I took part in the Kill the Hill event, a new and unique cycling event Mallorca! Within the event was a hill climb to the highest point on the island, up to 1500m above sea level! After travelling the day before I wasn't sure how I'd respond to the heat and altitude, given I live at sea level year round but was pleasantly surprised to set the record for this climb!

A little about Ed….
Ed is an elite cyclist, 2019 British Hill Climb Champion and former Under 23 British RR Champion. He has raced as a Continental level Professional Rider for one of the most successful British cycling teams in Japan, Korea, Australia, Canada, Azerbaijan to name a few. He is also a public speaker, coach, and founded the on/offline cycling community, Backpedal. At the start of 2021, the Discord community began, and plonked many of Ed's viewers in to a 550+ strong group of people that had many things in common. Not least wanting to explore the world and pedal their bikes faster!

Fabulous video yet again.👍 Those two on your wheel, early part of the climb sequence, wouldn't they do a turn?, I suspect that it was a case of 'couldn't do a turn'.😉🥵😂

I spent a month in Mallorca with a local, she taught me so much. Puig Mayor is pronounced Poo-ggee may-or. If you ever see 2 LL's together they are pronounced as a Y. Hence Mallorca is really Mi(y)orca the Y is almost silent. Pollença is Pie-en-ca. Soller is pronounced soy-yah. Hope that's helps. Love your videos, been a subscriber for years!

Mallorca resident here - it is pronounced - "Pudge Mayor"; Lluc is pronounced "Yuuk"

All the times I’ve cycled Majorca and I never knew you were allowed to cycle to the white dome. Can you normally?

@maldickerson Mallorcan resident here. no. It is a Spanish military base. Was fully closed to everybody for 40+ years. Not even hikers can enter. Last year for some unknown reason they allowed access for two bike races ~ LaBola (a 17km hill climb from Soller) and "Kill the Hill" a 7km climb from the top of the public road at Cuber Lake.

Another great vid Ed and again chapeau on the climb. Watching these Majorca vids has certainly whetted the appetite and fortunately off to the island on Saturday for some riding. Keep up the good work 🚴 💪👍....oh and for the record I'd definitely prefer to climb it than descend it since breaking the hip in a crash last year👍

Cracking video Ed, inevitably reminded me of Great Dun Fell up our way, I wonder if it was more, or less, difficult as I see you've done that yourself previously? I only did it once aged 72 but out of all the open & National hill climbs I did as a younger Vet I consider it would have been the hardest had I had the opportunity ever to race up it; fancy a crack at Feather's course record some day then?

Trouble is everytime Ive entered the GDF HC it's been cancelled. Don't think it gets very many entries nowadays. GDF is harder than this climb though.

Cracking ride. Couple questions if you don't mind : is this section up to observatory normally closed? Was it only open for the event or will it be pssible for us mere mortals to do it sometime? Also, what gearing did you use for the climb? Thanks.

It is nearly always closed, and only open for these events. I used a 52/36 and 11-30 cassette.

This is the small hill climb, you really need to do the version of this race that starts in Soller and races to the same finish point. La Bolla. 17km climb. Early April usually. 1000 starters in 2024.

La Bola - 13.8 ( Sóller--> tunnel Monaber ) +7km ( zona militar ) Total 20.8kms. (approx). A event with an harder route 100/100

Brilliant video and massive well done. Does anyone who has entered this know the approximate cost? I'd love a go next year and done the 312 three time and can't be doing with all the craziness of that event anymore.

I appreciate that John, and I can tell you are well meaning. I did race at British UCI Continental level with a very good race calendar up until 2018. I only really started to find my strengths in that same year but the team folded and I was left without the chance to find another team. You need more than power numbers to race WT as I’m sure you know. I had a few oppourtunites to lead the team at stage races but never quite got it right. When I stopped racing and started building my own career I’ve managed to keep the performances going as I come in to my peak age

@@edlaverack thank you for the reply.yes I was aware you'd raced at jlt .I susspose its part of my fascination with the sport how tight the margins can be at the level you raced and the collapse of teams at pivotal points in your career----mr stephens comes to mind with this also----brilliant videos well produced and your enthusiasm and lack of ego is brilliant 👍.

For the ones that don't know , the Puig Major military zone has been closed to cyclists the last 13years , but now since 2023 there have been 2 events per year ( la Bola (or) La Perez) and the Kill the hill. The first one has 1000+ participants , kill the hill has 300, now what is the main difference, the More popular One , we do the full climb and it's timed from soller so you have the 13.8km+ oF Puig Major till Monaber Túnel and after a 300m descent you start the 7km , of the military zone. And is far much harder. kill the hill is group ride over the 'easier" side (untill they race the 7km of the military area) and everyone climb over the "easy side " So Ed you have smashed a really cool KOM but of a smaller field and NO pros , and you didnt ride to the very end of the road , that is next to that house and the official Strava segment was not taken. All the intermediate ones yes . 😊 Next time try KOM the 'Mirador formentor (1st view point) that is the most popular climb in Mallorca ,(more attempts) and the KOM is from contador (under 7min) 3.33kms 6.7%. .ride on

@@edlaverack haha I understand you, I seen you ride and I rode in some events with you so I seen your power , and totally understand you are ( close2) world class , and that KOM in SA Calobra was amazing and Tom's performance with a VAM that he NEver replicated in a race for that amount of time was "dodgy*. In other hand this PuigM- KOM was a easy steal for a guy at your level( versus the available field past and present ).and the layout of the Event. Not taking away any of the merit, your W/kg and VAM , speak for themselves. But please don't be like that " cookie Kom guy " you know who . Hahaha Ride on.

There is something in common with all those who climb the mountains very fast. They are very slow going down. I prefer to be more balanced. Normal uphill and fast down. In the end, it's all about enjoyment.💫

Glad you enjoy a good fast descent! As a former pro I was certainly made to go downhill faster than I'd like to, I won't be taking any risks downhill anymore though :)
