I disagree about buying new over vintage turntables. Often times, buying a used, older turntable can be cost effective and a really thrilling way to connect with the past. A broken stylus or faulty belt can easily be replaced. Also, some people, like myself, enjoy the aesthetic of an older machine. Not knocking new turntables, just have a differing view on your tip about buying new over old.

Bought an LP120 for my girlfriend for christmas based, in part, on your recommendation. GOODNESS vinyl can sound great! I had no idea how good they can sound, compared to just slappin' on some Spotify. Granted, the ritual of on/off, don't touch that, brush and be careful, gives you a whole other respect and sense of the fact that you just put on music. But still. Thank you.

Don't let this discourage you completely from buying older turntables. I got an Audio Technica LP-60 for $60 and it had a tracking issue that caused it to skip all over the record, and it sounded very flat. I Returned it and replaced it with a free Technics SL-Q300 from my uncle's garage and it sounded warm, rich, and much better than the lp-60. Older turntables can be awesome provided that they are from a good brand and have all the bells and whistles like anti-skate and a counter weight. If you do need a new stylus or belt, they're very cheap on Ebay and my turntable happened to be direct drive with an upgraded cartridge from Shure. Cheap turntables have always been bad, so don't buy an older turntable if it was low end when it came out.
@ccadam
@ccadam 3 года назад
AT LP 60 are fairly cheaply made, only sounding better than those suitcase ceramic cartridge plastic platter turntables having a magnetic cartridge. They have similar sort of tonearms though.
@Curling_Rack
@Curling_Rack 7 лет назад
a used Technics 1200/1210 is a good way to go. Most record stores know a place that doctors/tune up use Technics MK models. not so much for other brands....... u can also mod them to self ground on the turntable body, add more coils to the direct motor, swap out the rca cables, adjust the pitch to +/- 50% instead of 8% lol
@brucewilco
@brucewilco 4 года назад
Don’t buy a Crosley suitcase-style turntable, absolutely! However, I love my Crosley C8 - heavy plinth and platter, decent AT cartridge, interchangeable headshells, adjustable tracking weight and anti-skate, and, best of all, the sound is marvelous.

I totally disagree with ur tip to buy only new turntables. When ure on a budget 100 bucks is a kinda sweet spot, unfortunately there aren't any good new turntables so in order to achieve best sound quality buying used turntable is a clever step. Many used turntables have much better specs (for example - wow and flutter on old japanese turntables

I agree. The best turntable I ever bought is my current Technics one from the late 70s/early 80s. What makes it so great is that it is a quartz direct drive. I have never had a turntable Be more accurate on speeds. I bought it for $25. I bought an $8 grounding cable off of eBay and I am set. It's fully automatic. Absolutely love it.

Most vintage turntables I've gotten my hands on usually only needed a new stylus or a new cartridge or a new belt. As they were built to last, it's very rare for the motors on the vintage turntables to go bad, especially since most used an AC motor. Even then, oiling the motor nurses it back to health (the SAE-20 oil costs less than $3). Most of the issues are a missing cartridge or stylus, or the belt missing. An AT3600 can be obtained for less than $25 (or the AT92E if it's a P-Mount). For belt drives, the belts can be obtained for less than $20 (as long as they're the same size, it should work). Modern turntables use a DC motor, and these tend to wear out faster than an AC motor. If you know where to look for, you can find a reliable vintage turntable for dirt cheap, and 75% of the time, will be in excellent working condition (such as a Yamaha PF-50 direct drive turntable, which only cost me $8, only needed a cartridge).

Hey Vinyl Eyezz! Thanks so much for your tips! I commented on a previous video basically adamant that I just wanted to get my brother a portable turn table for practicality. I'm so glad I got no response to that. I get it now, not ruining your records is the most important part of it all. I got my brother that Audio-Technica LP60 because of you and some Edifier 4" Active Bookshelf Speakers to go with it. Simple clean cost efficient set up! From my brother and me, Thanks and keep up what you're doing!

Think about a vintage turn table, the ones that stood the test of time. Dual 505's are solid. Thorens as well. Like the td 160. Only the design as changed over the years. Technique hasn't changed much. Walk into a yardsale or a thriftshop once in a while, maybe u find something for pennies on the dollar. Something of considerable worth and quality. Might need some sprucing up. So know what you're getting yourself into first. But it could be worth the trouble. Have fun.

About the counterweight, the lp 60 is an exeption, Because it uses a spring instead of a counterweight to adjust the tracking force. If you look at the back of the tonearm, you'll see it. and the tracking force is fixed in 3.5 grams, wich is safe for your loved records!

Jarrett: A request if you're interested: A historic video on the the 'Crosley" of my time -the "BSR" turntable / automatic record changer. This was the turntable included in almost every all-in-one cheap shelf system of the late 1970s-late 1980s.. These things had heavy-tracking ceramic cartridges and were all hard plastic rim and idler-wheel drive beasts that tended to grind records to dust after so many plays. Just an idea. Anyway, I guess every era had it's cheapo burden to bear!
@johnb6723

They could only be used for mono records - a stereo record needs to be played with a 0.5 to 0.7mil stylus, unlike a mono record that could be played with the thicker stylus.

Tracking needs to be weighed where the needle will actually sit on the record. If the needle sits higher on the scale when being weighed, it will weigh more in grams than actually sitting on the record.

Jared you'd be happy with upgrading that pre-amp on the AT, you can get something like a Pro-ject for $100 or if you spend more you can go tubes.

Or you could a much better-sounding Schiit Mani 2 phono preamp (built in the USA) for $120. Reasonably priced tube preamps tend to be noisy.
@socksumi

There are many design criteria that go into making a turntable sound good. Everything from the quality of the pickup cartridge and the arm to the quality of materials used in the turntable's construction. In a nut shell you want rigid, non-resonant parts that generate the least amount of and noise and the best isolation from external and unwanted noise and vibration. Such a goal requires everything be built of the best materials including the platter, mat, main bearing, motor, arm, head shell, plinth and mounting platform. All parts must also be optimized to work together to the goal of allowing unimpeded the extraction of information from a record groove.

You want to add Jarret. A few 7" ep's play at 33/3 rpm. For example tge "Work, Rest And Play" ep by the Band called Madness i had as a teen. I also had an 7" ep by The Stranglers as well whicch pkayed at 33/3 rpm. And talking of The Stranglers. If you are into the British New Wave/Post Punk genre. Give them a listen. Standout albums called Black And White and No More Heroes and The Raven. i actually think you will like their music. Well worth your time. Enjoy.

@jasonreimer5736 7 лет назад
I would say another thing to consider is what type of cartridge(I.e. a moving magnet or a moving coil) your intending to get as it will affect what type of pre-amp you need as moving coil creates a much smaller voltage. also I would disagree on your point that vintage equipment is a poor choice, although it is a bit more maintanace heavy sometimes I find you can usually get a much better deal with older tables and they usually just need the cartrige replaced. For example: I spent 50 bucks on a kenwood 350 (1985 direct drive with a 40 pound marble base) it came with a grace 704 tone arm(1970) and I replaced the cartridge with a ortofon 2m blue. So for $300 I made out with a turn table of much higher quality then anything you could buy new

If you all are new to buying records and phonographs, then you all ought to get yourself a Electrohome Signature. Those are good phonographs for beginners. They are built out of hard and thick wood, the turntable platters do not wobble, the sound quality doesn't have to be on full blast to get the greatest quality from the phonograph; the stereo is excellent, the lids are not flimsy and more.

Hi Jarrett, you mention the hotly debated topic of 'new vs vintage' turntables. What are your thoughts on the similar issue of new reissues vs high quality original records of an album? As in, is it worth getting an early (good quality) pressing of say Led Zeppelin I, or should you just go ahead and get a brand new reissue?
@johnbuford8715
@johnbuford8715 5 лет назад
Ok you failed to mention that most if the newer pre amps and receivers can not handle turn table out put. They need a special equalization. Unless you have one with a built in preamp. You can either get a stand alone TT pre amp or use an older preamp receiver that can equalize the TT. There is also a third type of TT where the platter is rim driven.

i think itz a decision of passion and endurance of your hobby... i was in the same situation back in 1999. I could have bought a semi good turntable, but i wanted to have something really good that lasts for a long time and has quality. so i ended up with the technics 1210, and of course had to pay the bigger price for that. and well itz 17 years later and i still have no problems... i wonder if an audiotechnica 120 will hold this long, as the material feel isnt that great compared to other players, although itz a good choice for beginners. also its a haptical thing: itz like buying a Kia or BMW. they feel different from the material and handling. also pioneer has some good turntables out there, but as i said, if you really want to put 100 in your hobby, you once buy a little bit expensive hardware and you are good for long time + having great sound and feel all that time. itz worth it.. you just have to decide on yourself, how much the hobby means to you ;)

Please keep in mind that this is a video for those who are fairly new to the hobby. It's not perfect, and quite a few things are dumbed-down, but overall, it's a good video to refer to someone who asks you about getting into LPs and records in general. Everyone who's already involved in the hobby to any extent probably has numerous pre-conceptions that other established hobbyists may not agree with. To wit: I like the idea of a fully automatic turntable for my family room system - everyone doesn't have my touch for cuing up albums. Because of this, I gravitate towards vintage tables since they are more likely to have this feature. But that's just me. Thanks, Jarrett.

You do know that Crowsley that's made by Pro-Ject right? But thats beside the fact, even on the lower end models the tracking force has to be really high like 20 grams to notice any sort of distortion.

I own a PL-990 Pioneer turntable. I haven't had any complaints about it but I did buy it on November 21st a day after my birthday, so I haven't been using it for long but my records seem fine out of the 12 I own 11 of them are original pressings and they seem to be playing fine. The PL-990 is definitely a good choice for a starter turntable.

I find the Technics direct drive turntables are not noisy at all. I have a couple direct drive turntables that work really well. I believe that a separate preamp will give you better results, in my opinion. Also, your LP stylus is typically .7 mil and your 78 stylus is 3 mil. If you use a .7 mil stylus on a shellac 78 rpm record, it will be very noisy. Also, if you use a 3 mil stylus on a 33 or 45 record, the needle may jump out of the groove on heavy bass hits. Just an additional note, if you get a separate cartridge for your shellac and vinyl records and you don't have 78 rpm on your turntable, you can download Audacity for free and once the program is running, you can set your turntable speed to be either 33 or 45 rpm and then look for the Effect and in the dropdown menu there will be a setting for change speed. Once that's open, you can convert the file from your original speed to what it would sound like at 78 rpm. It works well.

The Pyle PLTTB1 Turntable goes for around $80 on Amazon and is by far the best value when it come to the new crap you can buy these days however I did change the cartridge right away. It doesn't have a built in pre-amp so it's perfect for my vintage stereo receiver (Pioneer SX-1250 "The Beast") and it has all the options that you want for high fidelity sound other than the direct drive. All the turntables you mentioned are far to expensive for what you're actually getting for my taste. For the $300+ range I would expect at a minimum a semi auto turntable. (Even though the "Audio Technica LP60" is fully automatic and goes for around $100, I don't consider it a real turntable because the tone-arm weight is not adjustable so your stuck using the stock cartridge among other reasons.)

What about other brands like Sony, Ricatech and Thorens? I think the latter one has one of the most expensive record players, pricing at a thousand and more euros! I was also close to byuing a Crosley so thank goodness I watched your video.

Something you forgot is the platter is upgradable on audiophile (or belt drive) tables. As you have seen on my Instagram (DaveTheStalker), I have the Acryl-It acrylic platter on my Pro-Ject Debut Carbon. I played have a song on the original metal platter and felt slipmat. I play records directly on the acrylic platter and they sound fan-freaking-tastic. So, redo the video, just kidding! But seriously, this may be consideration for your next video. The $400 entry level audiophile table, climbing up to the $700 (usually a cartridge and bearings upgrade, to the $1k and $1500 table to the $10,000 table. I honestly look forward to this sort of video.

The standard glass platter has a not-so-nice ring (resonance) to it, so I got the Esprit upgrade, which also includes external speed control (pushbutton 33/45). A 3 mm Achromat would be the next logical upgrade ($100).
@davethestalker
@davethestalker 7 лет назад
Martin Tousignant the acrylic (Acryl-It) platter from Pro-Jett, the one that makes the Debut Carbon Esprit an "Esprit" is not glass, it's acrylic, a plastic. Which does not require or need a dust and hair collecting slip mat. I'm eyeballing the Music Hall MMF5.3 WH (white) as my next table. It comes with an metal or maybe an MDF platter. Which I won't even use. I'll use the same platter I'm using now. I had the chance to get a Rega turntable with a glass platter. It looked pretty, but resonance was surely an issue! The Pro-Ject Acrylic-It was $125 and well worth it!
@1mctous
@1mctous 7 лет назад
I have the Acryl-It platter and am quite happy with it. Pro-Ject suggests putting records directly on this platter, which I have found has mixed results. I would agree that wool and felt mats collect a lot of dust, so I still prefer direct contact. I would bet that the Achromat material doesn't absorb so much dust, but it certainly absorbs vibration!
@davethestalker
@davethestalker 7 лет назад
The only difference I have noticed that show mixed results are not because of the platter, but due to inconsistent production of the record. Some artists are quite lazy and use the same mix from a CD instead of remixing it for vinyl. A cd on vinyl usually has no bottom end and the soundstage is very narrow. Stereo separation is also lacking. One of the best benefits of a direct contact playing surface is how easy it is to clean. Every couple of sides, I'll use my carbon fiber brush and give it a good cleaning to remove any static, especially during the winter. I'm intrigued by this Achromat you're mentioning. I hope it's nothing like the big thick Pioneer mat that fits the LP120 or Technics 1200. That thing collected gunk too!
@1mctous
@1mctous 7 лет назад
For those who still insist that digital retains all of the essential detail, I would place the finest digital piano and a middle-of-the-road acoustic piano side-by-side. The acoustic sounds much more robust and complex. Using the CD master wastes much of the LP's unique capabilities.

Some older all-in-ones, AKA Music Centres, are perfectly okay for records. Some had magnetic cartridges, and counterweights or spring balances. New all-in-ones, like the Crapophone you showed, yup, avoid at all costs ! For an unexperienced newbie, probably new machine is the way to go. For an old fart like me who repairs old ones, it's easier !

I think the best option to buy good Turntables cheap are Flea Markets. Last year i got a beautiful Vintage CEC BD-2000 Turntable for 25€ and it has no problems at all. You have to be lucky tho and should always check the condition of the Turntable (or ask the seller how many times it has been used, etc..) Your best way to find out if the Turntable is any good is to do a Google search.

@writerpatrick
@writerpatrick 6 лет назад
If you are buying vintage, avoid BSR. The belts on some old drives do tend to last for some time. If anything, you may need to adjust the speed. It's usually the needles and cartridges that will cost the most. (The needles can cost as much as a new cartridge.) There are some decent cheap newer turntables around. A lot of it comes down to the needle/cartridge being used.
@writerpatrick
@writerpatrick 6 лет назад
I should also add to be very careful when playing modern (90s+) records on vintage (50s) turntables. You can scratch the record since they're not built for them.

Enjoyed the info! You make some great points and having separate components is the best. Now, there are good reasons for getting a vintage turntable. Some of the older direct drives can be refurbished to play just fine after some cleaning and replacing or fixing some parts. I'm currently trying to find an older Technics to refurb as a project to later set up in my living room with an extra preamp I have. IMHO a turntable is best without a built-in preamp as I've mentioned before that I've ripped mine out of my AT-LP120 a few years ago. Good plugs for the U-Turn and Project and they are good ones to consider.

I dont really agree with "AVOID Vintage", because that is the best Turntable you can find. I dont agree even with the two types of motors, because for Noise is the opposite, "Belt Drives" is a little noisy, the "Direct Drive" is very silence. I have 4 Turntable from the '80s and still works perfectly. Technics SL-DD22 (Direct Drive) Technics SL-D303 (Direct Drive) Technics SL-J11 (Belt Drive) Technics SL-B200 (Belt Drive) (Im a fan of Technics, i you didnt notice yet XD )

I'll add one: Make sure the speed can be fine-tuned. I have an Ion TTUSB (an old one from 2007) and after watching dozens of vinyl vids on YT, I decided to test the speed by synching a track on one of my records with the same recording on Spotify. Sure enough, my turntable turns too fast, with no way to fine-tune it. It's frustrating.

You mentioned that All-in-One players are to be left alone because of the combination of preamp/amp/speakers. Then you mentioned before that (which i already was aware of) that Crosleys damage records. Do the Victrola players (as shown in the picture you provided during that segment) damage records like the Crosleys do? I've looked for reviews from people and no one has said anything about their albums being damaged.
@vinyleyezz
@vinyleyezz 7 лет назад
+Logan Prosperie if those victrola all in one players have a tracking force of over 4 grams, then they're definitely going to damage your records. You can check the weight with a digital gram scale!
@LuterofromTx
@LuterofromTx 7 лет назад
Vinyl Eyezz i know that anything over 3.5 is potentially dangerous, but i cannot find a spec sheet and i don't think i have a digital scale for weights that small! Good thing i have a Sony player with an estimated 3.5g tracking force.
@stevesstuff1450
@stevesstuff1450 6 лет назад
@@LuterofromTx: The vinyl used to make records is designed to be tracked at up to 6-7 grams. 4 grams was 'conventional' years ago on the standard BSR/Garrard type players found of the time, and they've never damaged any of my old records from back then! The only real reason that Crosleys and all those other branded players us the same basic cheap motor board, arm, and platter may damage records is because the headshell & cartridge are badly out of alignment with record groove, and the cheap and nasty sapphire stylus they come with, that wears very quickly. If you do have one of these type players, at least get a replacement diamond stylus for it.
