Record Separate Channels On Any Audio Mixer - Get 2 Separate Tracks

Can you record two separate audio channels on any mixer? Yes, you can get 2 separated tracks by adjusting the panning. I show you how here using my Behringer Xenyx Q802USB Audio Mixer and 2 microphones.
🔥 HERE IS THE GEAR I USED
✅ Behringer Xenyx USB Mixer: geni.us/Q1002USB
✅ Shure SM7B Vocal Mic: geni.us/SM7B-Mic
✅ Shure MV7 USB/XLR Podcasting Mic: geni.us/ShureMV7

🔥 VIDEO CHAPTERS
0:00 Intro
2:44 Mic and Audio Mixer Set Up
3:20 Reaper DAW Set Up - record 2 separate mono tracks from mixer
5:26 Audacity Set Up - record 2 separate sources from mixer in stereo
6:55 Audacity - split stereo track into 2 mono tracks
Most mixers don't record true multitrack audio, that is, they don't send each of the individual inputs out to software (typically via USB) so that you can record each audio channel onto its own track. However they do output stereo, or left and right audio.
S0, if you hard pan one channel left and another channel all the way to the right, you can record a stereo file that will contain microphone one only on the left side and microphone two only on the right. Or you can set up your DAW to record two separate mono tracks - one from the left and one from the right.
This allows you to give each track its own customized FX within the DAW, as well as remove unwanted audio that would otherwise be blended together with the other channel.
Great if you want to record two separate sources, such as a guitar and a mic at the same time - but on separate tracks.
It’s also excellent for podcasters who have two hosts and want to record audio of each on their own track for further processing in the edit.

This is awesome. I have a youtube channel and I have used the Behringer XR18 to record up to 4 seperate audio microphone signals at the same time in LOGIC. It allows for more than the 2 stereo channels to be sent via the USB Bus to the DAW so that all 18 channels can be recorded at one time. You have to select that option when you create the channels for recording though otherwise you would only get the one channel recorded. Thanks for creating such great content. Take care and have a great day.

Ok, 1st off, you are just FABULOUS! Now let's get busy... I'm not at the point of this video yet, but I'm sure I'll love it when I get there. I need someone to do a vid from the beginners perspective of the vocabulary! I'm probably older than you and in my younger yrs would just be overwhelmed by the different knobs, colors, graphs and all of the DAW's, in fact, I have an adult son who is very much musically gifted, but seems he got it from all my siblings who claimed I was tone death!??? Any who, I'm very intrigued by it now, and spend my days getting over depression by setting up my own studio and learning from people like yourself. I love how you explain things and my first vid was THE WAY TO SETUP 2 USB MICS ON A COMPUTER. I'm very tech literate, therefore consult with friends who contact me about how to do things with tech. I was trying to help one with that when I saw your 1st vid! The way you showed how to download the software and set it up along with connecting the hardware, and showing everything so well along the way was perfect. I have been spending my days trying to learn all I can about the audio interfaces and bought the 4i4 when I saw your vid on how to use a usb or xlr mic. I felt the solo would not offer me enough learning curve, and the 2i2 would make me angry that I hadn't gone bigger once I learned, but I returned the 4i4 and managed to get a Presonus Firebox yesterday at 35.00, so now I have something I can have fun learning with that won't just cost too much and it has firewire ports, so I have some work to do to figure all that out also. (MAYBE DO A VID ON USING THE OLDER INTERFACES.) I really liked the vid with the music teacher who surprised you by using a GoPro 8 cam. I'm trying to get my hands on a 7black, but they are being priced gauged, so thinking of using an older camcorder instead... still too pricey now, many choices, and avenues to take to finding on priced right! Ok, so back to the subject of this comment... could you do a vid to help me to know better what terms like LINE IN, BALANCED, WHY THEY CALL SPEAKERS MONITORS NOW, WHAT IS DIRECT MONITORING ALL ABOUT? ALL THE INS AND OUTS OF HOW THE DATA IS TRAVELING FROM AND TO THE INTERFACES, MONITORS, HEADSETS ETC. WHATS GOING TO THE COMPUTER, AND WHY, OR WHAT GOES THRU THE INTERFACE AND WHY IT HAS TO OR NOT. It took me 2 wks to realize how to use the 48v power... the way it channels and works is still fuzzy. HERE'S A BIG ONE, WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN MONITORS/HEADSETS, BUT MAINLY HOOKING THEM UP AND... LOTS i STILL NEED TO KNOW, AND YOU DESCRIBE BEST FOR ME RIGHT NOW! THANK YOU FOR LISTENING...

Very very helpful video, that was exactly my concern. Please also address my another problem as I have a two mic input usb mixer but I want to record 4 persons' podcast through it. One idea that came into my mind is to use 2 dynamic mics into one input through a split box or cable and then connect that one with one mic activator. I don't have stuff with me right now so can you please make a video of it? Like is it even possible that one fethead or dynamite powers two dynamic mics at the same time? Will it be harmful for my audio mixer if I do this?

Thank you for this. I'm having so much trouble finding this information for 2 xlr mics into an interface and then into Garageband. Will this tactic work for that? I'm using a MIxPre6 as my interface. One xlr into channel 1 and the other into channel 2. But when I put them into Garageband, my mic is showing up on both tracks. I guess panning is the key? If you could explain, I would love you for it. Thanks again.

Just a question, on a non usb mixer, with the left and right channels going into an interface, would you be able to get a 3rd channel by using the FX send going to the 3rd channel on your interface with the FX knob turned up, and with the volume level turned all the way down?

I have a reverse situation on which I'd like some advice. I use L/R panning of channels on my DAW to send specific instruments to a PA (drums 1 side and any other instrument on the other). This enables my band, which doesn't yet have a drummer, to rehearse prepared arrangements when musicians are not available and works well. I'm wondering if it's possible to feed individual channels separately from the DAW to a digital mixer for better control when mixing live. So the ideal is to have each band instrument (no problem) and each recorded instrument (the challenge) as separate PA channels that can be mixed accordingly. Can this be done by a multichannel audio interface or is there a constraint in the signal chain? If not possible, is there a more effective solution? We can't find a good enough drummer who isn't already booked up so I envisage using some form of substitution for the foreseeable future.

i have a question if anyone can answer, I would be very grateful. I am using 4 channels of a mixer that has 6 total channels and i need to connect these 4 channels that i am using now to a daw in 4 different channels. An audio interface like focusrite 2i2 or motu m2 can help me with that? or do i need an audio interface with a number of channels equal to the number of channels that i am using from the mixer ? I see most examples from youtube presents 2 channels with these audio interfaces, but what if i have more channels on a mixer, what kind of audio interface does it require ? I don't use mic for example, i am using 3 synths and a drum machine.

Yes, you create a new track(s) and point the mixer channels to them. Make sure the new tracks are enabled for recording and the originally recorded ones are not anymore. You should hear the original tracks S playback while recording to the new tracks.
@truthwinseverytime8805

You could keep adding 2 tracks at a time for as many tracks as your DAW will allow for.
