In this video I show you around and talk about all of the features and the specification of the Record Power Coronet Herald midi wood turning lathe. I provide an overview and review of the lathe.
I recently purchased the Record Power Coronet Herald woodturning lathe and I thought it would be useful to show you its features and specifications as well as tell you what it is about the lathe that helped me to choose this lathe. In thi overview and review I attempt to cover all aspects and specifications.

I just bought one of those. After some research including watching this video, I decided that it was a good upgrade from my mini-lathe that I have been using for about 3 years. Very happy with it so far - very stable and quiet. I didn't get the legs, but placed it on a solid table (which I had made). I still haven't bolted the lathe to the table, and I am having no problems (I haven't turned unbalanced logs yet). The only disappointment so far is that the tailstock doesn't have self-extracting feature. I wanted to remove the live center today - what a pain. The knockout bar they provide is stupid - it has a bent end so it's hard to give it a knock with a mallet (don't look for the one you lost, John). After I managed to knock out the live center, the knockout bar got stuck in the hollow spindle. Grrr.

Im glad you are enjoying your purchase. Yes I agree on the tailstock and I have fed that back to the manufacturer. I did fine mine in the end but never use It as a knock out bar. I would recommend to make one yourself.

@@JohnClothier I finally found the knockout bar from my old lathe, and it's doing the job, better than the bar supplied with the Coronet Herald. I think that if I knew that it doesn't have a self extracting tailstock I would have bought another lathe. Maybe most people use this feature rarely, but I need it quite regularly. I change between the standard live centre, a bull nose live centre and a Jacobs chuck a couple of times a week. A month on, I can say that I love the lathe but hate the tailstock. I left a review on Record Power's Web site saying that,. As expected, my review didn't get posted.

Hey... Record Power published my review on their Web site, including the criticism about lack of self-extracting tail stock. Maybe the penny will drop and they will fix this problem (at least to me).

Came with a free SC3 but wasn't the correct thread size and used an adapter, have since sold that and stuck with the SC3 purely as I liked the size....did think of the SC4 but I liked the basic open style of the SC3

Ok. I use the sc4. I prefer it being closed so as not to get loads of muck in there.

Thanks John and through your video I actually have bought one and I love it, I filled the legs with kiln dried sand, the only fault I have is that the tailstock is slightly catching at the join to the bed extension but no great problem. I think it is a wonderful lathe and the smoothness of the motor in incredible cheers John and I hope we meet up sometime. Keith

Thanks Keith. When I attached mine I used a straight edge and clamped it all together before putting in the bolts. I haven’t experienced any catching with that method.

Great review, John - I found it just after I'd actually bought the lathe so I'm pleased to confirm that I have made a really good buy. One thing I think you may have got wrong in the review is that you've implied that pressing the 'pulley' button on the controller changes the pulley in use but in fact it doesn't. I can't find anything about it in the manual, but as far as I can tell the button is there only so that you can select an indicator of which pulley you're using. The speed range shown changes, but the chosen pulley doesn't. Apart from that though, I entirely agree with everything you've said - a great machine at a good price.

Thanks for this video John, as you know I'm looking at upgrading in the near future and this has answered a lot of questions for me. A 5 year guarantee is a big plus too. I'm struggling to justify spending twice as much on a well known rivals machine.

Rob Hall thanks Rob. Yes I should have mentioned the guarantee it's a real plus for sure. I agree it's hard to justify doubling the money to get the same features. Yes they would be bigger, heavier etc but do we need that? Maybe one day but not yet

Hi Mr. Clothier... I expect your pleased with that...and your right about iron...there's no substitute for weight and you'll notice this when turning things that are out of square/balance etc.... One thing I'd like you to do with this though: Get a can of light spray oil and give the bed, headstock & tailstock a oil spray before using the airbrush on work mounted in it... Any over spray from the airbrush should just wipe off easily then...😉

Thanks Glenn. Thanks for the tip. I do use a wd40 ptfe spray on the bed. It helps with the banjo sliding too. I also put a scrap of pen on the bed when I remember. Especially when using products like Yorkshire grit

Great review John. I'm sure you will use almost all the features on there over time. I've still never used my lathe with the head turned but the length is great, especially even for small items to get the tail stock out the way.

Thanks Paul. I have used it turned already, even with a small bowl its nice to be able to get a better standing position without leaning over the lathe for hollowing it out. I can get a great length now as well and you are right being able to move the tailstock out the way without having to remove it is great.

Nice video thanks I’ve had one of these for nearly a year now and it’s great I work from my shed and have limited space but the swivelling headstock gives me much more room to work. I do however think that the legs should come with it as part of the package, as I work off a bench I also had to buy the mount feet which also are sold separately. But still a great little lathe

Thanks Sean yes it's a fantastic lathe for those with a small space and big dreams I understand what you say but I guess if they included the feet and you wanted the legs you would be paying for something you didn't need. Either way the price would end up being more and I think they have done very well to keep it to the sub 1000

@@JohnClothierI'm sure, it could be the right thing for me. Do you have any experiences in fixing the lathe on a workbench? As far as I know the legs are an extra and not included in the 999€, that the machine costs in germany. (But I know, there is a pair of feet to screw it on a workbench.)

No sorry. I've only used it on the legs. There are offers from time to time where the legs are included. Not sure about in Germany though

I would love to have a rotating head stock. I have used them and it's great for sanding inside bowls, boxes. Also for seeing into the bottoms while turning with just a little rotation works well. A lot easier on the body. Not useful for spindle turning.

Agreed Lee. I am most looking forward to having the rotating headstock for hollowing. I always struggled to see what I was doing but now I wont. lol no not so good for spindle work

Thanks Allan. It does a bit but only on the fastest belt setting. Which you wouldnt use with something big anyway. Ive turned some heavy wood and its coped fine

I bought Ccoronet at Harrogate last year but I have only just assembled it, as I had a leak in the roof. There are three things, one it definitely needs the bed extension, two, the handwheel, on the headstock, comes loose if I am rotating it clockwise to put a chuck on but is fine when taking a chuck off, which is effectively tightening the handwheel. Third, I have been unable to change belts because, although opening the door to the belts and loosening the motor tension lever, the motor does not move. Any ideas. Thanks James

Hi James. Yea a bed extension is very useful for this lathe. I mostly use it to slide the tail stock out of the way rather than actually turning longer items. With the motor have you done the bottom bolt up to much? It should move pretty easy. I believe there is a grub screw on the hand wheel but I could be wrong. It should come undone that's for sure! Maybe worth dropping record a message about it

@@JohnClothier Thanks John. Actually Recordpower set the machine up for Sue Harker to demonstrate on and they did change belts. So I bought it, run in by Sue and got it cheap at the Harrogate Show last November. 😂

Hi John, I am German and was looking for reviews of the Coronet Herald but found almost nothing. I have a small lathe on a table. I want to turn larger bowls and vases and am looking for something bigger. I'm afraid the Herald will vibrate a lot when turning large pieces overhead because of its low weight. Can you confirm this or is my fear unfounded? I first thought of a Stratos XL but the price is enormous for a hobby turner who occasionally turns something nice. Can you recommend the herald or should I choose a heavy machine? Greetings and thank you.

It is a small lathe and that does need to be considered but I have turned some heavy wood on it and it has been ok. you just have to take it slow to start. It all really comes down to money. I doubt you will find a machine as capable for the money. if you can afford more though you will get better

Have you tried mounting a bowl on on to a wormscrew with the Herald, Recordpower told me that I only need to hand tighten a chuck on to the spindle but when I attempt to wind a blank onto the wormscrew, I need to lock the spindle and that simply unwinds the left hand threaded handwheel and it cannot be done. The only way I can do it is to put the chuck into a vice and then wind on the blank. Thanks

James .Pritchard hi James. Yes I have and haven’t had the problem. I tend to use the spindle lock for the indexing system. Try that and see if that works for you

@@JohnClothier Thanks for the answer, the manual says not to use the index lock for chucks or faceplates and I mentioned this to Recordpower when I brought up the problem of winding on bowl blanks and they told me not to use the index lock because you will damage it. They don't, at the moment, accept there is a problem but I will pursue it with them. It's a pity because otherwise it's a nice lathe. At the moment I wind the blank onto the chuck in a vice . James .Pritchard yes they have said that. Personally I don’t agree with them. It’s what I do and I have never had an issue. I’ve had my chuck stuck on the lathe before and needed a mallet to get it off. I’ve used the index lock and it was fine.

Hi, whats the overall length? Im not sure how are they measuring it, but according to Record Power its 870mm which can not be right, coz you said the bed is 810 mm an then the motor and electronic control is clearly longer than 60mm. It would look like overall length is over 1000mm? Im I CLOSE?

The bed is 810mm. The motor sticks out 260mm when at the far end. I believe when they quote the 1000mm then are talking about the legs. The legs are at a flared angle so are about 1000mm apart. It needs a footprint of 1000mm but you will need a little more to the left for the motor to maximise on the bed. Hope that helps

Hi John, great video can you tel me though as I have 1" x 8Tpi chucks do Record power do this with that headstock or would I have to buy an adaptor and if so which one and how would I secure it for reverse turning Thanks one more thing when you shook the lathe it did move quite a bit which is my only worry as my Clarke would not move doing that.

Hi thanks. you would need to get an adapter. You will be best off speaking to record directly. They can make sure you get the right fitting. To be honest It is very sturdy As good if not better than any other lathe at that size. Remember that it is not bolted down just sat under its own weight. It is also designed to be portable so if you can lift it you can move it. I have turned 20" wood on it and I have also put a huge whole log on it. Both taking the size to its maximum and it was fine. The only time I have had it move is with a really out of balance piece of wood but you would get that with most lathes. I have seen a few Clarke lathes and none are as well made as the herald.

Thanks for the thorough review. Currently I have a DML 250 it's about time for an upgrade. I'd like to ask how much the motor sticks out to the back (in mm ;) when swiveled 45/90 degrees? I have very limited space but would love to turn inside a bowl without reaching over the bed and thus hitting the wall behind with longer gouges.

Hi John I'm hoping you can help me out I am trying to order a herold and cant view one with the covid problems in Ireland. I'm worried about the turning height as I suffer from back problems. I'm 5ft 10. Do you think I need to order the bench feet as well as the legs to bring it to elbow/spindle height. Thankyou so much 👍

What's the price of one of these...I have the Record Power DML 24X, it's a great machine but just a pain the bum having to undo and tighten things to move them with a spanner or an Allen key....

It retails for £999. Yandles ahve some on a discounted price of £899 at the moment and you get the leg stand thrown in for free

No probs. It does seem expensive but not when you put it in context with the equivalent lathes and features its a good price. The axminster equivalent is £900 and that doesn't have a rotating headstock.

John Clothier no suppose not if you look at that way...mines worth around £300-400 I think and can do everything you can on that one it's just i have to undo everything with a spanner or an Allen key..i want the quick realese handles...think I might have to do some converting here and there...

Thanks Mart. All I had to do was put the legs on. The rest was ready to go. As for alignment I found it spot on from day 1.

Hi John, Greetings from down under!! I want to ask if you have any further opinions of your new lathe 2 months in. Are there any things about it that bother you. I am in the market for my first lathe and this one looks like it might fit the bill. My only concern is the weight and the stand/legs... is it sturdy enough? cheers Gary.. PS keep up the good work!!

Hi Gary. Is there anything that concerns me or are there things I would change? There are certainly things that I would like to be improved upon but I am sure that people can say that about any lathe. This really comes down to personal preference vs available budget etc. If money was no object then this is not the lathe I would choose. The reason for this is by spending £5000 on a lather I would get the things that I would like to be changed. But this is not a £5000 lather it is a £1000 lathe. I have done hollowing, 20" outboard out of balance turning and all absolutely fine. As a first lathe it is absolutely ideal. It is reasonably priced and sets you up to do almost everything you would want to, not only as a beginner but as an intermediate too. So as to is there anything that concerns me? The stand is fine, the weight is fine, yes it is sturdy. The only thing that I think really should be there is a remote control to switch it on and off. Reaching around a 20" piece when outboard you do have to be a little careful and mindful of where things are. I have no hesitation in recommending this lathe to anyone that is just starting out, an intermediate or looking to move to the next level from a midi lathe etc. The reason I bought this lathe was because for the price point that I could afford it was the only one that gave me variable speed, cast iron bed, outboard turning, etc.

@@ozziemale202 I'm in Brisbane.....No I didnt, I found that they were extremely pricey once you included the full kit, Stand, extension bed, outboard jig etc. Plus I found the customer relations and spares accessibility very ordinary. I ended up getting something a lot bigger and more powerful... cheers Gary

Thanks for this video but i still have a question. Tool rest post size: 1" or 25mm? Because 1" = 25.4mm. There is a difference. I have accessories and I would like to know if they are compatible before buying this wood lathe.

Hi, I currently have a Nova Comet II mini lathe, it struggles with 10" bowl blanks when turning at about 800 rpm, do you find this lathe hard to stall ?, This was a great review, But may i ask, how the lathe comes, when i brought my Nova it came almost complete just the handle on the spindle needed to be fitted and tail stock wheel, i have looked at the record Cl4 and that comes in loads of bits!

If I take a really big cut I can slow it down but I have never stalled it. It has a lot of power. Mine was an ex demo so it came ready assembled. Sorry I can't help there.

Great walk through John. Just wondering if you had a max capacity bowl /platter would the tool rest reach across or would you move the tool rest to the left of the headstock?

Thank you for the review. What is the height of the turning centre from the ground when the lathe is mounted on the legs?

No the legs are not adjustable but you can build a bench to put it on and record power sell a set of bench feet for the lathe

Hi John, Just got one of these and not yet set up. It came with an EMC Filter that is not really mentioned in the manual. Should I use it? Do you know what its supposed to do? Thanks Mike

Hi Mike. It's a cracking lathe. I am sure you wont regret your purchase! The emf filter block is there because of regulations about interfering with things such as TVs. If your lathe is away from yours and your neighbour's homes I wouldn't bother. I dont use mine. I have wifi in my shed and it hasn't effected that or my radio.

Nice! The extension is really handy to slide the tail stock out of the way even if you aren't going to do long turnings

That spindle lock knob is awfully close to the head stock.Seems to easy to b distracted while turning & engage it, damaging your lathe!? yiiikkers...is there away to remove the round handle ?

I have never had an issue with it. You have to pull it out to move it so not something you would do by mistake

Can you get this lathe with a standard 1" x 8 thread h😅ead stock or does it only come in metric ? I have seen u tubes where there os an adapter on the nova c 3 chuck !?

The video was titled Record Power Coronet Herald, what did you think it was going to be about. it was a review of the lathe and a good one at that.Mike Waldt did a review of his new lathe recently. (The Stratos FU 230 Wood Lathe Review) That one cost twice as much as this one did and he didn't turn anything either. Do you think nobody should review and tools or equipment that YOU cant afford???

Thank you for commenting Jim. I am sorry that this is how you feel, it certainly was never the intention. This video was specifically aimed at providing information on the lathe and was released outside of my usual project schedule and with an unboxing icon in the thumbnail to try and help people who may not have been interested to know this video was not for them. When I had mentioned the new lathe to people within the community many people asked if I would do this video as they were keen to find out more about it prior to making a purchase themselves. I will be back to turning this weekend and producing more turning project videos. I do have some resin projects cued up that hopefully will be of interest. Once again I am sorry that you felt that I was just showing off a new toy, it really was meant as unbiased information for others that may be considering the purchase. Thank you for supporting my channel
