Have you ever had that visit when you walk into the record store and you see that record that you must have, money suddenly does not become an object, you just must leave home with that today. Sadly that happens to often too me, lack of will power lets say. That said i have a couple of albums that fit into that category. Join me as I gone on and on about these albums and join in my excitement or just take to question my sanity

Awesome finds! Happy you rounded it out with some classical too. Another good interpretation of that symphony is Bernstein conducting Mahler. Sonic Youth is definitely a special grab.

I appreciate hearing you like the classical. I am trying to squeeze that in when I can and still stay under 30 minutes, not easy for me lol. I think the music is so important but also interesting. Sonic Youth was something I have never seen in the wild, I was lucky

Hi Steve - Sonic Youth have never clicked with me but I did quite enjoy the clip you played. Nice Joe Strummer, I remember listening to that album when it originally came out. Good luck with the cat interviews...
@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147

Cat interviews continue to be a disaster Dale. They are very nonverbal about their needs and just stare at me. Sonic Youth is not easy but Goo and Dirty actually had music that had normal song structure. They pulled away from all the experimental noise. That is why those albums click with me

Hiya Steve! That Shadows of Knight album is a great find! There's so much more to the band than just Gloria, which sometimes gets overlooked. I was floored when you showed the Country Bob album - I don't think anyone else in the VC has talked about them! Those guys had quite a few tongue-in-cheek punk projects, with Almighty Lumberjacks of Death being one of my favorites... name-wise, at least. Thanks for sharing and have a great week!

Dave, I had no idea about Country Bob either but I did see it was done in Detroit so I was quite curious. Definitely tongue in cheek music, just some guys trying to have some fun. Not sure how big they were outside of Detroit.

Mark, I agree with it being more listenable Sonic Youth. Butch Vig effect I guess. After this album it began to change back to more noise. You are much more an expert on classical, I just know what I like and don’t like. Plan is to keep trying to introduce some classical, I have a lot of it

Gothic Death Punk, quite the genre Mike haha. Shadows of The Knight is top notch garage rock with the British Blues feel. To think they were from Chicago but used the British style of blues. Hi Uncle Steve. I find it so ironic that The Brits re-introduced the blues to many Americans. It seems that while a lot of UK bands were playing blues, there were only a few American bands doing the same at that time. That Back Door Men album sounds very good. I could get into that. By the way, Georgetown looks like a great place to spend a weekend... thanks for taking us along. Have a great week.
@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147
@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 4 месяца назад
Chris, it is pretty amazing that it did take British bands to get US bands interested in the blues. The Shadows were from Chicago! I guess the UK bands showed them how they could incorporate the blues in a more rock n roll style. The whole album is top notch. Colorado is filled with old mining towns, very fun to explore but very busy during the summer

From Dirty to Mahler nice 😊😊 I've just started reading Kim Gordon's autobiography so I wasn't aware they were married. I think like you as I've gotten older I'm up for a bit more experimental music but I like a tune too. Classical music I listen to alot whilst driving with work as it sits nicely in the background. There's few stations here including BBC radio 3 that's all classical 24 hours a day. Cheers

Classical for me is great in the background. Vocals grab your attention but classical can be relaxing. I have always enjoyed reading with classical on. The winter time I am told I will have a lot of time on my hand, maybe I can catch up then

That was an excellent review of the Sonic Youth Real Steve. That nailed it, I picked up several things I didn’t know. Goo is also my favourite. Country Bob, now that’s an album cover! A little more info on Joe Strummer for you. Joe’s favourite football team was Arsenal. Their very successful Captain in the 90’s was Tony Adams. He suffered some personal issues and was dumped, Joe thought it was a terrible injustice and wrote that song ‘Tony Adams’. Great show as always. Mike wanabee Steve.

Hi Steve I enjoyed your video. (as always) I only have Sonic Youth - The Diamond Sea which is I suppose a 12 inch single but it is over 30 minutes in length. The b side version of song is over 20 minutes in length. I agree with you daydream nation, Goo and Dirty are the essentials for me that I would like to add to my collection. Andy on RSD they did rerelease a greatest hits from Sonic Youth. Definitely the way to go. I plan to track that one down. Country Bob, pure tongue in cheek music, crazy stuff. Beautiful shots of Georgetown, looks like it's remained that way for generations. ' Borrow' a 🐈..lol!!.. can't understand why any feline worth their salt wouldn't want the honour of co hosting, Steve. I blow hot and cold with Sonic Youth..i recall Sugar Cane got lots of airplay over here. Joe Strummer was hugely talented as a songwriter and musician, and i liked his eclectic approach and influences. Liked The Shadows of Knight, some great Doors ish keyboards there. Prog rock is a minefield, some of it is adventurous and musically interesting yet it can also be interminable and boring..i think the Canterbury artists like Caravan and Steve Hillage hit the sweet spot for me. Still dipping my toe with modern classical..Mahler is certainly dramatic!. Hope you're having a great weekend Steve..good luck with the Cat interviews.

I use to have more prog in my previous collection but found I just was not playing it so as I was rebuilding I tried to focus on albums that I naturally grab. That said you always need to revisit music as our tastes do change with age. These little Colorado towns shot up in the mid 1800s, most were gold mine towns. Now many f them are very expensive to live in. There are a lot of them

Great vinyl review. I love Sonic Youth (one of my favorite bands) I prefer their albums Goo & Daydream Nation. I'm trying to listen to more Classical composers, other than Bach, Beethoven & Mozart. Rockies continue to be awful and the Avalanche got knocked out of the playoffs early. Not easy being a baseball fan in the UK. That’s like someone being a cricket fan in the US. Hi Steve, Hell of a find, that Sonic Youth. For me possibly their last great album, although they produced some quality product after. Their run from Bad Moon Rising to Daydream Nation has to be one of the best four album runs in rock history. The Joe Strummer I've been curious about off and on, especially since The Clash are my favorite band of all time. Anything by The Shadows Of Knight must be pretty rare by now. Gothic Country Punk? Who woulda thought? And I've never given Mahler a listen. Maybe I will. Appreciated the video, will check out more.

SY Dirty is a great one, and a very key record for me growing up. I only recently got a copy myself, a European press sometime last year. I think the only one I dont have now is Goo which for me, is not one of my favorites. But I dig it all the same. I am very tired of "Hey Joe" and yeah, every damn band did it. Hello Steve; Sonic Youth, around the music goes where it begins nobody knows. Joe Strummer, an underrated artist the Clash reggae sound is evident. Shadows Of Knight, 2nd LP in mono, with the track I'm Not Talking on the cover & not on the record. Blood Farmers, new age country with a rock beat. Aviator, with David Bowie style Sax. Take care, Tina & Pat!~

Hi Steve. I don’t know how I never heard of sonic youth in my teens because I was a diehard KROQ fan. I discovered them later in life. That’s a beautiful clean dirty copy or dirty clean copy lol. Let’s just say it’s downright bitchin! Nothing like a good multi-genre band. Shadows Of The Knight have a great sound! Aviator has a great sound. Mahler Symphonies No 1 the Joy Division of classical music 😂. I’m very picky when it comes to symphonies. They are a very small part of my 300+ classical record collection. Mahler No. 1 is a fantastic piece! Those Digital DGG pressings sound amazing.

Steve, what type of classical pieces do you go for? Are you more piano driven with classical. I love symphonies but I struggle with the quieter piano music. Quite frankly it puts me to sleep which is not a bad thing. I am a fan of opera. Use to be a member of the Detroit Opera until travel took me away too much. I was introduced to Sonic Youth by Rolling Stone when Daydream Nation came out. I struggled with their more noise rock type songs but I loved it when they had some melody.

Hi Steve - Saw Sonic Youth on Goo Tour & new labelmates Nirvana opened. On Dirty tour , the two traded spots. After Nevermind , Andy Wallace & Butch Vig did Dirty & then Andy did Grace for Tim Buckleys son Jeff & Butch got a band of his own with a Scottish muse Shirley Manson & they called themselves Garbage 🗑.

Wow, that is amazing about the concert David. Oh how the difference a year makes in the world of music. I hope they stayed on good terms. I remember Vig was in garbage which I found interesting with a producer in a popular band

You just don't see a lot of people on here showing cowboy death punk, you had to be the one Steve. Nice finds on the Shadows and Sonic Youth, I heard they got the Youth part from Big Youth (who I did a three part video series on) though you can't tell from their music that they were listening to him. Joe Strummer on the other hand was a reggae fan from the early Clash days and you can hear it in their songs. Have a good week Steve, glad you are starting to get some time to relax

Strummer loves to add that reggae beat to his music. Definitely a big part of the Clash but reggae was loved by the punks also. Cowboy Death Punk, a genre we all could enjoy diving into lol.

Robert Christgau wrote some of the most asinine record reviews. I love the song Sugarcane. And the needle drop song is killer as well. I also picked up that RSD reissue of Strummer and the Mescaleros, great record.

Richard, it seems Christgau had issues accepting something new. Rolling Stone could be like that to, a critic is only an opinion isn’t it. I rember you showing the Mescaleros album, I really enjoy all three of them.

lol Bruce on Blind Willie, I take it that is not the blues guy! I have not heard of him. Rent a cat for an hour a week, that would be wild, different cat guest host every week. Why would you rent a dog for a day, to pick up chicks?

EU elections? They have a special one for that? I did not know that Hasse. Strummer did a great job bringing in other musical genres which does make his albums interesting

Please stop saying Shadows of “THE” Knight. Makes me cringe! One of my favorite 60’s bands I saw with The Outsiders when I was 13. Possibly my very first concert! Yes I’m an old guy.

lol, I went back and checked the album, I swear there had been a The there before ! Sometimes I get something in my head and it just won’t leave. This is a classic case where The was stuck in my mind. Thanks for calling that out. That is fantastic you saw them in concert, how exciting
