Pete thank you so much for this video. It is so encouraging to me to see your relaxed attitude toward singing and recording. And showing that making mistakes is just a part of the process! I liked your song very much and learned a lot from watching this video!!!

Hey Tim - great to hear from you as always, and thanks for your kind words. Be thankful I didn't expose you to the whole two hours of recording. Didn't think people needed to see THAT many mistakes. :)

Excellent. You’re obviously your own man with a style that is well honed. Your voice though instantly reminded me of a singer that I also greatly admired. The late, great Ewen Carruthers. You’ve prompted me to go back to GarageBand. Tried in the past and not been too successful and gone towards Audacity.

Hey Stuart. Thanks so much my friend! I’m not familiar with Ewen Carruthers so will have to look him up. Glad I’ve helped you give GarageBand another go. It is one of those things that’s easy to start with but does have a surprisingly steep learning curve.

Pete Johns, you are very helpful and you’ve helped me out a lot, even though I make a completely different genre of music. I make hip hop. I wanted to tell you that you have a great voice but it sounds too clean and almost too loud over the track. It doesn’t sound like it fits. And maybe that’s just me. I just thought a few vocal effects every once in awhile and to turn a couple tracks down a little I feel like it would sound like a professional song recorded in a studio. Much love ✌🏻

Thanks so much for your kind words and feedback my friend. Mixing my vocals too loud is 100% my biggest current challenge and I've been working hard on this in recent songs. Not quite there, but making improvements! Thanks again.

Nice one Steve! So it really depends on your budget and what you’re looking to record. I’m a big fan of both the iRig Pro I/O I’d you want something simple or the Steinberg UR22C if you want the best quality but are okay with getting the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter and a powered hub. How do you keep the ambient noise levels down without a sound booth? My microphone picks up the noise from the cars passing on the street!
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 6 лет назад
Yes, I have this problem too, and am on a bus route which can be even worse. I actually record a lot of the quieter sounds very early in the morning, though is. Rings in other problems like sleeping family members. I also often use my walk in robe to get the deadened sound, or even the car can make a surprisingly good makeshift vocal booth sometimes. Finally for vocals, and this sounds (and is) weird - you can put a blanket over your head or surround yourself with soft absorbent objects in some other way.

Thanks Josh. Really appreciate your support. I was totally listening to a bunch of Blink and Millencolin when I wrote this. I realised after the fact that it is very much inspired by “The Party Song” from Blink 182’s Enema of the State, one of my fave tracks and also a reflection on college culture. Hopefully I pulled off an “homage” as opposed to a “rip off”. 🤟

Pete Johns Nah, definitely not a rip off, and thankfully I could understand every word of your song whereas "The Party Song" is like "Bffnskalxncbcjgmrrnsnfnf the party!!" Haha! Blink is my favorite band (alongside Nirvana) and I love Millencolin as well, discovered them through the Tony Hawk game soundtracks as a kid. You wear your influences on your sleeve and it is very much appreciated by guys like me who worship blink. Please keep up the excellent videos and keep releasing catchy music!! You rock, Pete!!

Hi, mate. I’ve got a behringer condenser usb mic. Do you think I can get a good vocal sound with it connecting it straight into the iPad? Thanks a lot
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 6 лет назад
Hey Dan. Thanks for watching and for your question mate. I have a Behringer USB mic and it’s okay for vocals but not great. It’s probably worth buying a cheap lightning to USB adapter and giving it a go. Or you can pick up the genuine adapter and then you’ll have a good connection if you want to upgrade to an audio interface and XLR mic in the future.

Hi pete, appreciate your videos, just want to ask what audio splitter are you using for your mic and headphones for your ipad? And what is better? Headphones with built in mic or without? More power!!!!
@PeteJohnsMusic
@PeteJohnsMusic 6 лет назад
Hey Jayson. Thanks for taking the time to comment my friend! So, when recording on my iPad, I use the Steinberg UR12 audio interface which handle all the audio for me. It was a microphone preamp that I can plug any microphone in to, and instrument jack for guitars and keyboards, a headphone jack to monitor the sound, and two RCA outputs that I can send to other speakers (or in this case, to my PC to record the sound so you can hear what I record on the video). I do have a Jabra headset that just uses a 3.5mm jack and has headphones and mic that I use to record the audio for some of my videos and some spoken word, but for music this is my go to setup. Here's a video about the interface and how it works. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4l-v0iuJt7o.html

Hey Jayson. The Behringer is pretty good too, but is more of a mixer and doesn't support the same power set up and features the Steinberg does. I use an iPad Air 2 as well and it definitely supports the Lightning to USB adapter. I suggest taking a look at my latest video where I go through and show all the effects on my latest song. Hey there. Depending on the interface you are using, it is definitely possible. I have a two track interface (Steinberg UR12) which records a microphone and guitar at the same time, and also have just purchased a Steinberg UR44 which has 6 inputs, so I can record up to 4 microphones/instruments as well as a separate stereo track at the same time. @PeteJohnsMusic 6 лет назад
Buzz Smith - Hey there! Thanks for watching and for your comment. You’re right, I wasn’t very explicit about where the headphones are plugged in. The Steinberg UR12 Audio interface has its own headphone output for monitoring so I was plugged in there, as when you connect a USB interface like this it disables the iPad’s headphone output and replaces with the audio interface.

Interface and cable...Ordered! One more question...how much RAM is within your iPad and what do you use for either backup or to transfer projects from the iPad? I'm quite comfortable with my MacPro based DAW studio but I'm trying to help a friend get into the GarageBand/iPad setup for his vocal only home studio. He has great gear, but his hardware recording device is very cumbersome and outdated. Thanks again and best of luck with all of your projects!

Left eye is fine. It’s the right one that struggles to see through the prosthetic in front of it. Mirrors can be confusing.

I always keep a lyric sheet handy, other wise I'll sing the wrong verse. LOL

Haha! Yes, I do these days - or better yet I make sure I know my lyrics going in so I can just belt them out. 🙏

Pete Johns sometimes I tend to make more errors as soon as the record button is pressed lol.

It’s a psychological thing I think.
