I unbox a Record Power SC4 woodturning chuck and evaluate it. I do a direct comparison to a Teknatool SuperNova2 woodturning chuck since both are quite similar and have interchangeable jaws. I review the different chucks and provides information on the interchangeability of the jaws for people considering second (or more) chucks.

Thanks Mike great review. Clear and informative. I bought a SC4 some months ago and have found it as good as the Super Nova 2 that I have had for years. They are both great chucks Being able to interchange jaws with my Nova greatly increases flexibility and set-up in my workshop. To nip up and also remove the chuck from the lathe spindle is easily accomplished by use of the large end of the spanner provided engaged in the sockets used to expand or close the jaws. However to perform chuck removal using the small end of the spanner in the threaded insert hole does give rise to spanner slippage issues I have found. I only ever just NIP the chuck up. No hero moves required. And have never had a chuck come loose in operation. I also enjoy the grip provided by the standard jaw and the fact that NO DOVETAIL IS REQUIRED for fit. Thanks for drawing attention to that feature. I have on many occasions pointed that out fact to fellow woodturners who have had issue with their work holding. Thanks again

+Jim Robb Some of chucking is what you get used to but I do like the hawk beak of the standard teknatool, Patriot and SC4, SC3 jaws. I have seen many workshop facilitators illustrate the problesm with the Talon serrated jaws squeezing the work away from the chuck jaws.

Suggestion for a future video : Please explain how to best use the indexing plate on the back of the chuck. Thanks
@MikePeaceWoodturning

Umm. I have never used the indexing holes on my chuck. I will have to consider making a jig for that. But I think maybe a plastic indexing wheel that goes between the chuck and the spindle would be easier to use.

Hi Mike. I have only ever bought and use Teknatool chucks in my workshop but have had on occasion use record and some very bad cheaper Chinese chucks.When record first stated selling chucks they sold re branded Teknatool chucks and I find the the new type they are selling are a knock out of the Teknatool design.The thing I find with Teknatool chucks is that the jaws made in the early seventies fit the most up to date chucks they make .I have a midi chuck made way back when (1970s) which takes all the modem jaws and if I had the inclination I could set it up with the new clip on style. This midi chuck is still working very well after 40yrs of hard labor. It was from the first production of the four jaw chucks ,at that time they were not putting there brand on them( Nova ) that show how close it is to being one of the first four jaw chucks made by Teknatool ,it is now my dedicated Cole jaw chuck. I have found that most chucks I have used are in some way a copy of the Teknatool product as Teknatool invented the four jaw chuck way back when. The only thing that I don't like about the Teknatool product is that it is now made in china instead of New Zealand or the USA. Great un boxing Mike I very much enjoy your videos you have a lot of knowledge and thank you for shearing it I get a lot out of it and you have taught me a lot. Sorry for being so long winded hahaha :o)

The review is certainly appreciated. I've been kicking around the idea of getting one of these myself. Really like the Teknatool chucks and jaws and have the midi and Supernova 2 chucks that I really like, but the largest majority of turners in my club firmly believe in the Vicmarc chucks. They are great but I have a hard time spending that kind of money.

Hi Mike, Great review! I've been subscribed for a while now and have enjoyed all of your videos. They're clear, concise, and very informative. You're one of my favorites on RU-vid. The Record Power chuck looks very interesting to me. I have a Nova G3 and don't really like it at all. There is a TON of play in the jaw slides. At a minimum, on each slide when the jaws are attached there is no less than 1/16" of wobble. This has been an issue when turning a small finial, pen blank, or what ever. I cannot rely on the piece being truly centered. My OneWay Talon has virtually no play at all in the slides, so I end up using it more often even though I like the Nova jaws better. WoodCraft has the Record Power S3 for $150 which is not a bad price at all. I may just give it a try. Thanks for posting this! I never would have known if the chuck existed or not until I saw this.

+Bob Ostrowski Happy this review was useful for you. I have slop in the Teknatool jaw slides but have never noticed any run out on the work after they are tightened. If your G3 is not direct threaded, you might take out the insert and make sure there is no bit of metal shavings stuck in the bottom. The put in the insert again. Lots of folks have not tightened up the threaded insert since it is so snug and sometimes takes some force to be sure it is seated. If you can measure the run out, I would contact Teknatool in Florida for some relief. They should make it right for you.

There are two different 1 1/4x8 inserts. Be aware that only the 2132 Thread Adaptor 1-1/4” x 8 TPI UNS-RHhas a threaded hole and insert screw to secure the chuck when in reverse. The other one, 2162, does not and I understand that model is being discontinued.

Yes. The Sorby,, Teknatool and Record Power have identical jaw fixing. Good to hear about Teknatool service. I have 5 Teknatool chucks but the to me the SC4 is clearly better machined then the equivalent SN2. But costs more. And I have had no problems with my Teknatool chucks.

Mike... Please look on your new Record chuck insert and see if it has a set screw to fasten the insert & chuck to the lathe headstock to prevent it unscrewing during reverse turning... I'm sure you've used your lathe in reverse to facilitate a different sanding presence, and the set screw on the insert prevents the chuck from 'unscrewing' itself in the reverse direction and causing a nasty accident. I'm curious as my other Nova chuck inserts have a set screw to prevent this and would not purchase a record chuck/insert if it didn't have a set screw to prevent this issue. Thanks again for all you do and safe turning to you!

Mike ... Thanks for the review. I have two Nova G3's and a Nova Infinity. I adapted the G3's to use the Infinity quick-change jaws ... nice but a bit pricey. I have been considering the need for a bigger chuck (e.g. the Nova Titan or SN2) ... maybe the Record would be a good fit.
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 8 лет назад
+Gerald Jensen The SC4, Patriot or SN2 are definitely beefier than the G3. I think the Titan is probably overkill unless you are turning massive stuff, 100 # blanks or so. It does use the same hex wrench as the SC4 et al which I do like much better then my G3 wrench which I don't care for.
@GeraldJensen
@GeraldJensen 8 лет назад
+Mike Peace My Nova Infinity came with #3 bowl jaws, which are okay for bowls up to 10" or 12" ... not sure I would go much bigger than that with those jaws. When I got the Infinity, my intention was to have three chucks with completely interchangeable jaw sets (the G3's for smaller pieces, the Infinity for bigger work). I have a log that is 20"+ in diameter and 20"+ long that I want to turn into a big hollow form, but though Teknatool's literature says they have bigger jaw sets for the Infinity, I can't find a source for them.
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 8 лет назад
+Gerald Jensen I have the Powergrip jaws but not the Infinity chuck. Teknatool says they are the most powerful jaws they make. You might try contacting Teknatool Customer Service in Florida and see if they have any recommendations or let you know who carries the jaws you are looking for.

Thank you for the review. I would like to purchase the SC4 but I have a question about the inserts. I have an old PM90 lathe that is 1 1/2” x 8 (38mm x 8). I have a Nova G3 that threads straight on without any insert. My question is if the record power uses the same exterior thread as the Nova on inserts? I contacted Record Power and asked them what the threads on their inserts were but I cannot seem to ask the right questions for them to tell me the pitch on the exterior of the inserts. Any help would be most appreciated.
@MikePeaceWoodturning

I did some measuring of a RP adapter and it is larger than the Teknatool so they do use different interior chuck threads for their adapters. but Craft Supplies USA sells a spindle adapter to convert from a 1 1/2x8 to a 1 1/4x8.

+Mike Peace It must be a very recent change. When I looked at purchasing one earlier this year it was being sold as a Record Nova and the literature was from Teknatool. Who makes them now?
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 8 лет назад
+Rick McQuay Record Power has them made in China to their specs and with Record Power folks on site is what the Record Power folks tell me. Not sure that is any different from the Sorby Patriot which is made in China. The Patriot, SC4 and SN2 are all clearly different chucks with different specs.

Yes the SC4 comes with a grub screw to tighten on the spindle for reversing. As I mentioned, I never use it. I don't grab the spindle knob to slow the turning down when turning off. I have seen a chuck coming off when doing that. Slow reverse turning when sanding should not be a problem.

@@MikePeaceWoodturning Thanks for taking the time to answer. Just one thing, when you say you don't use it, do you mean you don't use the chuck or the locking screws on the sc4, which, if the latter, you are happy to reverse without locking screws? Thanks again James

What do you do about the fact that you cannot reverse directions of the spindle for sanding? I just bought one of these on your suggestion and now, after reading in the manual that there is no way of securing the chuck adapter, 1 1/4 in x 8 TPI, to the spindle, I cannot reverse directions for sanding. I just bought a PM2014 lathe. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

@MikePeaceWoodturning 3 года назад
Ok, I checked my inserts. The one that does not have a drilled set screw hole is the 2162 so I think that is the one you bought. The other one I use on my PM3520 is the 2132 which has a set screw. I never noticed the difference so thanks for bringing to my attention. I typically do not lock my chucks down on spindle using the set screw and I rarely turn in reverse.
@grumpywiseguy5992
@grumpywiseguy5992 3 года назад
@@MikePeaceWoodturning The 2132 doesn't make it to the flat surface of the spindle, so I went up to Ace Hardware and bought a phenolic 1 1/4 inch washer for 2 bucks and now I have a solid surface interface that I can tighten very securely. The only reason for me to reverse the lathe direction is to sand at around 500 RPM.. This has practically no stress or torque on the lathe spindle. So I am going to remain happy with this solution and use the SC4 chuck anyway. It is very well made and I have already bought a set of Nova pen jaws for it. In the near future I will probably purchase an Easywood chuck with the quick release jaws. Screwing and unscrewing 8 hex nuts every time I want to change jaws will get old quickly. I already have more money in tools and accessories than the lathe cost to begin with!!!! I also bought the PowerMatic Light that attaches directly to the 2 accessory screw holes in the headstock. I paid a ridiculous amount of money for it, but it is worth every cent. The light is bright and about 10 inches long on three articulating joints and arms. Solid connection to the lathe and adjustable to look into the interior of hollow forms. A must have for the PM2014 IMHO. Cheers and Stay Safe.

@@MikePeaceWoodturning I bought a Nova Supernova 2 chuck with a set screw in the adapter. Just thought I would let you know that I agree with your assessment of the RP SC4. It is a better manufactured chuck and jaws. It is the little things here and there but the SC4 is definitely a better chuck, albeit a little more money. Once you buy the first one, the rest can be bought as just the chuck without all the accessories for quite a bit cheaper. I also purchased a Hurricane spindle roughing gouge and am having success with it. And NO I am not trying to rough out bowls with it. In the end, I will probably use both traditional and carbide tools where they work the best in particular circumstances. I have no pre built in biases based on years and years of experience. I would highly recommend trying out the Easywood negative rake cutters. I can put a fine sand ready finish on with very little effort, quickly with these things. It is amazing and I don't know how they do that but it works. Cheers and Stay Safe.
