Unboxing the Coronet Herald Lathe and having a go 

Thank you Dave, really appreciate that. I had to annoy the wife enough for her to relent and allow the new purchase... she kept rolling her eyes everytime I mentioned the word lathe 😂 The old lathe was fun and served its time well, but can already see the difference the Herald makes.

Enjoy it when you get yours! Worm eaten wood could make for a very characteristic piece. Bet you have some really nice pieces of wood seasoned that will make for some excellent turnings. Awesome, glad you're enjoying yours. I am still really impressed with the lathe overall and enjoying it. Definitely was the best decision to upgrade to it. Yeah, that power lead did confuse me initially as well and I did think if there was an option with it, but as you say, short of rewiring it, I just decided to leave it as is for now. I just make sure that there are no other forces pulling on it. Without the benchfeet mine would have been lower than I'd have needed it, but they also give the opportunity for me to place items underneath the lathe while I'm working. Enjoy your lathe and happy turnings!

@@JiggsysShed The space underneath is a good point, it would make removing the chips underneath much easier. I suspect my bench is a bit higher than yours and the connecting plates would have made the spindle too high. Plus the additional cost😉 I still think that the cable length is wrong, but RP won’t admit it, if they do I will probably cost them.

@Jestey6 it does make it easier, though I still need to use the vacuum under the feet as it does not brush out easily. They are definitely not necessary if you don't need the extra height.

Thank you Mehmet, really appreciate you watching. Yeah, I was definitely in need of an upgrade and this lathe should keep me going for a long time. The weight of it will make it a lot more stable as well. There is so many other lathes that can be upgraded too later, but space will become an issue.

@@JiggsysShed I saw you making small bowl - do you feel the difference with the new more advanced machine?

Yes, it does make a big difference even on the small pieces. I can make more substantial cuts and it significantly reduces the time it takes me to turn a bowl.

Thank you so much Frank. It definitely is a lot of fun and already feels so much easier to use compared to my old lathe. I think that the only thing with mounting it to a workbench is that there is more vibration with unbalanced pieces as there is less absorption of the vibrations, but it definitely does help from a space perspective and I can put tools and stuff underneath the lathe as I'm working so that they are close to hand. Yeah the coronet series has definitely stepped up the game and the power for a small motor is great as they have managed to step up it's power output, so it does rival bigger machines well. The swivelling headstock and variable speed is definitely a big plus for me. Yeah, not sure of the exact name, but I know what you mean. Think I just call it a tailstock alignment tool. I haven't yet felt the need to get one, but I know it's available from Axminster Tools in the UK.

Thank you. I'm still very much learning and my cuts are not always quite there, but was definitely pleased with how this came and the herald definitely made the job a lot easier than my old lathe. The Herald is definitely a great lathe, though would have been good if it came with a slightly larger tool rest... Will have to pick one up some point

@@JiggsysShed Get a Robust brand tool rest, they come with a round hardened rod welded on the top, very smooth and long lasting. BTW i just finished setting up mine, love it, it's like an old sawing machine, retro, quiet and yet advanced. mine came with the new upgraded tail-stock, self ejecting and the bolt doesn't come through the hand wheel anymore.

@@JiggsysShed i know how you feel about the old one as my first lathe was similar just branded differently. Because the bed is just square tubing for one, it makes a hell of a noice when turning and they arent really structural strong. On my old lathe i couldnt use a chuck as the whole spindle and threads were smaller and having an adapter made would have costed me a grand.

@@PotgieterWoodturning yeah, mine would flex when I put something between spindles and I could never take something off and have it perfectly centre when I flip it round. Wow, that's a lot for an adaptor. My chuck set came with an adaptor to fit the spindle thread of the old lathe which was handy. The new lathe definitely runs a lot quieter and the weight just gives it so much more stability.

@@JiggsysShed yes, like you say, turning stuff around you always had to true it up again. Yes, it flexes a lot. Glad you are enjoying the new lathe mate 😁👍🏼

Although fixable, it was always in my head that I would think about upgrading when the old lathe needed repair as I needed something with more torque. Will fix up the motor some point though and make use of it somehow.

Yeah, I continue to be impressed by the power of the Coronet Herald. It is a lovely lathe for a small space. The blue one was a Charnwood W811, no longer in production, but its similar to ones you can find on Amazon. It did serve me well, but I was always working it harder than it was designed for.

@@JiggsysShed I just got my first one. Just a small craftsman half hp wish it had a little more.. but once I get it down better I'm going for one of the larger midi like that record power. Such an amazing machine. With the rotating stock and stuff. I should have just went there to begin with because I feel in love with turning day one

Yeah, it's quite an addictive hobby. The blue lathe had set me up for falling in love with the hobby and where I was limited by it in some things that I could do, it did challenge me to think about how I could still make things work for me. Changing to the herald definitely made me appreciate the challenges that I had with the old one, but it was all good fun. The craftsman should serve you well in your woodturning journey. If u have time to answer one question I would much appreciate it. I got half scammed on HSS chisels and they sent me HCS ones that are ungodly trashy. I have somebother ones coming but they could take three weeks for the order to be filled and I don't want to wait until then obviously to turn again and i dontbhave my own bench grinder yet. Do u know if anyone has any luck sharpening with a Dremel and the mini grit wheels on it

Thank you for watching. I am loving this lathe as it has significantly stepped up what I was able to achieve on a lathe. I had a friend who had one so he could advise about it. Also, other makers in the community recommended it to me. The lathe fits well into a small workshop and despite being a smaller lathe, the way it is engineered allows ir to compete with bigger and more expensive lathes. The other reasons for purchasing it were the variable speed and the swivelling head stock (not necessarily found on other lathes at a similar price). Both of these functions allows for a lot more ease in turning. Although I've not done it yet myself, I would definitely recommend hitting a bigger tool rest or a curved one to reach into deeper bowls better. I hope this helps, but if there is anything else you want to know, just let me know

@t.e.1189 the accessories I have purchased as extras were a bigger chuck than what I had. I went for the 100mm from Rutland Tools as it came as a set with a number of adaptations. There is a video up in regards to unboxing that. Though my other choice would be the Record Power or Axminster chucks. I also purchased a Jacobs chuck insert which allows me to drill a center hole and has made hollowing simpler at times. Gouges wise, I can only really recommend what I have used. There are a variety of good brands out there, but I do like the Robert Sorby tools in regards to traditional gouges. Simon Hope does a really nice carbide pro hollower. If you are looking to use carbide tools, I would recommend Easy Wood Tools, they are not cheap, but you do not need many of them to achieve good turnings. I have had a go with them before and they do cut the wood really well. @JPwoodwork uses these all the time and would be able to advise you more on these if interested. If using traditional gouges, make sure you have a good sharpening system. I use the Robert Sorby ProEdge as it makes sharpening a lot quicker and easier for me, but there are other options available. Traditional gouge wise, you do not need to start with many from the offset as you can often achieve a fair amount with even just the beginner sets on offer (Robert Sorby does a set). Currently with the swiveling head stock I can only turn it to a 45 degree angle as having other at 90degrees I will need the outrigger. If you are able, I would definitely recommend having the legs with the lathe to have it free standing. Having it mounted on the bench does mean I have to run out of balance pieces at a very low speed as it will otherwise shake the whole workshop.

Thank you Roy. Yeah definitely needed it. If you can go for the herald, it is a great machine and the swiveling headstock is handy. You also have the reverse function. The only time you would need to have the full clearance behind is if you are going to do a big piece with the headstock swung to 90 degrees, for which you need 47cm from wall to front of bench feet. For a 45degree swing, you would need 45cm. For a 22.5 degree swing, which helps with the hollowing, you need 41cm. It's 88cm of workbench required for the feet, then allow 25cm for the motor and 10cm for the tool rest, longer if you intend to add the extension. These are only the bare minimum and I would definitely recommend you work bench being longer than 88cm to allow enough spacing for the bolts. The adaptor does put it further from the headstock and for small piece this is fine, but for bigger you want a chuck that fits directly onto the lathe thread. Rutland chucks can be purchased at the correct thread size and it is always great to have a spare. The adaptor was fairly reasonable in cost as well from Rutlands. The chuck that I have is the 3" Xact prescion, which is now the Precision 75, so slightly smaller than yours. Hope that answers your questions.

Unfortunately I am not sure about the answer to that. I think it has just enough power for it, but the machine might need to work too hard for it to be a viable option. It might be worth contacting Record Power direct to enquire about it.

That would be good to know, thank you. I've only gone to belt 1 setting a few times when doing very out of balance pieces. Normally I'm on 2 for bowls and 3 for spindles.

Tried it out on some wet lime wood last night. It worked and I got three bowls out of a 14 inch blank. Belt 1 required and it bogged down a good few times but it did it much easier than I thought. I was really impressed with it. Great lathe. Outboard turned 16 x 5 inch diameter green blank.

@kellogs101101 that's a good! Great to be able to make the most out of a piece of wood. That is a good size outboard given that it would be heavier as well given the moisture content. Great going. I need to get myself the extended banjo so I can turn outboard. Currently only able to go up to 45degrees.
