A important thing to mention about "early Digital recordings" is that even if they were classified as DDD, they were not even close to being fully digital. What they used was magnetic tape machines that had Digital technology in them to process the music. So what you're really getting is actually half Analog & half Digital. Once they have the Digital recording tape, they would make Analog Master Tapes out of it and use them for Vinyl which is why those albums can still sound organic with a fairly wide soundstage, more so than the CD regardless of the album not being fully Analog. Even if it's not the exact proper comparison, just look at Attack of the Clones for example. That on the other hand was fully Digital in terms of the way it was shot but was released to the vast majority of theatres with 35MM prints. The DVDs obviously would reflect the image of the original files far better, and yet many many people far preferred the 35mm prints that were made from it. Just goes to show that a entirely speculative based format with a mandatory number of resolution that brickwalls higher resolution should not always be the way forward outside of easy use & archiving.

I'm curious, is the Doors' "Celebration of the Lizard" on my 40th anniversary CD the same one that was deleted for the initial release? If so, 17 minutes feels like a crazy amount of material not to use on the final album, except the lyrics sheet.

The studio version that finally turned up on the Legacy best of and 40th anniversary CDs was a work in progress version. The band never felt they nailed it in studio sessions and the song was unfortunately dropped at some point and changed the overall album. In live versions they refined it more and it has a different feeling to the studio demo version. I think had they kept at it the song would have had the polish of the studio with the rawness of the live versions. The whole album feel would have also been different as some of the bigger hits likely wouldn’t have been included.

In that case, "Celebration of the Lizard" and "Albinoni's Adagio in G Minor" easily makes 'Sun' the best CD for bonus tracks, truly giving us a taste of what the album could have been. Shame 'Strange Days' had to draw the short straw for interesting additional content. Oh, and the unipak design *is* dreadful. My first taste of it was the perfect replica of the mono 'Beatles For Sale', and it's not any easier getting the disc out when it's CD sized.

@@KevinStriker unipaks suck. There’s nothing good about them.

I have heard from many others that due to the cultural differences in Japan that they cut off most of the bass and low end compared to the US,UK, German and other Western countries. How exactly would you describe the Japanese Rio to the American Rio? I have also heard that the UK pressings heavily reduce the volume of the panting heard in Hungry like the Wolf.

I see you organise albums like books, by surname. I just go the lazy route and organise them first name first (like iTunes) because I've been to too many music stores where the staff will file Jethro Tull under "T" or Pink Floyd under "F". Bands can be mistaken for one person, or there are artists whose band is named after them (Steve Miller Band) who I would also agonise where to put them.

I go by last name for artists and first name if it’s a band. That’s how I’ve always seen it done in most stores and what made sense in my own organizing mindset I guess. As long as it makes sense to you that’s the best organization. When it comes to movies I get really specific: favorite directors, actors and series get sections and everything else is by release year.

$40 isn’t a bad price at all! I hope you’ll be pleased with it. If you’ve never heard this album on an original non-US vinyl release it’s an absolute knockout!!!!
