be good to either have one overall chromatic wash that's saturated, and breaking away from a smaller degree to add dynamism, or have a more neutral fill with one focal tone and other spots with a lower degree of saturation) 2. Lack of a clear value design and focus. (I'd pick the focus as either the magic or the fire. In this case personally I'd pick the magic, as the fire is more mundane and isn't as compositionally interesting in the image.) 3. The local colors/values seem off. (They aren't as locally cohesive as they could be, the value pattern is therefore a bit hard to read, making the first impression a bit more muddy).

@@birmix good point. I didn't intend to come off arrogant. My profession is to set a vision and give feedback (I'm an ad), so I'm used to just generally being straight forward, matter of fact.
