Last year, Utah's Great Salt Lake reached its lowest level ever recorded, but massive snow amounts this summer have brought it back from the brink. Now, there are new signs of life at the lake. John Blackstone has more.

"We will be in drought within the next five years." Probably next year. This was an El Nino year, which typically brings increased precipitation to the west.

Everyone who has commented so far clearly watched the piece and understood it. How is it that the hosts of the show didn't seem to get it? Jeff Glor even misquoted Bonnie Baxter saying that she said, according to his distortion, "I wrote the obituary for this lake. Now I'm saying it's back." She absolutely did NOT say that. The lake has recovered 5 feet of a needed 11 feet of depth, and the likelihood of that continuing in the next few years is extremely low. What ever happened to intellectual honesty in journalism? After a well done report, this host just blatantly tries to undermine the point being made. This is good news for the moment, but the overall situation remains grim. Shame on you CBS. You are a complete disappointment to honest journalism.

THAT'S RIGHT! GOD opened His Heavens by HIS merciful hand, because of His goodness, kindness, and faithfulness! So-called Mother Nature is just a fairytale. People who use that term simply don't want to give God any Glory, even when He is doing wonderful things for our benefit alone. Thank You, Heavenly Father!

Born and raised in SLC. This year bought us a couple years. That's it. We have had over 20 years of data showing this was happening but they did nothing. It's pathetic. We had a governor that told the citizens to "pray for rain" Instead of creating changes

I thought we were having catastrophic global warming? How does that jibe with record snowfall? This is another in the incredibly long line of natural occurrences that don't match what the "experts" all say is happening. I'm going to go with the fact that the earth's climate has always, and will always, change. Sometimes radically. We don't currently have the ability to accurately forecast local weather much less what is going to happen in years or decades.

We live in a time of weather misinformation. Last week there were news reports that this was the hottest summer in 120,000 years and some said the hottest summer ever. All the weather websites list different forecasted highs and lows and precipitation and humidity. The weather maps on nightly news are more likely to show heat indexes than actual temperatures. If someone installs a temperature probe above an air conditioner or black asphalt parking lot, it will read higher in the summer. In a couple decades are we going to say, “the 2020’s was a hot decade,” or, “that was the beginning of the end?” I have a feeling that a mild several years is all that it will take and climate scientists will be patting themselves on the back for saving the Earth from assured destruction and mass extinction by ramming a green initiative down all our throats as China and India could care less about targets set by rich people about rich people problems.

@@jcldctt Excuse for what? I am talking about huge discrepancies in the reporting of something so basic as local air temperatures casting doubt on the accuracy of global climate models to predict events years into the future. What’s the point of having a perfect climate model, which there is none, if bad data is plugged in it. We care about the global climate because of local weather implications first and foremost. They are intertwined. By all means please enlighten me on the subject since you have declared me ignorant.

“Record snow pack brings great salt lake back from drought for now” would have been more accurate. Without changes to how water is used it will be back to where it just was in a few years. Can’t expect ma nature to bail us out every time.
