Staff Sgt. Jacob Faulkner, a Marine with 3D Reconnaissance Battalion, 3D Marine Division describes what it takes to become a reconnaissance Marine. Reconnaissance Marines specialize in amphibious reconnaissance, ground reconnaissance, surveillance, battlespace shaping and raids in support of Marine Divisions. Being first in the fight, they are the eyes and ears of the commander and a critical element in the defense of the interests of the United States.

Looking back, this is seriously one of the greatest regrets I have. I was a line grunt from '05 to '09 and if you served in that period you know how crazy the deployment cycles were. So actual true opportunities to try for Recon did not come often (bout once a year) and when they did, they had very small time frame windows. Usually just a coupla days to sign up. And I never jumped on them. I play the what if game with that all the time. I don't know if I would have made it, but I never even gave myself a chance to least try and that kills me to this day.
@cm-pr2ys

eliminshrintar dude that blows. With all the work you were doing you probably didn’t have too much time to do a prep program for Recon to increase your chances of making it unless you wanted to be tired all the time and have no social life. For what it’s worth, I fucked up when I joined and accepted a pog contract when I wanted to be a grunt, so I always regret not fighting for an 03 contract. Maybe you can try to get back in?

I feel you bro my first enlistment I did 2 MEU's back to back (9/11). We didn't have time to sit down with our senior SNCO's and talk B Billets and career paths. Recon never appealed to me until I had a Sgt Major Vasquez dude was an animal. He did triathlons for PT! By that time I was a senior Sgt. On my way out. I wanted to be in Security Forces and eventually be on a F.A.S.T. Co. But it is what it is. Marines going I now have a world of information there is no reason to not achieve any goals in the military today.

I will say this...as far as recruiting for Recon goes, they will never be short of people wanting this kind of badass job. However, I really think the Corps is lacking when it comes to physically preparing people for BRPC while they are in Boot Camp and ITB. Instead of properly stretching, exercising (good form, etc.), and avoiding overuse injuries by making time to recover, we just push recruits and Marines through half ass, random ass pt sessions and hikes that may injure you. Incentive Training is not a sufficient way to prepare you for BRPC. I think we can look at revising our physical training regimen and philosophy in boot camp and ITB, preferably to PT more and with harder workouts while promoting recovery time and decreasing overuse injuries.

I've noticed how today's Reconnaissance depend on high tech. Which I think is fine... don't get me wrong. Anything to get the advantage. But I hope we're not forgetting basics. Moving at night WITHOUT the use of GPS or compass. Communicating long distances WITHOUT the use of radios. Finding and purifying water WHEN you run out of halezone tablets. After a hairy encounter with the enemy, you can lose gear or discover your equipment doesn't work anymore. In either case, I pray we're not forgetting to teach our recon Marines "low-tech" or primitive skills for high tech problems.

Some SEALs are idiots, some recon marines are also idiots, some are badasses, some have terrible reputations. Recon marines go on MEUs for the most part. SEALs go train foreigners and occasionally recon will go train foreigners also, recon marines are trained to fight til you die, SEALs are more about bounding away and breaking contact. Recon men are treated like shit and dgaf about hardship, SEALs are pampered unless they are actively training or working. Join and become both then you will know.

2 different jobs 2 different types of requirements, you shouldn't ask "what's harder" just find which one is a calling to you and go do it if you fail meh, at least you got some expert level training.
@harrisonpennington5784
@harrisonpennington5784 5 лет назад
Recon is more physically demanding but if you make it through the rigorous fiveish month long course then you’re guaranteed a spot, whereas Marsoc is not as physically demanding but it’s possible to make it all the way through the course and not be selected at the end.

Nick Koumalatsos on RU-vid has a video on Recon vs Raider. He was both. Search for it on RU-vid.
@cm-pr2ys
@cm-pr2ys 5 лет назад
Well, I’ve heard dudes say the swim tests for Recon is harder than MARSOC, and for MARSOC, you can prepare for it while you’re in the fleet (hint hint MARSOC’s own 10 week training guide, Nick Koumalatsos’ MARSOC Prep, Stew Smith’s Recon/ MARSOC Prep, Mountain Tactical Institute’s MARSOC Prep). If you fail Recon right out of ITB, you will be a POG, whether you volunteer for it at ITB or sign up with a Recon Contract. I am not sure what happens if you fail Recon after doing a Lateral Move. If you fail MARSOC, you just go back to your old job in the Fleet. Recon you have to go through after 4 months of Boot Camp and the first part of ITB respectively. Those 2 portions of your training don’t really get you in the best shape for Recon because you aren’t meant to train to be Recon, you’re meant to be a basically trained Marine. You also won’t have time to follow a Recon training guide in Boot Camp or Infantry Training Battalion. Reconnaissance Indoctrination Platoon, or RIP is gone, having been replaced with Basic Reconnaissance Preparatory Course (BRPC) to weed out those that probably wouldn’t pass Basic Reconnaissance Course (BRC). If you head over to Recon training at the end of ITB, and all the BRPC/ BRC classes are full (no room to train), you might get put in a holding platoon called “Marines Awaiting Recon Training”, aka MART. MART basically PT’s you all day and does some classes to make good use of your time before you get to BRPC. However, sometimes the classes are so full that you are stuck there for an indefinite amount of time. You could be there for 1 month, 6 months, or even 10 months. Try not to get disillusioned. Many people have said that BRPC was harder than BRC. BRPC is a month long. BRC is 2 months long. Nick Koumalatsos also has a Recon Prep book, as well as Stew Smith’s all in one book I mentioned earlier, Mountain Tactical Institute, and an actual 10 week Recon guide (hunt for it on google). BRPC/ BRC doesn’t really have a selection process. As long as you survive the training, you’re in. There are no rank requirements as you can go to Recon right after Boot Camp and ITB. You can also Lateral Move to Recon after you’ve been in the fleet for a while. I DON’T know if there are any extra requirements to go from Division Recon to Force Recon, so you might want to google that on your own. Recon has their own special fitness tests you must pass before you can get to BRPC, called the Reconnaissance Screener, AND the Reconnaissance Physical Assessment Test.As of now, MARSOC does not, you just do the regular USMC PFT’s and CFT’s and get hazed a lot. To go MARSOC, you must be in the fleet in any MOS for at least 3 years and you must meet certain rank requirements (they change all the time so google it). What if you meet all the requirements but you are the wrong rank? Furthermore, it takes 9 months to pass the Assessment and Selection Course, and the Individual Training Course. Like someone else above me said, if you make it to then end of these 2 courses, there is still a selection board where current experienced MARSOC Marines interview you, and get to decide whether they really want to accept and work with you based on your responses to their questions, and, your performance over the last 9 months. I know a guy that passed all the training and was a good team player, but they didn’t accept him at the board. Can you imagine going through the hardest training the Marine Corps has to offer, and then being denied and sent back to the job you were trying to get away from? Something to consider. MARSOC’s A&S and ITC have been rumored to be VERY professional though, whereas BRPC/ BRC is more of a haze fest. Both of them offer you more opportunities to go to Scout Sniper School than being a regular 03 Infantry Marine would though, and, MARSOC gets more funding to do more cool missions and use cool gear than Recon does. To be honest, I’ve heard many stories of Recon/ Force Recon AND MARSOC dudes leaving the Marine Corps to go Army Rangers/ Green Berets, or SEALs because they are treated better (more money, more cool missions, more respect). You have to keep in mind that the regular/ traditional/ conventional Marine Corps doesn’t like or know how to use these “special” Marines. They consider them cowboys and only care about them when it looks like the Marine Corps is about to lose a “Special” mission to another branch. That’s the most attention these jealous, hater higher ups will pay attention to Recondos and Raiders. MARSOC Special Operations Officers didn’t even have a career path until recently! Both communities have less bullshit than the fleet though, but you’re underutilized compared to other branches. Keep in mind that the Army and Navy don’t have this problem. I’d recommend the Rangers (8 weeks of RASP after US Army OSUT and you’re in, Ranger School, more funding to get cool gear, missions, and training, you’re more well known and respected in your branch, you can transition to Green Berets, Delta, or Ranger Reconnaissance Company instead of just MARSOC, and you focus on actually killing people, NOT mainly Special Reconnaissance (Recon/ Force Recon), or mainly sharing Foreign Internal Defense (MARSOC)). Hope this helps
