I think Morphine has been a gateway for many “rock” fans to get into jazz. It sure guided me that way. Sad story on how that band ended. Pearl Jam’s peak to me was 1994-2002, album wise. Ten and Vs are good records musically but suffer from early 90s production techniques. Live those songs hit hard though, especially the Vs songs.
Mike we don't get Autumn colours like that here. Our season are dead or a bit more dead in colour. That looks like Jerimiah Johnson country. Best Bets, I'm stumped. I like the sound. It reminds a bit of 90's indie when there was hooks galore and the guitars were fuzzed out. Bands need to think about their name when it comes to google searches that could get you in trouble with your wife. 10cc at Lollapalooza? I'm a Duke Ellington appreciate-r and respect his huge influence on the shaping of jazz but it's just not the jazz I go to when I want to listen to that stuff. Coltrane, Miles, Ornette, Mingus, etc is where it's at for me. Sunflower Bean has a nice dreamy feel to it. I will research further. Well done on Thief & no need to be ashamed anymore Mike, until they spy more stuff on your next video. Cheers...Mike
Nice great outdoors footage grandpa Mike. So the Crows, not The Crows...got it 👍A bit Joy Division which is a good thing. Ozric Tenticles took me a while to realise it was upside down because of that trippy artwork. Sounds good. That 2nd Richard Hell is great. What's A Few Men was my intro to H&C. Listen to their song Talking To A Stranger and you won't consider them country rock. Punk funk weirdness & damn good. Saint Etienne's So Tough is a fun record. Gish & Siamese Dream were so good and then Billy Corgon thought he could sing and it got soooo bloated musically. I don't mind the song 1979 after those two but that's about it. Nice work Mike...Cheers Mike
Thanks for the great vid, Steve! I'm older, but early 1990s are the sweet spot for me! In addition to what you listed (mostly), I dug the LPs below. Based on your taste, I suspect you'd like a lot of them. All on vinyl, bar a few CD only (e.g., Big Star). Fav is probably Tindersticks, and a really dark LP - God Machine. Swell were terrific, if underrated.... anyhow, thanks again. Dinosaur Jr - Where you been? The Auteurs - New Wave God Machine - Scenes from the Second Story Autohaze - Mild Steel Flat Suede - s/t Pavement - Westing by Sextant and Musket Polyphemus - Scrapbook of Madness Screaming Trees - Sweet Oblivion Sundial - Libertine Swell - Well? Red House Painters - III Bailter Space - Robot World Ultramarine - United Kingdom Nightblooms - 24 Days at Catastrofe Café Tindersticks - s/t 1st Acetone - Cindy Archers of Loaf - Icky Mettle Seam - Problem with me Big Star - Columbia live Afghan Whigs - Gentlemen Cocteau Twins - Calendar Café Buffalo Tom - Big Red Letter Day Paul Weller - Wildwood Curve - Cuckoo Yo La Tengo - Painful Scrawl - Velvet Hammer
Hi Steve! Moving sucks but you’ve had a nice landing. If I make my way to Steve Carlson country, I’d take that second chair. Flipper! Wow! I loved the photos Steve from the VC channels.
Steve with with Sheryl Crow in mind, have you ever heard the 1999 album I am Shelby Lynne by Shelby Lynne. Its like Sheryl Crow meets Dusty in Memphis with a slightly less stadium rock production just been reissued, think you would like it. Also a big band in the UK at the moment the band Ezra Collective, a bit afro beat, latin, jazz, cuban, neo soul another I think that you may go for. I realise neither of these are from 1993..At this stage just trying to empty your bank account!
I have a total of 7 vinyl albums from 1993. A couple of good ones. Martin Newell "The Greatest Living Englishman" (produced by Andy Partridge and a pop masterpiece), The Juliet Letters (Elvis Costello) which I really like, "Get A Grip by Aerosmith and The Muffs self titled album (which I only picked up 2 days ago). All of the 90s seem to be a pretty spare part of the collection. I guess I have to get out to a store and start plumping up this decade!
Great video Steve....and a very very big thank you for the shout out....greatly appreciated...plus belated congratulations on the arrival of your grandaaughter. Have 4....not a grandson in sight ...but as long as everyone is healthy....btw my name is James...major faux paux on my part for anyone starting a youtube channel :)). Will continue to watch your output including your podcasts with Jim...and learn as I go. Thank you again.
My short list Driving N Cryin/Smoke album( Great grunge band) Bobby D/World Gone Wrong U2/Zoo ropa Kinks/Phobia..I don't care for the Kinks 80s& 90s Output..but I dug this album Etienne pronounced...AY Tee En
Morphine ,huh?Another Boston band Steve .................................................. In... gee I don't know what year it was,Nirvana made an album called Bleach which is superfine.
Great list, Steve. A lot of albums we have in common, and some I have never heard. My top 10 might feature the debut albums from Suede, Björk, Tindersticks.... PJ Harvey's Rid Of Me (sophomore album), Giant Steps from The Boo Radleys.... Such a good year for music!
Hi Steve - Souvalki by Slowdive was my favorite album of 1993. The cd has bonus tracks including a nice cover of Some Velvet Morning. Oregon / Ohio St. Was a classic & Oregon intentionally put a 12th man on the field in the waning seconds to take a 5 yard penalty but run time off the clock. Ohio St. fans aren't happy but thats the rule.
Great bunch of albums Steve 💯. Scofield hand jive YES YES YES. I love Scofield. He paired with Govt Mule, it's called Sco-Mule I recommend it. Colorado looks good on you 😊
Scofield was new to me Greg but wow did I like this album. It was so upbeat and positive Jazz after the early 70s went away for me but this we new and refreshing.
Well, if I had known that you needed Radiohead "Pablo Honey" for the video, I would have lent it to you. Love The Breeders "Last Spalsh"....definitely one of my personal favorites. The original Collective Soul album was their best I think, but it seems that the original copies did not have a great sound to them....do you know if the reissues were any better? I need to check out that John Scoffield album. I really lost track of World Party beyond "Private Revolution", so I have a lot of catching up to do there. Great choice and nice surprise to see Stereolab show up there, that one tends to get overlooked, but it's one I would pick up if I ever ran across it. Love the jazzy trip-hop of Us3. Swervedriver....now there is one that I used to be interested in and have forgotten about. I remember watching "Duel" on TV way back whenever with my father. Neither one of us knew anything about it, but we were glued to the TV as were so many other people.....the beginnings of Spielberg for me and I remembered his name and watched hit after hit come out with his name attached...and I thought that I had been the one to discover him LOL! Pearl Jam "Vs" also a personal favorite....love it! Not sure if I would put your #1 at that spot on my list, but it would be one of the top 10 for sure. Hope to see Live "Throwing Copper" on your 1994 list....hint, hint.
Mike wasn’t Duel great. We were so creeped out by it. It seemed all to real and plausible. So much tension. It was amazing I do recommend that Scolfield album. It was more of a blind buy for me but it was so upbeat and catchy. I found it on clearance on Amazon for 30% off but that of course is in the US. 90s had a lot of fantastic music which is why I enjoy doing these
Hi Seve, great selection of 90's albums. I can't give you any greetings from Miss Rotty anymore as she died on Monday, 1 day after her 15th birthday. It's life. anyway, take care and enjoy the music.
So sorry Peter, a pet becomes part of the family. Never easy to lose one. I know she had been sick which was difficult. Maybe she will meet Kat now in another place
Not bad, I hit 4 of the albums Morten. You probably have a lot of stuff from the 90s. I use to have a huge 90s CD collection. Now I just buy in vinyl what I really like.
The year I graduated from HS. Chimerma, Lughnasa. Cyan Daze and Catch Me best songs on it. i wouldn't have thought any of those except perhaps the last 2.
1993 was a good year for you obviously...me, gotta be honest, most of your choices are not my bag, and at least two of those groups I absolutely loathe, but hey, that's what makes the music world go round - if you're happy and loving your stuff like I'm happy and loving mine, then it all works out, right? BTW, Manhattan Transfer did a killer cover of US3's "Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia) on their 2018 album "The Junction", you should check it out. Have a good week, Professor!
This is a shock, you have survived this long not having all the great music that I recommend. Interesting about Manhattan doing that cover TC. I don’t know that they were still even around
Steve, gosh! There’s too many good albums that you’re showing! Lots of memories! How come music was so amazing then?? The musical landscape was changing! You really listen to lots of amazing music!
Michael I don’t see a lot of people talking about music from the 90s but to be fair I watch a lot of the 50 and over channels lol. Doing these has been fun for me to explore this music and the great musical decade of the 90s
"Is it Halloween or is is Christmas" that's what I ask myself in the stores when I see Halloween and Christmas decorations in the same aisles. I did a search of top 200 albums of 1993 and I only have 1, Sheryl Crow, I guess 93' wasn't my year for music.
lol, no Black Oak Arkansas in 93 I guess Don. I was heavy into music buying CDs, problems of working retail and getting all the new stuff. Yes Nightmare Before Christmas creates some tensions as people argue what type of music it really is lol
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 I didn’t recognise any of your 90’s. That’s what’s cool. We’re close to same age but listened to totally different bands. I’m going 1977 tomorrow. Take care art
Morning Steve... I been told that any vinyl from the 90s is kinda rare. I might only have 3 or 4 albums from the 90s myself. It just wasn't my decade. Cheers.
Confrontation is on the US release only, it also isn’t by TD. Mann asked them to do a cover of Floyd’s Comfortably Numb, but they said no, so instead he asked Craig Safan
Just beautiful, Steve. Money Jungle is fantastic. Duke was a true all-rounder when it came to jazz. He could play any style. Looks like you had a great time with your grandson.
Mark the Ellington album was a real surprise. I never expected that from Elllington. He really knew how to embrace what was going on in jazz. Mingus was fantastic on it. I still try to get some jazz at the right price
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 need to try Forever Young Records the next time you’re there. In Josey’s They have a Bill’s Record section. I have been to his store prior to his passing. Interesting character. No prices On the records. Told you what they cost at the register
No Kidding, that much for a T Shirt, wow. Oh wonder why the Amazon Guy wanted to buy it off my back lol. Denver record show, I guess I need to work another year Chance, sigh
Aloha Steve! Oh, Colorado has so much Beauty! Sometimes it's worth it to go off-road with an ill prepared vehicle lol… otherwise, where would the adventure be? BTW I'm pretty sure money jungle was the first Tone poet I ever got. It was the record I heard about but never saw in the wild I'm glad blue note saw fit to treat it to such a release. There was always something intriguing to me about that combination of old-school Ellington being pushed out to the boundaries a little by those young turks, Mingus and roach. It certainly doesn't disappoint. I love it! Enjoy the record fair!
Tony, hard to match the beauty of Hawaii, I do love those islands Colorado keeps unveiling more hidden beauty but an off road vehicle would be nice lol. The Ellington album blew me away, it was so good and was amazing how Ellington kept adapting to what was going on. I did not expect it to be as good as it was
Sherry, the traveler of the world! Hope the hurricane did not cause you any problems. Ellington album was a huge surprise to me, really glad I grabbed that one. So many musical surprises out there
Beautiful Colorado! I really miss that place, probably more than any other place I've lived. Best Bets, nice heavy garage sound just like you said. How do you say that again....is it Gluts or Gluts? Ha ha, that's the advantage of the printed word, you don't know whether I'm saying it right or not. I actually think I like that one too, but I'd have to hear the whole album a few times to make sure. That Ellington-Mingus-Roach team up would be one worth having, and I have to say I'm usually not looking for any Ellington records, but that sounds quite good. Sunflower Bean kind of has that dreamy Cocteau Twins feel to it if only without the trademark harmonies. Great find with "Thief", and just like you said, you went back and got it. I think it is one of TD's must-haves. I wasn't shaming you for not getting it, I actually thought you must have had it already LOL.
lol Mike, one of those peer pressure VC members. I know Tangerine Dream but never have explored them. I do t plan to jump into that rabbit hole but I will try some more of their music. The Ellington record was amazing, much better than I expected it to be Mike. I keep teasing you with Colorado. lol. Your Welcome!
Happy Canadian Thanksgiving to you and Patty and the grandkids Steve. Great scenery, the aspens must be turning by now. Some cool buys that I need to check out. Duke doesn’t get enough love in the VC. Good luck at the record show. Cheers.
Jack, the record show was a failure to my wallet once again. I need to be chained up at home on those weekends lol. I was shocked how good that Ellington album was, I never expected it to be that good. Colorado keeps delivering beautiful scenery, amazing place
Hey Steve. Great scenery to start us off! Love that Duke Album with Max Roach & Mingus! The Thief soundtrack! So good. I dropped my first weekend video ever yesterday. Enjoy the record show! Cheers
Record Show Bobby was not easy on my wallet lol. I was not sure about the Ellington album but the price was right. So glad I got it. Showed how in tune Ellington was with what was happening in jazz
Hey Steve. Beautiful scenery at the beginning of the video! You might need a Jeep for those improvised road adventures. I hope you had good luck at the record show. Have a great week!
You probably have hiked to that lake. I’m not sure how you got around some of those roads. Incredible scenery as you well know Russ. Record show, well I will need to work a little longer now
Hi Steve - My two favorite Tangerine 🍊 Dream soundtracks are Sorcerer & Risky Business & two very good films 🎥 as well. Great effort by the young Tigers 🐅 against Cleveland. As a Yankees fan glad we don't have to deal with them !
David, that grand slam home run was such a gut punch, and off of our best pitcher. Oh well, who would have predicted they would go that far. Go Lions! Risky Business was Tangerine dream, no kidding. I’m not going down their rabbit hole but I would buy a few more
